Pharmacologic Management of Cancer Therapeutics-Induced Cardiomyopathy in Adult Cancer Survivors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The number of cancer survivors is exponentially increasing worldwide, due to both advances in cancer detection and treatment strategies, as well as the aging and growth of the population. This decrease in cancer mortality has brought forth a concurrent increase of non-ischemic (toxic) dilated cardiomyopathy in the survivor population, also known as cancer therapeutics-induced cardiomyopathy (CTIC). The optimal pharmacological management for this condition is still elusive, and hence, the focus of this work. RECENT FINDINGS: Our review of the literature did not identify any

Cancer-related fatigue and associated disability in post-treatment cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most prevalent and distressing symptom among cancer patients and survivors. However, research on its prevalence and related disability in the post-treatment survivorship period remains limited. We sought to describe the occurrence of CRF within three time points in the post-treatment survivorship trajectory. METHODS: A self-administered mail-based questionnaire which included the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue (FACT-F) and the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 was sent to three cohorts of disease-free bre

Secondary cancers in breast cancer survivors. A two-centre study.

INTRODUCTION: The risk of secondary cancers in breast cancer survivors remains a significant concern. This study aimed to evaluate the association between treatment modalities and the time to development of secondary cancers in patients after mastectomy or breast-conserving therapy (BCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 6590 patients from 2 centres (Poznan and Gorzow, Poland) treated for breast cancer between 2017 and 2022. A total of 149 patients from this group developed secondary cancer. Data included demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment types

Risk of second primary cancers among survivors of gynecological cancers.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of gynecologic cancers have an increased risk of developing second primary cancers (SPC); however it is unclear which sites have higher risks. We aimed to ascertain risk of SPC among survivors of gynecological cancer, and identify anatomic sites at risk of SPC. METHODS: We queried the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2000-2016) for confirmed cases of index gynecological (cervix uteri [cervical], corpus and uterus [endometrial], ovarian, vaginal, and vulvar) cancers. Risk of SPC was estimated using standardized incidence ratios (SIRs: observed/expected

Second primary anal and oropharyngeal cancers in cervical cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma virus infection is responsible for approximately 31,500 new cancers in the United States annually. Almost all cervical cancers are linked to human papilloma virus infection. As early identification and treatment of cervical cancer improve, the incidence of cervical cancer has decreased and survival has improved. However, survivors continue to remain at risk for other human papilloma virus-related malignancies. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of primary anal and oropharyngeal cancers among women with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix

Exploring peer loss and survivor guilt among young adult survivors of childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: There are nearly 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests at least 25% of these survivors have lost a peer to cancer. The current study investigated the nature of peer loss in a sample of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: Survivors (n = 63) completed an online survey including measures of peer loss, survivor guilt (Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5). Relations between peer loss, survivor guilt, and PTSS were assessed. RESULTS

Neurocognitive outcomes in adult survivors of neuroblastoma: A report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite survival improvements, there is a paucity of data on neurocognitive outcomes in neuroblastoma survivors. This study addresses this literature gap. METHODS: Neurocognitive impairments in survivors were compared to sibling controls from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) using the CCSS Neurocognitive Questionnaire. Impaired emotional regulation, organization, task efficiency, and memory defined as scores ≥90th percentile of sibling norms. Modified Poisson regression models evaluated associations with treatment exposures, era of diagnosis, and chronic conditions. Anal

Health Outcomes Beyond Age 50 Years in Survivors of Childhood Cancer: A Report From the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

PURPOSE: There are limited data on the risk for mortality and health outcomes among the increasing population of older (age >50 years) survivors of childhood cancer during this later stage in life when there is an expected increase in aging-related morbidities. METHODS: We assessed cause-specific mortality, incident new cancers, chronic health conditions (CHCs), frailty, and health status among survivors from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study, conditional on surviving to 50 years. We calculated conditional survival rates, standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), and, for incident new cancers,

Psychoactive medication use and neurocognitive function in adult survivors of childhood cancer: a report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor study.

BACKGROUND: Adult survivors of childhood cancer are at risk for long-term morbidities, which may be managed pharmacologically. Psychoactive medication treatment has been associated with adverse effects on specific neurocognitive processes in non-cancer populations, yet these associations have not been examined in adult survivors of childhood cancer. PROCEDURE: Outcomes were evaluated in 7,080 adult survivors from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS) using a validated self-report Neurocognitive Questionnaire. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (OR

Prevalence and determinants of metabolic syndrome in 2338 childhood cancer survivors: A Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor LATER 2 study.

BACKGROUND: Because the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) might contribute to childhood cancer survivor's excess risk of cardiovascular disease, the authors assessed the prevalence and determinants of MetS in the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS-LATER2) cohort. METHODS: In total, 2338 adult childhood cancer survivors (CCS) were cross-sectionally assessed for the prevalence of MetS, using the Lifelines cohort (N = 132,226 adults without a history of cancer) as references. The prevalence of MetS was clinically assessed using existing classifications, as well as an alternative

New primary neoplasms of the central nervous system in survivors of childhood cancer: a report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

BACKGROUND: Subsequent primary neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) have frequently been described as late events following childhood leukemia and brain tumors. However, the details of the dose-response relationships, the expression of excess risk over time, and the modifying effects of other host and treatment factors have not been well defined. METHODS: Subsequent primary neoplasms of the CNS occurring within a cohort of 14,361 5-year survivors of childhood cancers were ascertained. Each patient was matched with four control subjects by age, sex, and time since original cancer diag

Management of Bone Health in Breast Cancer Survivors.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) face a significantly higher risk of treatment-induced bone loss compared with the general population. Despite clinical guidelines, baseline bone mineral density (BMD) screening and indicated pharmacologic interventions remain consistently underutilized in this population. DESIGN: This review synthesizes current evidence regarding the pathophysiology and incidence of bone loss in BCS. We evaluate the impact of cytotoxic and endocrine therapies on skeletal health and summarize contemporary guidelines for the screening, prevention, and management of cancer
