Emergence, Transmission, and Containment of Candida auris in the Perioperative Setting.

Candida auris is an emerging, multidrug-resistant fungus that poses a threat in health care settings because of its persistence on surfaces and ability to cause severe infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. First identified in Japan in 2009, C auris has since spread globally, leading to numerous outbreaks. Its unique virulence factors, such as biofilm formation and immune evasion, contribute to its resilience and resistance to eradication. The most vulnerable populations include those with underlying conditions and those undergoing operative or other invasive procedures, highl

Antifungal activity of cephalosporins as an alternative for the combat of Candida auris.

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that presents significant challenges in healthcare settings due to its robust biofilm-forming ability. Conventional antifungal treatments frequently prove ineffective, emphasizing the urgent need for innovative disinfection strategies, including the potential repurposing of existing agents. To evaluate the in vitro and in vivo antifungal and antibiofilm activity of cephalexin, cefixime, and cefotaxime against C. auris. The efficacy of cephalosporins was tested using in vitro assays for minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), biofilm inhibi

Navigating the Challenges of Candida auris Colonization in Rehabilitation Settings.

Candida auris is a highly transmissible yeast that is capable of causing invasive and fatal infections, particularly among persons with underlying medical conditions. Its incidence is rising, especially among patients cared for in post-acute care facilities. Individuals colonized with the yeast may be cared for in inpatient rehabilitation settings, without heightened risk for invasive infection and/or transmission to others, as long as appropriate infection control measures are followed. This article reviews key information for rehabilitation nurses caring for persons with C. auris , including

Candida auris detected in the oral cavity of a dog in Kansas.

Candida auris is an emerging human fungal pathogen, first described in Japan in 2009, and first detected in the United States in 2016. Here, we report the first-ever description of C. auris colonizing a human pet, the first identification of C. auris in a non-human mammal in the United States and the first C. auris isolate from the state of Kansas. While analyzing the oral mycobiome of dogs from a shelter in Kansas, the oral swab from one dog was found to contain C. auris as well as three other fungal species. The presence of C. auris in a dog suggests the possibility of zoonotic transmission

Tools for Detecting a "Superbug": Updates on Candida auris Testing.

Candida auris is an emerging yeast species that has the unique characteristics of patient skin colonization and rapid transmission within health care facilities and the ability to rapidly develop antifungal resistance. When C. auris first started to appear in clinical microbiology laboratories, it could be identified only by using DNA sequencing. In the decade since its first identification outside of Japan, there have been many improvements in the detection of C. auris. These include the expansion of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) d

Emergence of Candida auris in intensive care units in Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Currently, Candida auris is among the most serious emerging pathogens that can be associated with nosocomial infections and outbreaks in intensive care units. Clinicians must be able to identify and manage it quickly. OBJECTIVE: Here, we report for the first time in Algeria seven cases of C. auris infection or colonisation. METHODS AND RESULTS: The strains were isolated from clinical sites including bronchial aspirates (n = 4), wound swabs (n = 1), urine sample (n = 1) and peritoneal fluid (n = 1), in patients admitted to the intensive care unit. Candida auris was identified both

Downregulation of Essential Genes in the Fungal Pathogen Candida auris.

The recent global emergence of the fungal pathogen Candida auris has caused significant concern given that this pathogen often exhibits resistance to multiple antifungal drug classes. In order to effectively combat C. auris infections, there is a dire need to expand our current antifungal arsenal. Essential proteins often serve as targets for antimicrobial compounds, and thus being able to study essential genes in a pathogen of interest is a critical first step in drug development. To identify and characterize essential genes in microorganisms, researchers must be able to manipulate microbial

Impact of Candida auris Infection in a Neutropenic Murine Model.

Candida auris has become a global public health threat due to its multidrug resistance and persistence. Currently, there are limited murine models to study C. auris infection. Those models use a combination of cyclophosphamide and cortisone acetate, suppressing both innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we compare C. auris infection in two neutrophil-depleted murine models in which innate immunity is targeted using the monoclonal antibodies 1A8 and RB6-8C5.

Flavonoids as a Potential Antifungal Alternative Against Candida auris (Candidozyma auris) from Clades III and IV.

Candida auris is a critical emerging pathogen of high priority due to its ability to develop multidrug resistance to various antifungals. Given the increase in cases associated with C. auris, it is essential to evaluate new candidates with antifungal potential. In this context, flavonoids represent a promising source for the development of new therapeutic alternatives. In this study eleven flavonoids were evaluated for their antifungal activity against C. auris strains from clades III and IV. The flavonoids showed dose-dependent inhibition of C. auris growth. Toxicity tests were conducted usin

Fungicidal effects of eight disinfectants against resistant Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris), Aspergillus fumigatus, and Trichophyton indotineae.

UNLABELLED: Disinfectants are widely used in hospital environments to control bacterial, viral, and fungal hospital-acquired infections. In recent years, nosocomial infections caused by drug-resistant fungi, such as Candidozyma auris, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Trichophyton indotineae, have posed an increasing transmission risk among patients and healthcare workers, making treatment more challenging. Although many disinfectants are routinely applied in hospital settings, data on their efficacy against drug-resistant fungi remain limited. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal efficacy of e
