Zika virus outbreak in 19 English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries and territories, 2015-2016.

Surveillance for Zika virus was enhanced in the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean following emergence of the virus in Brazil in May 2015. The first autochthonous case of Zika in the Caribbean was reported by Suriname in November 2015, and the virus subsequently spread rapidly throughout the region. Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) member states (CMS) reported clinically suspected cases of Zika and submitted serum specimens to the agency for laboratory investigation. A patient was considered a confirmed case if Zika virus was detected by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase cha

[Molecular epidemiology of rabies epizootics in Colombia, 1994-2002: evidence of human and canine rabies associated with chiroptera].

Three urban rabies outbreaks have been reported in Colombia during the last two decades, one of which is ongoing in the Caribbean region (northern Colombia). The earlier outbreaks occurred almost simultaneously in Arauca (eastern Colombia) and in the Central region, ending in 1997. Phylogenetic relationships among rabies viruses isolated from the three areas were based on a comparison of cDNA fragments coding for the endodomain of protein G and a fragment of L protein obtained by RT-PCR. The sequenced amplicons which included the G-L intergenic region contained 902 base pairs. Phylogenetic ana

Anticipating El Niño-related health risks in Latin America and the Caribbean: from climate information to public health preparedness.

El Niño is a recurrent mode of tropical Pacific climate variability with major public health implications for Latin America and the Caribbean. Its development is partly driven by the Bjerknes feedback, a coupled ocean-atmosphere process in which weakened equatorial trade winds reduce coastal upwelling and allow warm surface waters to shift eastward. Warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific can reshape regional rainfall and temperature patterns, increasing the likelihood of floods, droughts, wildfires, food-system disruption, and health-service interruption in locations with establis

Fibropapillomatosis Dynamics, Severity and Demographic Effect in Caribbean Green Turtles.

Habitat degradation induced by human activities can exacerbate the spread of wildlife disease and could hinder the recovery of imperiled species. The endangered green turtle Chelonia mydas is impacted worldwide by fibropapillomatosis (FP), a neoplastic infectious disease likely triggered by the Scutavirus chelonidalpha5 with coastal anthropogenic stressors acting as cofactors in disease development. Here, we studied fibropapillomatosis dynamics and its demographic consequences using an 11-year capture-mark-recapture dataset in Anse du Bourg d'Arlet/Chaudière (ABAC) and Grande Anse d'Arlet (GA)

Coming to the Caribbean: Eighty-five years of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) at Cayo Santiago-A rare nonhuman primate model for the studies of adaptation, diseases, genetics, natural disasters, and resilience.

The Cayo Santiago rhesus macaque colony represents one of the most important nonhuman primate resources since their introduction to the Caribbean area in 1938. The 85 years of continuing existence along with the comprehensive database of the rhesus colony and the derived skeletal collections have provided and will continue to provide a powerful tool to test hypotheses about adaptive and evolutionary mechanisms in both biology and medicine.

Habitat suitability, occurrence, and behavior of dwarf sperm whales (Kogia sima) off St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Eastern Caribbean.

The genus Kogia includes two species that are some of the least known cetacean species around the globe. Here, we investigated the occurrence, behavior, and habitat suitability of dwarf sperm whales (K. sima) off St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Eastern Caribbean). Small boat dedicated surveys were conducted during May and June of both 2022 and 2023 along the south and west coast of the island of St. Vincent. A total of 2260 km was surveyed and 33 sightings of dwarf sperm whale were recorded, which was also the most frequently sighted cetacean species (37.5% of all cetacean sightings). Group si

Benthic and fish community composition on mesophotic reefs in Grand Cayman.

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems (MCEs) represent unique ecological habitats that range from 30 to 150 m deep, harbouring phylogenetically distinct species and offering refuge for many taxa during times of environmental stress. Yet owing to inaccessibility of ecosystems at these depths, most MCEs remain unexplored, with quantifications of ecological communities in these habitats lacking across many regions. Here, using open- and closed-circuit technical diving, we quantified benthic and fish community composition at four mesophotic reef sites (45 m depth) in Grand Cayman. We show significant differ

Effects of sponge-to-sponge contact on the microbiomes of three spatially competing Caribbean coral reef species.

Sponges perform important ecosystem functions, host diverse microbial symbiont communities (microbiomes), and have been increasing in density on Caribbean coral reefs over the last decade. Sponges compete for space in coral reef communities through both morphological and allelopathic strategies, but no studies of microbiome impacts during these interactions have been conducted. Microbiome alterations mediate spatial competition in other coral reef invertebrates and may similarly impact competitive outcomes for sponges. In this study, we characterized the microbiomes of three common Caribbean s

[Sargassum enters the scene].

This work is written as a brief reflection that reviews the evolution of the biological phenomenon associated with the appearance of large masses of floating brown algae called sargassum, explores the social responses as well, perception in the media and in the tourism sector they derive as an impact of these upheavals. The entire Caribbean, and the area of Quintana Roo in Mexico, have experienced this kind of plant invasion, like a plague whose causes are unclear, but its effects on the beaches have caused a discredit to the landscape and therefore a discouragement to the bathers and visitors

Challenges in the control of neglected insect vector diseases of human importance in the Anglo-Caribbean.

INTRODUCTION: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in developing countries like the Caribbean, negatively affect multiple income-generating sectors, including the tourism industry upon which island states are highly dependent. Insect-transmitted NTDs include, but are not limited to, malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis. Control measures for these disease, are often ignored because of the associated cost. Many of the developing country members are thus retained in a financially crippling cycle, balancing the cost of prophylactic measures with that of controlling an outbreak. The purpose of the

A case of pseudotumorous pancreatitis that presented unique pancreatoscopic findings with the peroral electronic pancreatoscope.

BACKGROUND: Social accountability requires medical schools to align their education, research, and service activities with the community health needs. Although global models, such as the WHO framework and THEnet, provide clear guidance, the extent to which Caribbean offshore medical schools (OMS) incorporated these principles remains unclear. Given their significant contributions to the U.S. primary care workforce and their local economic impact, this study examines the social accountability across Caribbean OMS. METHODS: The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of accreditation standards

Substance use, mental disorders and physical health of Caribbeans at-home compared to those residing in the United States.

This study compares the health conditions of domestic Caribbeans with those living in the United States to explore how national context and migration experiences might influence substance use (i.e., alcohol or drug) and other mental and physical health conditions. The study is based upon probability samples of non-institutionalized Caribbeans living in the United States (1621), Jamaica (1216) and Guyana (2068) 18 years of age and over. Employing descriptive statistics and multivariate analytic procedures, the results revealed that substance use and other physical health conditions and major de
