Global distribution, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of human intestinal capillariasis, 2000-2025: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal capillariasis, caused by Capillaria philippinensis, is an uncommon but potentially fatal parasitic infection associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Despite its sporadic occurrence, its clinical severity and diagnostic challenges warrant a comprehensive synthesis of available evidence. This systematic review aimed to summarize the geographic distribution, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment outcomes of human intestinal capillariasis. METHODS: A systematic search of six electronic databases (PubMed, S

An obstinate case of intestinal capillariasis.

A patient who experienced episodes of intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensis 16 times is presented. The patient was first seen in July 1967 with the parasitosis and was treated with thiabendazole. He experienced a relapse in October 1967. He was readmitted to the hospital again in 1969, twice in 1971, twice in 1972, twice in 1973, once each in 1975, 1976, three times in 1978 and twice in 1979. During this period he was treated with various dosages of thiabendazole, mebendazole and flubendazole. At the final admission he was treated with mebendazole, 600 mg per day for 49

Intestinal capillariasis: a cause of chronic diarrhea and hypoalbuminemia.

Seventeen cases of intestinal capillariasis in Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen University, Thailand were reviewed. The mean age was 40.41 years with a range from 21 to 69 years. Most cases had intermittent or continuous voluminous watery diarrhea for one month to three years with hypoalbuminemia. Borborygmi, vague abdominal pain, weight loss and pedal edema were significant associated symptoms. Fecal examination was the most useful for diagnosis by finding the Capillaria philippinensis ova in all cases. Mebendazole 400 mg per day for 20 to 28 days is the treatment of choice. Usually, relapse a

Hematology, intestinal parasites, and selected disease antibodies from a population of bobcats (Felis rufus) in central Arkansas.

Eight bobcats with adjoining or overlapping home ranges were examined. Hematological values were within previously reported ranges. Six bobcats demonstrated antibody titers to Toxoplasma gondii. Isospora spp., Taenia taeniaeformis, Spirometra mansoides, Physoloptera rara, Toxocara cati, Strongyloides spp., Trichurus spp., Capillaria spp., and Ancyclostoma spp. were found also in the animals examined. The mean number of parasite species per host was 4.1. All bobcats tested negative for serum antibodies to Rocky Mountain spotted fever (Rickettsia rickettsii). Two bobcats had titers less than or

Human intestinal capillariasis: a rare case report from non-endemic area (Andhra Pradesh, India).

Human intestinal capillariasis is caused by Capillaria philippinensis. This disease is endemic in Philippines and Thailand. To the best of our knowledge, we report the third case of human intestinal capillariasis from India and the first case from Andhra Pradesh, which is a non-endemic area. A 40-year-old female presented with diarrhoea, vomiting, decreased urinary output, ascitis, pedal oedema, hypoalbuminemia, and electrolyte imbalance. Microscopic examination of stool sample revealed the presence of ova, larvae, and adult worms of C. philippinensis. Patient recovered from the disease after

Hepatic capillariasis in children: report of 3 cases in Brazil.

Capillaria hepatica is a helminth that may cause an extremely rare condition of parasitic hepatitis. Only 29 cases have been published, 2 of them in Brazil. We report here 3 cases of children in Brazil with massive hepatic capillariasis who presented the characteristic triad of this type of infection, i.e., persistent fever, hepatomegaly, and eosinophilia. The diagnosis was made by liver biopsy. All children responded well after treatment with thiabendazole (case 1), albendazole (case 3), and albendazole in combination with a corticoid (case 2). Case 1 has been followed-up for 24 years, an eve

Hepatic capillariasis: first case report in the Republic of Korea.

We report a case of massive hepatic infection by Capillaria hepatica in a 14-month-old girl who presented with the symptom triad of persistent fever, hepatomegaly, and leukocytosis with eosinophilia. Twenty-five cases of human infection with this parasite, mostly in children, have been reported in the literature. This is the first case of hepatic capillariasis reported in the Republic of Korea. The diagnosis was made by needle biopsy of the liver. Scanning electron microscopic examination of the biopsy specimen was also performed. Thiabendazole therapy was initiated and the patient developed l

Human intestinal capillariasis in an area of nonendemicity: case report and review.

We report a rare case of human intestinal capillariasis in a young Colombian man who presented with abdominal pain and mild, self-limited diarrhea. Capillaria eggs were visualized in the feces, and treatment with mebendazole (200 mg/d for 3 weeks) resulted in clinical and parasitological cure. To our knowledge, this is the first case in a South American person and the second case reported in Europe. This case highlights the acquisition of endemic intestinal parasitosis far away from classically considered areas of endemicity. We review the English-language literature on human intestinal capill

Coccidia and intestinal nematodes of East Central Illinois cats.

In a fecal examination survey (1975-1976) of 217 cats from laboratory colonies, a humane society shelter, and homes in east central Illinois, Toxocara mystax eggs were found in 32%, Toxascaris leonina eggs in 6%, Ancylostoma eggs in 9%, Capillaria eggs in 4%, Isospora felis oocysts in 23%, Isospora rivolta oocysts in 24%, and Toxoplasma or Besnoitia oocysts in 1%. The laboratory and humane shelter cats were the most heavily infected. Isospora felis and I rivolta could not be transmitted to 2 pups by feeding oocysts from the cat or to 2 other pups by feeding the organs of mice that had been fed

Antibody response after feline panleukopenia virus vaccination in kittens with and without intestinal parasites.

OBJECTIVES: Vaccinations should only be given to healthy cats, and deworming before vaccination is generally recommended; however, so far, no study has investigated the influence of intestinal parasitic infection on the immune response in kittens. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the antibody response to feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) vaccination in kittens with and without intestinal parasites. METHODS: Overall, 74 healthy kittens were included. Of these, 17 had intestinal parasites (12/17 Toxocara cati, 6/17 Cystoisospora felis, 1/17 Capillaria species). Both kittens with

Predators in northern Germany are reservoirs for parasites of One Health concern.

Urbanisation and invasion of wildlife into urban areas as well as human leisure activities create diverse wildlife-domestic animal-human interfaces, increasing the risk of (zoonotic) parasite spillover from sylvatic to domestic and synanthropic cycles. This study investigated the endo- and ectoparasite fauna, emphasising on parasites of One Health Concern, of the most common predators in northern Germany between November 2013 and January 2016. Eighty red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 18 stone martens (Martes foina) and nine raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were available for the study. Overall

Pathologic Findings in Ramphastids from 1994 to 2013.

The family Ramphastidae includes toucans (Ramphastos sp), mountain toucans (Andigena sp), toucanets (Aulacorhynchus sp, Selenidera sp), and aracaris (Pteroglossus sp). These birds are endemic to Central and South America and are popular birds for zoological parks and as companion animals. This retrospective study summarizes the histologic findings of 273 toucans, 24 mountain toucans, 240 aracaris, and 64 toucanets (601 total specimens) submitted to 4 diagnostic laboratories from 1994 through January 2013. Infectious diseases were most common (53.1%, 319/601), followed by nutrition-based deposi

Attempts to modify treatment of intestinal capillariasis.

Attempts to reduce the standard treatment of intestinal capillariasis of 200 mg mebendazole twice daily for 20 days were not successful. Two of 13 patients given mebendazole at single daily dosages of 500 mg per day for 16 days relapsed 3 to 6 months after treatment. Attempts to reduce the treatment to 14 days were even less satisfactory in that 4 of 8 patients treated experienced relapses 2 to 9 months later. Since intestinal capillariasis can be fatal it is recommended to continue the use of the standard schedule of 400 mg mebendazole daily for 20 days for new cases and 30 days for relapsed

INTESTINAL AND BLOOD PARASITES IN SCARLET (ARA MACAO) AND GREAT GREEN (ARA AMBIGUA) MACAWS IN WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTERS IN COSTA RICA.

Costa Rica undertakes continuous efforts to recover the native population of macaw species through rehabilitation programs for breeding and releasing birds in protected areas. In the summer of 2018, a total of 107 scarlet (Ara macao) and 93 great green (Ara ambigua) macaws were sampled in four wildlife rehabilitation centers in Costa Rica. Fecal samples representing 200 individuals were analyzed for intestinal parasites, and 23 individuals were sampled for hemoparasites. Ascaridia and Capillaria were found in fecal samples. No hemoparasites were found. The distribution of percentage of infecti

Probable hepatic capillariosis and hydatidosis in an adolescent from the late Roman period buried in Amiens (France).

Two calcified objects recovered from a 3rd to 4th-century grave of an adolescent in Amiens (Northern France) were identified as probable hydatid cysts. By using thin-section petrographic techniques, probable Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) eggs were identified in the wall of the cysts. Human hepatic capillariosis has not been reported from archaeological material so far, but could be expected given the poor level of environmental hygiene prevalent in this period. Identification of tissue-dwelling parasites such as C. hepaticum in archaeological remains is particularly dependent o
