Unintentional carbon monoxide poisonings were identified through death certificates, by hyperbaric chambers, and by laboratories required to report carboxyhemoglobin levels greater than 12%. From 1986 to 1991, 981 cases were reported, including 174 deaths. Deaths most often resulted from fire-related carbon monoxide intoxication (36.2%), followed by motor vehicle exhaust (34.5%), and furnaces (10.3%). Among nonfatal cases, furnaces were the leading source of carbon monoxide exposure (44.3%), followed by motor vehicle exhaust (22.8%). The importance of furnaces and other home heating devices in

The Coburn-Forster-Kane equation (CFKE) is a well-tested model for prediction of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) formation due to carbon monoxide (CO) exposure in humans. There have been few and relatively poorly tested attempts to implement a CFKE for rats. Such an implementation is of interest because many experiments on the effects of CO in rats were done without measuring COHb. To extrapolate from rats to humans requires a rat version of the CFKE. Rats were exposed to 150, 250, 500, and 1000 ppm CO for up to 240 min. Blood gases and COHb were measured. A CFKE was implemented for rats by using par

Plasma leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) levels and respiration rates of isolated liver mitochondria were studied in carbon monoxide (CO)-poisoned rats sampled at respiratory arrest. An increase in LAP levels paralleled a decrease in the respiratory control ratio and the ADP/O ratio. The results suggest that the damage to mitochondria closely correlates with the liver damage in rats during acute CO poisoning.

Dinitrogen (N2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) are all abundant and readily available chemical feedstocks. The functionalization of N2 with CO and CO2 is of considerable interest and importance, but remains a formidable challenge, owing to their high thermodynamic and kinetic stability. Here, we report an unprecedented cascade coupling of N2, CO, CO2, and alkynes within a dititanium framework. Sequential reactions of N2, CO, alkynes (R1C≡CR2), and CO2 with a dititanium tetrahydride complex at room temperature selectively afforded the corresponding four-component coupling produ

BACKGROUND: It is widely known that carbon dioxide (CO2) arc welding generates carbon monoxide (CO). However, to the best of our knowledge, no case reports have been published regarding CO poisoning in CO2 arc welders. Therefore, we aimed to report a case of CO poisoning-induced encephalopathy in a CO2 arc welder in the Republic of Korea to inform about the dangers of CO exposure among CO2arc welders.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old man working as a CO2 arc welder for 15 years visited a local hospital with a tremor, involuntary urination, and speaking gibberish, on April 9, 2019. He stated t

Conversion of CO2 into valuable molecules is a field of intensive investigation with the aim of developing scalable technologies for making fuels using renewable energy sources. While electrochemical reduction into CO and formate are approaching industrial maturity, a current challenge is obtaining more reduced products like methanol. However, literature on the matter is scarce, and even more for the use of molecular catalysts. Here, we demonstrate that cobalt phthalocyanine, a well-known catalyst for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to CO, can also catalyze the reaction from CO2 or CO to

The manufacture of carbon black is known to generate carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide in the 'production gas' and the pyrolysis products of the 'production gas', respectively. Adverse health effects have been reported as associated with both contaminants (coronary heart disease with carbon monoxide and respiratory morbidity with sulphur dioxide). A major cross-sectional and longitudinal respiratory morbidity study is being conducted to assess the effects of exposure to carbon black on lung function, on chest X-rays and on responses to a questionnaire. The questionnaire includes questions on

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gasotransmitter generated by heme oxygenase (HO) isoforms during heme catabolism. The inducible HO-1 produces CO under conditions of redox imbalance, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. On the other hand, HO-2 constitutively generates CO, primarily during the physiological turnover of heme. Extensive evidence indicates that CO exerts autocrine effects by targeting hemoproteins, including soluble guanylyl cyclase, cyclooxygenase, and cytochromes. Furthermore, CO regulates many biological processes within the brain, including mitochondrial biogenesis, potassium c

Acetogens are promising industrial biocatalysts for upgrading syngas, a gas mixture containing CO, H2 and CO2 into fuels and chemicals. However, CO severely inhibits growth of many acetogens, often requiring extensive adaptation to enable efficient CO conversion (carboxydotrophy). Here, we adapt the thermophilic acetogen Thermoanaerobacter kivui to use CO as sole carbon and energy source. Isolate CO-1 exhibits rapid growth on CO and syngas (co-utilizing CO, H2 and CO2) in batch and continuous cultures (µmax ~ 0.25 h-1). The carboxydotrophic phenotype is attributed to the mobilization of a CO-d

Moorella species are thermophilic acetogens that primarily produce acetate from one-carbon (C1) compounds including CO, CO2 (+H2), methanol and formate. Notably, Moorella caeni DSM 21394T displays a hydrogenogenic metabolism on CO and an acetogenic metabolism on methanol. Furthermore, M. caeni is unable to use CO2 (+H2) and grows only on formate in the presence of a methanogen or when thiosulfate is added as an electron acceptor. Presently, all theoretical frameworks for C1 metabolism in Moorella species are derived from experimental and genomic analyses of Moorella thermoacetica, which exhibi

Recently, a new automated carbon monoxide (CO) rebreathing method (aCO) to estimate haemoglobin mass (Hbmass) was introduced. The aCO method uses the same CO dilution principle as the widely used optimised CO rebreathing method (oCO). The two methods differ in terms of CO administration, body position, and rebreathing time. Whereas with aCO, CO is administered automatically by the system in a supine position of the subject, with oCO, CO is administered manually by an experienced operator with the subject sitting. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify possible differences in Hbmass e

The aim of the study was to investigate the features of damage to the structures of the brain in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The results of forensic, microscopic and morphometric studies of the brain of 78 corpses died from acute carbon monoxide poisoning are presented. The peculiarities of damage to the nervous tissue, the glial complex, as well as changes in the structures of blood vessels and the state of intravascular blood with the formation of aggregates, sludge, and blood clots were revealed. These changes along with perivascular and pericellular edema indicate the agonal deat

Carbon monoxide intoxication is one of the most common types of poisoning in the world. Cardiac manifestations after exposure to carbon monoxide including myocardial ischemia, heart failure and arrhythmias have been reported. A 17-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency service with the complaints of palpitation, headache and nausea. Electrocardiogram revealed supraventricular tachycardia. The arterial blood gas analysis was normal. Her carboxyhemoglobin level was 19% and oxygen treatment was started promptly. Echocardiographic examination demonstrated normal cardiac function. To the best

A comprehensive mathematical model, describing the respiration, circulation, oxygen metabolism, and ventilatory control, is assembled for the purpose of predicting acute ventilation changes from exposure to carbon monoxide in both humans and animals. This Dynamic Physiological Model is based on previously published work, reformulated, extended, and combined into a single model. Model parameters are determined from literature values, fitted to experimental data, or allometrically scaled between species. The model predictions are compared with ventilation-time history data collected in goats exp

Carbon monoxide exposure is an important public health issue that poses a significant, albeit uncommon risk in aviation. Exposure is most common in single engine piston-driven aircraft where air is passed over the exhaust manifold to serve as cabin heat. Effective primary prevention of this exposure is the regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft exhaust systems, as required by law. For situations at special risk should exposure occur, and where there is concern for the public safety, installation of active warning devices for CO intrusion into cockpits may improve secondary prevention.

During fires, victims can inhale significant carbon monoxide (CO) and cyanide (CN) gases, which may cause synergistic toxicity in humans. Oxygen therapy is the specific treatment for CO poisoning, but the treatment of CN toxicity is controversial. To examine the indication for treatment of CN toxicity, we have established a canine model to delineate the natural history of combined CO and CN poisoning. In seven dogs (24 +/- 3 kg), CO gas (201 +/- 43 mL) was administered by closed-circuit inhalation. Then, potassium CN was intravenously (i.v.) infused (0.072 mg.kg-1.min-1) for 17.5 +/- 3.0 min.
