Khat chewing, poly-substance use, and lower urinary tract symptoms: a cross-sectional analysis among Yemeni medical university students.

BACKGROUND: Khat (Catha edulis) chewing is highly prevalent in Yemen, but its potential urological effects are poorly characterized. The pharmacological action of its alkaloids on alpha-adrenergic receptors suggests a plausible link to voiding dysfunction. This study explored the association between khat chewing patterns, concurrent stimulant use, and lower urinary tract symptom (LUTS) severity. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 112 medical and paramedical university students from seven Yemeni governorates completed a structured digital questionnaire being recruited via convenience samp

Pharmacological risks of khat-oral antidiabetic drug interactions among patients at Gondar university referral hospital.

BACKGROUND: Khat (Catha edulis), a psychoactive plant commonly chewed in Ethiopia, is known to influence drug metabolism through its active compound, cathinone. Among patients with T2DM, concurrent khat chewing and OAD use may result in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions, particularly in polypharmacy contexts. Despite these concerns, the clinical relevance of khat-OAD interactions remains poorly understood in high-prevalence, low-resource settings. METHODS: This study assessed the prevalence, predictors, and perceptions of potential khat-OAD interactions among T2DM patients. A c

Effect of the khat alkaloid (+)norpseudoephedrine on uteroplacental blood flow in the guinea pig.

In order to investigate effects of khat chewing on uteroplacental blood flow (+)norpseudoephedrine (NPE) infusions were given to 11 anesthetized guinea pigs in late pregnancy (62-66 days) after unilateral uterine artery ligation at days 30-32. Regional blood flows were determined with radioactive microspheres. Mean arterial blood pressure increased with 25% and heart rate with 9% during NPE infusion. Myoendometrial blood flow was reduced by 31%. Placental vascular resistance (PVR) increased by 56% in the control horn (17 fetuses) and by 82% in the ligated horn (17 fetuses). This vasoconstricti

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis with no classical immunosuppression and the potential for Qat leaves chewing as an unidentified risk factor: a case report.

Gastrointestinal mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening invasive fungal infection that is often diagnosed late because of nonspecific clinical and endoscopic findings. Khat or Qat (Catha edulis) leaves may harbor environmental fungi, including Mucor species, and chronic chewing may contribute to gastrointestinal mucosal injury. However, a possible association between Qat use and gastrointestinal mucormycosis has not been established. We report a case of a 60-year-old man with diet-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus and long-standing Qat chewing who was admitted after an out-of-hospital card

Metabolic profile of N-ethylhexedrone, N-ethylpentedrone, and 4-chloromethcathinone in urine samples by UHPLC-QTOF-HRMS.

Forensic laboratories are constantly required to identify new drugs and their metabolites. N-ethylhexedrone (NEH, HEXEN), N-Ethylpentedrone (NEP), and 4-Chloromethcathinone (4-CMC, clephedrone) are synthetic substances structurally related to natural cathinone, alkaloid present in the leaves of the Catha edulis (Khat) plant. These synthetic cathinones (SC) are members of the heterogenous family of new psychoactive substances (NPS) that raised major concerns in scientific and forensic communities over the past years due to their widespread consumption. In this context, we investigated their met
