BackgroundSexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) disproportionately affect key populations in Canada. For example, recent estimates suggested that the proportion of people living with hepatitis C is the highest among people who use injection drugs and that gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men represent a high proportion of new cases of infectious syphilis. Understanding what STBBIs test users and potential testers perceive as important aspects of testing will help inform testing initiatives. We aimed to determine aspects of STBBI testing that are important to a d

HIV self-testing (HIVST), which allows people to test in private, is an innovative testing strategy that has been shown to increase HIV testing among men. Delivering HIVST kits to men via women is one promising assisted partner service strategy. Little research has been conducted on HIVST secondary distribution to men by women living with HIV (WLWH) in the Caribbean and other settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the perspectives of WLWH, their male partners, and healthcare professionals on the perceived advantages and disadvantages of HIVST, and recommendations for implementing HI

Motivation for the study: the information available on the epidemiology of malaria in the Colombian Caribbean region is incomplete, poorly systematized and its dissemination is limited. This has led to a lack of knowledge of its magnitude and a low perception of its importance as a public health problem. Main findings: the behavior of malaria is endemic-epidemic, with low to very low transmission, focused and with irregular outbreaks. Plasmodium vivax infections predominate. Implications: the results of this study contribute to improve evidence-based decision making for the implementation of m

BACKGROUND: We examined whether cannabis use contributes to the increased risk of psychotic disorder for non-western minorities in Europe.
METHODS: We used data from the EU-GEI study (collected at sites in Spain, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands) on 825 first-episode patients and 1026 controls. We estimated the odds ratio (OR) of psychotic disorder for several groups of migrants compared with the local reference population, without and with adjustment for measures of cannabis use.
RESULTS: The OR of psychotic disorder for non-western minorities, adjusted for age, sex, a

BACKGROUND: Hurricanes are the immediate ways that people experience climate impacts in the Caribbean. These events affect socio-ecological systems and lead to major disruptions in the healthcare system, having effects on health outcomes. In September 2017, Puerto Rico (PR) and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) experienced one of the most catastrophic hurricane seasons in recent history (Hurricane Irma was a Category 5 and Hurricane María was a Category 4 when they hit PR).
OBJECTIVE: This study examines environmental stressors experienced by women with gynecologic (GYN) cancers from PR

Chikungunya is caused by an alphavirus that is transmitted to humans via the Aedes species mosquito. Chikungunya is endemic to tropical Africa and South and Southeast Asia, but over the past decade, the geographic distribution of the virus has been expanding rapidly. The disease is characterized by fever and severe polyarthritis, and although symptoms typically resolve within 7 to 10 days, some patients experience persistent arthritis and arthralgias for months to years. In December 2013, the first local transmission of chikungunya virus in the Americas was identified in the Caribbean Island of

OBJECTIVE: Jamaica is one of the largest countries in the Caribbean with a population of 2 706 500. Prevalence of human immunodificency virus (HIV) in Jamaica is high, while that of tuberculosis (TB) is recorded to be low. In this study, we have estimated the burden of serious fungal infections and some other mycoses in Jamaica.
METHODS: All published papers reporting on rates of fungal infections in Jamaica and the Caribbean were identified through extensive search of the literature. We also extracted data from published papers on epidemiology and from the World Health Organization (WHO) TB

As part of the evaluation of the French plan for the elimination of measles and rubella, we conducted a seroprevalence survey in 2013, aimed at updating seroprevalence data for people 18-32 years old. A secondary objective was to estimate measles incidence in this population during the 2009-2011 outbreak, and thus estimate the exhaustiveness of measles mandatory reporting. We used a cross-sectional survey design, targeting blood donors 18-32 years old, living in France since 2009, who came to give blood in a blood collecting site. We included 4647 people in metropolitan France, 806 people in R

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) is a neglected tropical disease caused by penetration of female sand fleas, Tunga penetrans, into a person's skin usually in their feet. The disease inflicts immense pain and suffering on millions of people, particularly children. The condition is most prevalent in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, there is no standard drug treatment for tungiasis. The available treatment options are fairly limited and unrealistic to use in endemic areas; as a result, in desperation, the affected people do more harm to themselves by extracting the fl

Previously derived polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for Alzheimer's disease (AD) perform inconsistently across diverse ancestries. We developed an APOE-independent multiancestry AD PRS using genome-wide association study summary statistics applied to European ancestry, African American, Caribbean Hispanic and East Asian cohorts. PRS performance was evaluated in a large independent multiancestry dataset and validated in several additional multiancestry cohorts. The PRS was significantly associated with AD in European ancestry, African American, Caribbean Hispanic and Native American Hispanic groups

Yellow fever is an important and potentially fatal infection in tropical regions of Africa, South America, eastern Panama in Central America and Trinidad in the Caribbean. Yellow fever vaccination is not only crucial to reduce the disease risk and mortality in individuals travelling to these areas, but also an important public health measure to prevent the spread of the disease. Despite generally considered as a safe vaccine, yellow fever vaccine can rarely be associated with severe adverse reactions including yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD). Here, we report the

Black people in the UK, in the Caribbean, and to a lesser extent in the USA, experience coronary heart disease events at different rates than white people. Despite having higher prevalence of hypertension, cigarette smoking and diabetes, black males have significantly lower coronary heart disease rates than white males, whereas no significant differences have been detected in females. The only known risk factor differences that could account for the difference in CHD rates are higher HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides that are seen in blacks compared with whites. Obesity and, in particula

Patients with heart failure (HF) often have multiple chronic conditions and are at increased risk for severe disease and mortality when infected by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Furthermore, disparities in outcomes with COVID-19 have been associated with both racial/ethnic identity but also social determinants of health. Among older, urban-dwelling, minority patients with HF, we sought to characterize medical and non-medical factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Patients with HF living in Boston and New York City over 60 years of age participating in the Screening for Car

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyoma has been reported to be a worse problematic disease for African American than Caucasian women in the US. Data are almost non-existent for other populations of African ancestry. Our aim was to investigate the hypothesis of an equivalent influence of ethnicity on uterine leiomyomas for women of a French African-Caribbean population.
BASIC PROCEDURES: Retrospective analysis of hysterectomies performed from 2010 to 2015 at the teaching hospital of Guadeloupe (French West Indies), where most inhabitants are of West African origin, was carried out. Data of the 899 hyst

While international efforts have characterized genetic variation in millions of individuals, the interplay of environmental, social, cultural and genetic factors is poorly understood for most worldwide populations. The province of Quebec in Canada has been the site of numerous genetic studies, often focusing on Mendelian diseases in founder sub-populations. Here, we analyze genome-wide genotyped variation in 29,337 Quebec residents from the multi-ancestry population-based cohort CARTaGENE (CaG) who provided DNA samples. We also sequence the whole-genome of 2,173 CaG participants with four gran

INTRODUCTION: Data about interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) epidemiology in the Afro-Caribbean population is lacking. Differences in incidence and prevalence compared to European populations have already been reported. The main objective of this study was to estimate ILD incidence in Guadeloupe overall and by etiology. The secondary objective was to determine the clinical, demographic, and environmental characteristics of patients with ILD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a descriptive epidemiological study to estimate the incidence and prevalence of ILD in Guadeloupe between 2013 and 2019

Identifying ancestry-specific molecular profiles of late-onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD) in brain tissue is crucial to understand novel mechanisms and develop effective interventions in non-European, high-risk populations. We performed gene differential expression (DE) and consensus network-based analyses in RNA-sequencing data of postmortem brain tissue from 39 Caribbean Hispanics (CH). To identify ancestry-concordant and -discordant expression profiles, we compared our results to those from two independent non-Hispanic White (NHW) samples (n = 731). In CH, we identified 2802 significant DE

BACKGROUND: As with many other populations, abuse of older adults is a growing problem across the Africa Diaspora. Modernization and urbanization are eroding the traditional values of respect for older adults. Also, older adults living in environments with limited social and economic resources, and having no means of economic support create a recipe for elder abuse and neglect.
METHODS: This article reviews the current literature on the epidemiology, risk factors, and interventions used for elder abuse across the African Diaspora.
RESULTS: Reports of elder abuse range from 24.9% to 81.1% acr

OBJECTIVES: To examine differences in population based rates of gonorrhoea and chlamydia between black ethnic groups in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority.
METHODS: Episodes of gonorrhoea or chlamydia recorded among attenders at 11 genitourinary clinics in south and central London from 1 January 1994 to 31 December 1995 were retrieved. Complete data on chlamydia were only available for women. Ethnic group was assigned according to census categories--white, black Caribbean, black African, black other, Asian, or other. We calculated yearly incidence rates for episodes of gonorrhoe

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral arterial disease, as a result of atherosclerosis, is the commonest reason for lower limb revascularisation and amputation in England. We describe the prevalence rate of these procedures among the White, South Asian and Black populations living in England and describe the association of ethnicity to amputation, both with and without, revascularisation.
METHOD: We extracted data from 90 million English hospital admissions between 2003 and 2009 and calculated prevalence rates among 50-84 year olds using census data. Logistic regression demonstrated whether ethnicity was rel
