A retrospective long term study of teeth restored with prefabricated carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin posts.

The Composipost endodontic post, made of stretched aligned carbon fibers embedded in an epoxy-resin matrix, has since the beginning of the nineties been widely used for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the treatment outcome of the Composipost system up to 7 years. In a study published 1998, 236 patients treated during 1992-93 by seven Swedish general dental private practitioners were studied. Five of the former seven private practitionersi consented to participate in this follow up of that study. Thus the material was reduced

Bio-Inspired Optimization of AWJM Parameters for Enhanced Machining of Glass and Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Composites.

Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) of fiber-reinforced composites requires balanced control of surface roughness, kerf width, and material removal rate. This study proposes a statistically bound, benchmarked, and reproducible regression-desirability optimization workflow for the glass fiber-reinforced composite (GFRC) and carbon fiber-reinforced composite (CFRC) using the published Taguchi L9 AWJM data set of Rao et al. as a secondary-data benchmark. Abrasive mass flow rate (AMFR), cutting speed rate (SR), and stand-off distance (SOD) were modeled against surface roughness (Ra), kerf width (K

Enhancing thermal conductivity and flame resistance of carbon fiber composites using CNT-infused multiphase graphene resins.

Carbon fiber composites (CFC) are distinguished by their remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, rendering them exceptionally suitable for various applications. This study explores replacing the conventional polymer epoxy matrix in CFCs with macropore-infused graphene nanocomposite emulsion thermosets (MINETs) based on easily sourced materials. The explored MINETs are formed from epoxy resin, graphene particles, and different oils as working fluids. This approach allows CFCs to exhibit multifunctional properties, including enhanced thermal conductivity and flame resistance, making them ideal for

Salt Spray Aging Behavior and Life Prediction of Thermoplastic Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Poly(methyl methacrylate) Composites.

To investigate the salt spray durability of recyclable carbon fiber-reinforced poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composites (CF/PMMA), laminates were fabricated via vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), and salt spray accelerated aging tests were conducted. Water uptake tests, mechanical tests (0°/90° tensile, flexural, short-beam shear), and SEM micro-characterization of surface and fracture morphologies were performed to compare the performance degradation and interfacial deterioration of the two systems under salt spray conditions, and the residual strength was predicted using the

Monomer conversion enables chemical recycling of high-performance plastics and carbon fiber composites without monomer separation.

High-performance engineering plastics exhibit outstanding mechanical robustness and chemical stability, yet their robust structures often hinder chemical recyclability. Here we report a monomer conversion strategy that enables chemical recycling of high-strength and chemically stable plastics without monomer separation. The plastics are constructed by reversibly cross-linking an amino-terminated poly(aryl ether ketone) macromonomer (PAEK) with its aldehyde-functionalized derivative (PA2EK) through dynamic imine bonds, affording reversibly cross-linked PAEK (rPAEK) networks. The resulting rPAEK

Enhancing Enzymatic Electrocatalysis of CO2 to Formate Using Graphene-Grown Carbon Fiber as a Conductive Carrier.

The bioelectrochemical system was constructed to enable efficient formate synthesis from CO2 while decreasing the high cost to the natural cofactor nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The enzyme cathode was prepared using the carbon fiber (CF) with in situ grown graphene (rGO/CF), where copper nanoparticles were deposited as the electronic mediator to enable the electric-driven cofactor regeneration. Additionally, ionic liquids were employed as electrolytes to improve the CO2 capture efficiency and enhance the electron transfer capacity. Compared to the common CF, the rGO/CF significantly impro

Efficiently enhancing toughness of polylactic acid film through synergistic effect of bamboo charcoal and carbon fiber.

Polylactic acid (PLA) film has great potential for application, but its poor toughness is an insurmountable gap at present. For this issue, two kinds of carbon materials (bamboo charcoal and carbon fiber) with different shapes are used as toughening agents, and KH-550 silane coupling agent is introduced to form a solid link between the toughening agents and the PLA matrix to improve the compatibility. When PLA is stretched and under high elastic deformation, an ultra-fine cavity is formed on one side of K-UFBC (KH-550 modified ultra fine bamboo charcoal), which absorbs most of the fracture ene

Evaluating long-term construct stability in metastatic spine cancer patients with carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone instrumentation.

OBJECTIVE: Metastatic spine disease significantly impacts the oncological population, often requiring surgical intervention to address spinal instability. Traditional constructs, including titanium-based long-segment instrumentation and short-segment cement augmentation, have been the mainstay in managing these patients. Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) hardware and shorter-segment instrumentation have demonstrated benefits of improved surveillance, earlier recurrence detection, and shorter operative time. This study evaluated the long-term experience of a single center

Study on Low Temperature Cracking Resistance of Carbon Fiber Geogrid Reinforced Asphalt Pavement Surface Combined Body.

Currently, there are limitations in the research on the use of carbon fiber geogrids to prevent low-temperature cracking in asphalt pavements. This study aims to comparatively investigate the effects of carbon fiber-based geogrid type and dense-graded asphalt concrete mixture (AC) surface combined body (SCB) type on the low-temperature cracking resistance of reinforced asphalt pavement through low-temperature bending damage tests. Two geogrid types were prepared: a carbon fiber geogrid (CCF) and a glass/carbon fiber composite qualified geogrid (GCF). Two SCB types were studied: AC-13/AC-20 and

Dynamic In-Plane Compression and Fracture Growth in a Quasi-Isotropic Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composite.

This study presents an experimental investigation of the quasi-static and dynamic behavior of a quasi-isotropic carbon-fiber-reinforced composite subjected to in-plane compressive loading. The experiments were performed at strain rates ranging from 4×10-5 to ∼1200 s-1 to quantifythe strain-rate-dependent response, failure propagation, and damage morphology using advanced camera systems. Fiber bridging, kink band formation, dominance of interlaminar failure, and inter-fiber failure fracture planes are evidenced through post-mortem analysis. The evolution of the in-plane compressive strength, fa

Mechanical adaptations in walking using carbon fiber ankle foot orthoses for patients with peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of community-based walking programs for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) can be limited by calf claudication during exercise. Recent evidence finds adding carbon fiber ankle foot orthoses (AFO) to a walking program can result in improvements in patient mobility and delay claudication onset when walking. RESEARCH QUESTION: How may carbon fiber AFO alter ankle walking mechanics and corresponding triceps surae muscle recruitment in a manner that could improve patient mobility? METHODS: In this repeated measures cohort study, fifteen patients with PAD w

Outcomes of Long Bones Treated With Carbon-Fiber Nails for Oncologic Indications: International Multi-institutional Study.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary nail fixation is commonly used for prophylactic stabilization of impending and fixation of complete pathological fractures of the long bones. However, metallic artifacts complicate imaging evaluation for bone healing or tumor progression and postoperative radiation planning. Carbon-fiber implants have gained popularity as an alternative, given their radiolucency and superior axial bending. This study evaluates incidences of mechanical and nonmechanical complications. METHODS: Adult patients (age 18 years and older) treated with carbon-fiber nails for impending/compl

Osseointegration behavior of carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone composites modified with amino groups: An in vivo study.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has become increasingly popular in dentistry and orthopedics due to its excellent chemical stability, reliable biosafety, and low elastic modulus. However, PEEK's biomechanical strength and bioactivity are limited and need to be increased as an implant material. The previous study in vitro has shown that the amino-functionalized carbon fiber reinforced PEEK (A-30%-CPEEK) possessed enhanced mechanical property and bioactivity. This study aims to evaluate the effect of amino groups modification on the osseointegration behavior of carbon fiber reinforced PEEK (30%-CPEE

Surface Finishing of FDM-Fabricated Amorphous Polyetheretherketone and Its Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Composite by Dry Milling.

In recent years, many investigations have been devoted to fused deposition modeling (FDM) of high-performance polymer-polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK (CF/PEEK) for biomedical and aerospace applications. However, the staircase effect naturally brought about by FDM restricts further applications of 3D-printed PEEK and its composites in high-temperature molds, medical implants, and precision components, which require better or customized surface qualities. Hence, this work aimed to reduce the staircase effect and improve the surface quality of 3D-printed PEEK and CF/P

Static and Dynamic Performances of Chopped Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Mortar and Concrete Incorporated with Disparate Lengths.

The impact load, such as seismic and shock wave, sometimes causes severe damage to the reinforced concrete structures. This study utilized different lengths of chopped carbon fibers to develop a carbon-fiber-reinforced mortar (CFRM) and carbon-fiber-reinforced concrete (CFRC) with high impact and anti-shockwave resistance. The different lengths (6, 12, and 24 mm) of chopped carbon fibers were pneumatically dispersed and uniformly mixed into the cement with a 1% weight proportion. Then the CFRM and CFRC specimens were made for static and dynamic tests. The compressive and flexural strengths of

Metal Nanoparticle Modified Carbon-Fiber Microelectrodes Enhance Adenosine Triphosphate Surface Interactions with Fast-Scan Cyclic Voltammetry.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important rapid signaling molecule involved in a host of pathologies in the body. Historically, ATP is difficult to directly detect electrochemically with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) due to limited interactions at bare carbon-fibers. Systematic investigations of how ATP interacts at electrode surfaces is necessary for developing more sensitive electrochemical detection methods. Here, we have developed gold nanoparticle (AuNP), and platinum nanoparticle (PtNP) modified carbon-fiber microelectrodes coupled to FSCV to measure the extent to which ATP inte
