Epidemiological studies on Salmonella and Campylobacter jejuni.

An overview is given of investigations concerning the epidemiology of Salmonella, carried out at the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Hygiene in Bilthoven, The Netherlands, during the last thirty years. It is made clear that Salmonella, because of its ubiquitous occurrence and its large variety in sero- and phage-types, is the organism of choice to study the epidemiological pathways of pathogens between man, animals and the environment. It is demonstrated that these are in fact the pathways of faecal contamination, and therefore have validity for a larger number of bacteri

The barren camel with endometritis--isolation of Trichomonas fetus and different bacteria.

This study constitutes the first reported isolation of Trichomonas fetus from the uterus of breeding camels. Twenty-four of 68 camels, which were barren for 1-4 years were found to be positive for T. fetus. One preputial washing of a camel bull which had served the herd was found to be positive for T. fetus. The uterine flora of all camels were examined. Ten different bacterial and 2 fungal species were isolated. All samples were negative for Campylobacter sp., Taylorella equigenitalis and Streptococcus zooepidemicus.

Incidence of Campylobacter enteritis in the midwestern United States.

The incidence of Campylobacter enteritis was assessed in an 800-bed medical center in the midwestern United States. Stool specimens from 203 patients were cultured on a modified Skirrow's selective media and incubated for 48 hours at 42 C in a microaerophilic atmosphere. Campylobacter fetus ssp. jejuni was isolated from 10 patients for an incidence rate of 4.9 percent. All patients were symptomatic. The results suggest that clinical laboratories must establish methods to culture and identify this organism on a routine basis.

Correlation between human and animal bio-serogroups of Campylobacter isolates in Nigeria.

Campylobacter enteritis is endemic in Nigeria as in most other developing countries of the world. This paper examines the common biotypes and serogroups of Campylobacter in human and animal isolates. The observed correlation suggests a possible animal to human route of infection in Nigeria. Implications on preventive and control measures are discussed.

Campylobacter magnus sp. nov., isolated from caecal contents of domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus).

During the 2021 European Food Safety Authority coordinated harmonized monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter species in Slovenia, five Campylobacter-like strains were cultured from caeca of a total of 104 domestic pigs that could not be identified using the standard-prescribed biochemical tests or MALDI-TOF MS. The isolates were obtained using the standard ISO 10272 procedure for the isolation of thermotolerant Campylobacter with prolonged cultivation time. Small Campylobacter-like colonies were observed on mCCDA and CASA agar plates after 2-4 days of incubation; dark-field mi

Prevalence, molecular typing and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. isolates in northern Spain.

AIM: To analyse the prevalence, genetic diversity and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. in northern Spain. METHODS AND RESULTS: Campylobacter was isolated from 139 samples of broiler meat and faecal dropping of broiler and swine with a prevalence of 35·4, 62 and 42·8%, respectively. Campylobacter jejuni (n = 55) and Campylobacter coli (n = 31) were identified by multiplex-PCR in meat, faeces and human clinical samples while Campylobacter fetus (n = 3) was exclusively detected in the latter. Fingerprinting by flaA-RFLP and PFGE revealed 68 different genotypes from the 89 isola

A one-year descriptive epidemiology of zoonotic abortifacient pathogen bacteria in farm animals in Turkey.

This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of 10 suspicious pathogenic bacteria in 250 stomach contents of aborted calf, lamb, and goat foetuses in 2019. The 155 positive samples obtained from PCR consisted of 53 (58.88 %) bacteria from 90 lamb samples, 10 (43.47 %) bacteria from 23 goat samples, and 92 (67.15 %) bacteria from 137 calf samples. The five most common bacteria associated with abortions were Brucella melitensis, 52 (20.9 %); B. abortus, 13 (5.2 %); Leptospira spp., 34 (13.6 %); Campylobacter fetus, 52 (20.9 %); and Coxiella burnetii, 4 (1.6 %). The highest rate of B. meliten

Bovine campylobacteriosis in heifer: pathogenesis study and insights in the conventional and molecular diagnosis in an experimental bovine model and field cases.

Campylobacter fetus spp. is a bacterium associated to reproductive losses in cattle worldwide. It is a venereal infectious disease known as bovine campilobacteriosis, with high impact mainly in countries with extensive production systems. Here, we show pathogenesis and diagnostic methods for Campylobacter fetus detection in cervico-vaginal mucus (CVM) samples from heifers experimentally infected and field cases from herds with low reproductive performance by campylobacteriosis infection. Bacterial culture, direct immunofluorescence test and qPCR were used as diagnostic methods to evaluate dete

Extraintestinal campylobacteriosis in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Two cases of clinical disease associated with extraintestinal Campylobacter infection were recently encountered in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). The first case was that of a 3-y-old, male, rhesus macaque experimentally infected with SIV, who presented with abdominal pain and a midabdominal mass and was euthanized. Pathology findings included an abscess within the median liver lobe, fibrinopurulent peritonitis, and intestinal serositis with isolation of Campylobacter fetus from the blood, liver, and the hepatic abscess. The second case was that of a 1-mo-old, female, rhesus macaque who died

Occurrence, serotypes and biotypes of thermophilic Campylobacters isolated in Vienna.

During the 1982-1986 period of all bacterial pathogens found to have caused diarrhoea, 35% belonged to the genus Campylobacter (C). Approximately 70% of the strains were isolated from persons under the age of 30 years, with a distinct peak of occurrence in the autumn. Biotyping and serotyping according to Lior yielded the following results: C. jejuni biotype I: 32.9%, C. jejuni biotype II: 48.6%, C. coli biotype I: 10.3%, C. coli biotype II: 8.2%. From the 121 strains serotyped, 118 (97.5%) were typable. The serotypes most frequently encountered were type 1 (15.7%), 4 (9.9%), 2 and 11 (7.4% ea

Campylobacter enteritis associated with contaminated water.

Approximately 3000 people in Bennington, Vermont, 19% of the population, had a diarrheal illness during the first and second weeks of June 1978. Persons affected reported abdominal cramps (86%), diarrhea (82%), malaise (73%), and headache (47%). The mean duration of illness was 4.6 days. The illness was associated with drinking unboiled water from the town water system. Investigation showed that the entire water system was probably contaminated and the source of contamination was the main unfiltered water source. Bolles Brook. Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Cattle in Mongolia.

Poultry and cattle are the major reservoirs of Campylobacter infection in humans. However, no information is available on Campylobacter spp. in cattle in Mongolia. Thus, this study aimed to assess their prevalence and antimicrobial resistance. Between 2019 and 2023, rectal swabs were collected from cattle on dairy farms around Ulaanbaatar city and in total, 35 Campylobacter spp., including 23 C. jejuni, 7 C. hyointestinalis, 4 C. fetus, and 1 C. lari, were isolated. Multilocus sequence typing of C. jejuni cattle isolates revealed substantial genetic diversity and identified 7 sequence types (S

Campylobacter portucalensis sp. nov., a new species of Campylobacter isolated from the preputial mucosa of bulls.

A new species of the Campylobacter genus is described, isolated from the preputial mucosa of bulls (Bos taurus). The five isolates obtained exhibit characteristics of Campylobacter, being Gram-negative non-motile straight rods, oxidase positive, catalase negative and microaerophilic. Phenotypic characteristics and nucleotide sequence analysis of 16S rRNA and hsp60 genes demonstrated that these isolates belong to a novel species within the genus Campylobacter. Based on hsp60 gene phylogenetic analysis, the most related species are C. ureolyticus, C. blaseri and C. corcagiensis. The whole genome

Campylobacter enteritis presenting with convulsions.

A 14-month old boy presented to the hospital having had a convulsion. Initial work-up was essentially negative except for the presence of a temperature of 40 C. On the second hospital day, the patient began to have diarrhea and Campylobacter jejuni was isolated. This case illustrates that Campylobacter infection may be associated with febrile convulsions, and that these may precede the diarrheal phase of the illness.
