Candida species are fungal opportunistic pathogens capable of colonizing and infecting various human anatomical sites, where they have to adapt to distinct niche-specific pH conditions. The aim of this study was to analyse the features of Candida albicans and Candida glabrata biofilms developed under neutral and vaginal acidic (pH 4) conditions. C. albicans produced thicker and more filamentous biofilms under neutral than under acidic conditions. On the other hand, the formation of biofilms by C. glabrata was potentiated by the acidic conditions suggesting the high adaptability of this species

In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of Candida parapsilosis sepsis in preterm infants. In this retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 11 cases of Candida parapsilosis sepsis and 13 cases of C. albicans sepsis, the two groups were compared for research using one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), chi2 test, and non-conditional logistic regression analysis. Compared to the C. albicans sepsis group, the C. parapsilosis group demonstrated a significantly lower birth weight (1331.8 +/- 252.41 vs. 1721.2 +/- 589.08) and significantly longer hospital sta

Candida africana taxonomical status is controversial. It was proposed as a separate species within the Candida albicans species complex; however, phylogenetic analyses suggested that it is an unusual variety of C. albicans. The prevalence of C. albicans-related species (Candida dubliniensis and C. africana) as vulvovaginal pathogens is not known in Argentina. Moreover, data on antifungal susceptibility of isolates causing vulvovaginal candidiasis is scarce. The aims of this study were to establish the prevalence of C. dubliniensis and C. africana in vaginal samples and to evaluate the antifung

A 13-month prospective multicenter study including 44 hospitals was carried out to evaluate the epidemiology of Candida parapsilosis complex candidemia in Spain. Susceptibility to amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin was tested by the microdilution colorimetric method. A total of 364 C. parapsilosis complex isolates were identified by molecular methods: C. parapsilosis (90.7%), Candida orthopsilosis (8.2%), and Candida metapsilosis (1.1%). Most candidemias (C. parapsilosis, 76.4%; C. orthopsilosis, 70.0%;

The incidence of infections caused by Candida species has significantly increased over the past three decades. Candida albicans is commonly recognized as the primary causative agent in cases of candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida species, including Candida parapsilosis, are also frequently defined as pathogens. Treatment-resistant infections arise as a result of biofilm formation, which is one of the effective mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Candida infections. However, the mechanisms of action of farnesol, a quorum sensing (QS) system molecule, on biofilm formation by Candida species

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is a serious nosocomial health risk, with widespread outbreaks in hospitals worldwide. Successful management of such outbreaks has depended upon intensive screening of patients to identify those that are colonized and the subsequent isolation or cohorting of affected patients to prevent onward transmission. Here we describe the evaluation of a novel chromogenic agar, CHROMagarTM Candida Plus, for the specific identification of Candida auris isolates from patient samples. Candida auris colonies on CHROMagarTM Candida Plus are pale cream with a distinctive blue halo tha

Background: Blood or tissue culture or histology prove invasive Candida infection, but long time to result, limited feasibility and sensitivity call for new approaches. In this pilot project, we describe the diagnostic potential of quantitating Candida-reactive, CD4/CD69/CD154 positive lymphocytes in blood of patients with invasive Candida infection. Methods: We used flow cytometry quantitating Candida-reactive, CD4/CD69/CD154 positive lymphocytes from peripheral blood of patients with invasive Candida infection, from patients at risk and healthy volunteers as controls. Results: Elevated level

Invasive Candida infection is the fourth most common bloodstream infection. Blood cultures are the current gold standard diagnostic method, however, false negatives remain a clinical challenge. We developed a new technique measuring Candida-reactive T cells as diagnostic read-out for invasive Candida infection. In a pilot study, we followed the treatment course of a patient with an invasive Candida infection of the lumbar vertebral spine. We present the case of a 56-year-old patient with HIV-associated Burkitt lymphoma who developed septic shock during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. For the

BACKGROUND: Although the phospholipase activity is considered a potential virulence determinant of the pathogenic Candida species, the effect of antimycotics on this attribute is not known. Hence we evaluated the phospholipase activity in 10 isolates each of Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis, after their exposure to antifungals.
METHODS: The impact of antimycotics on phospholipase activity was also assessed after exposure of the isolates to sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations of nystatin, amphotericin B and fluconazole.
RESULTS: All Candida isolates investigated exhibited phospholipa

Candida species infection of vascular and urinary catheters is a growing clinical concern. By understanding how biomaterial physicochemical surface properties affect fungal behaviour, catheters could be designed to mechanically discourage infection as a form of 'mechanoprophylaxis'. In this study, silicone surfaces were synthesized with 'stiff' or 'soft' mechanical properties and the subsequent adherence, proliferation and biofilm production of Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis and Nakaseomyces glabratus isolates on these surfaces were analysed. Candida significantly bound more, prolifera

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant yeast demonstrating remarkable persistence in healthcare environments, contributing to nosocomial transmission and outbreak persistence. Increasing disinfectant failure reports have raised concerns regarding infection control policies, as environmental reservoirs play central roles in its spread. We reviewed experimental studies, environmental surveillance reports, and comparative disinfection efficacy data to summarise interactions between C. auris and commonly used biocidal classes: chlorine-based oxidizers, alcohol formulations, biguanides, a

Right-sided infective endocarditis (RSIE) is relatively uncommon, and Candida endocarditis is also rare, with high morbidity and mortality. We report a case of Candida tricuspid valve IE in a 78-year-old man with a native valve and no history of intravenous drug use. He presented with cough, chills, and malaise, and two blood cultures were positive for Candida albicans. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed a mobile mass on the tricuspid valve. He was treated with antifungal and antibiotic agents and discharged on day 39, but later died of aspiration pneumonia. Candida endocarditis sho

Fungal infections are rising, with over 1.5 billion cases and more than 1 million deaths recorded each year. Among these, Candida infections are frequent in at-risk populations and the rapid development of drug resistance and tolerance contributes to their clinical persistence. Few antifungal drugs are available, and their efficacy is declining due to the environmental overuse and the expansion of multidrug-resistant species. One way to prolong their utility is by applying them in combination therapy. Here, we highlight recently described azole potentiators belonging to different categories: n

Prostatitis may present with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) attributable to acute and chronic bacterial infections (NIH Category I/II) or as asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis (NIH Category IV). Patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, (CP/CPPS, NIH Category III) may present with a wide range of symptoms resulting from varied etiology, however, seldom caused by fungal infections. Occasional case reports have been published on prostatitis due to Candida sp. We report a case of an elderly diabetic patient who underwent perurethral prostatic resection (TURP) for ben

Candida albicans infections range from superficial to systemic and are one of the leading causes of fungus-associated nosocomial infections. The innate immune responses during these various infection types differ, suggesting that the host environment plays a key role in modulating the host-pathogen interaction. In addition, C. albicans is able to remodel its cell wall in response to environmental conditions to evade host clearance mechanisms and establish infection in niches, such as the oral and vaginal mucosa. Phagocytes play a key role in clearing C. albicans, which is primarily mediated by

Fungal diseases are severe and have very high morbidity as well as up to 60% mortality for patients diagnosed with invasive fungal infection. In this review, in vitro and in vivo studies provided us with the insight into the role of Candida virulence factors that mediate their success as pathogens, such as: membrane and cell wall (CW) barriers, dimorphism, biofilm formation, signal transduction pathway, proteins related to stress tolerance, hydrolytic enzymes (e.g. proteases, lipases, haemolysins), and toxin production. The review characterized the virulence of clinically important C. albicans

The existence of the multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogenic fungus, Candida auris came to light in 2009. This particular organism is capable of causing nosocomial infections in immunecompromised persons. This pathogen is associated with consistent candidemia with high mortality rate and presents a serious global health threat. Whole genome sequence (WGS) investigation detected powerful phylogeographic Candida auris genotypes which are specialized to particular geological areas indicating dissemination of particular genotype among provinces. Furthermore, this organism frequently exhibits multidr
