Central venous catheters (CVCs) are often used for various purposes in the emergency departments (ED). The main uses of CVCs in the EDs are emergent hemodialysis, in situations where peripheral vein catheterization cannot be achieved, and continuous invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The complications related to CVC insertion are usually mechanical and observed in the near term after the procedure. Retained CVC guidewire after catheterization is a rare complication in the published reports and usually related with intra- or postoperative settings and jugular or subclavian vein. The present study

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic apheresis has been used in treating hematological and non-hematological diseases. For a successful procedure, efficient vascular access is required. Presently, peripheral venous access (PVA), central venous catheterization (CVC), implantable ports, and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are used. This review aims to evaluate different type of access and their pros and cons to help physicians determine the best venous access.
METHODS: The electronic search included PubMed and Google Scholar up to November 2020. The Mesh terms were apheresis, peripheral catheterization, centr

UNLABELLED: Peripheral venous access devices are the most frequently inserted invasive devices in neonatal intensive care, yet fewer than half of them complete the therapy for which they were placed, and their mean dwell time is between 32 and 36 h. Despite this, they have attracted far less attention than central venous access devices: insertion and maintenance practices remain heterogeneous, rarely neonate-specific, and almost never standardized. This narrative review examines the current evidence on indications, device choice, insertion technique, securement, surveillance, and complications

Peripheral vascular access devices (PVADs) and their associated intravenous (IV) lines are widely used in clinical care. Securement devices are typically employed to prevent accidental dislodgement and complications such as occlusion and phlebitis. Despite the wide use of securement devices, there are no standardised methods for evaluating their actual ability to secure IV lines. This study assessed the securing ability of four commercially available IV line securement devices - Grip Lok, Javelo, micropore tape, and IV bracelet - under controlled laboratory conditions. First, all four devices

Arterial catheters (ACs) are essential devices widely used for hemodynamic monitoring and blood sampling. Whilst their infectious risk is well-known, the surveillance and identification of arterial catheter-related bloodstream infections (AC-CRBSI) remains underappreciated, and guidelines recommending best practices to prevent infection are few and inconsistent. Most evidence for AC infection prevention is inferred from studies focused on central venous catheter infection prevention. Few studies have directly explored optimal infection prevention strategies for ACs. For AC-CRBSI prevention, se

Peripheral Intravenous (IV) cannulation is a common clinical procedure conducted in most stroke patients during their hospital admission. IV access is crucial in the hyperacute and re-habilitation phases of stroke care for administering lifesaving treatments, conducting investi-gations, managing secondary risk factors and treating stroke related complications. Despite its importance, peripheral IV cannulation can cause several complications including infection, thrombosis, and pain. In stroke patients with motor and sensory impairments, cannulation poses unique challenges and can potentially h

Background and Objectives: Peripheral vascular access in infants is a frequent but technically challenging procedure due to the anatomical characteristics of this population. Repeated failed attempts may increase complications and emotional stress for both patients and healthcare professionals. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided peripheral vascular cannulation compared to the conventional or "blind" technique in infants. Materials and Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. The PubMed database was searc

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral intravenous catheter insertion is the most frequently performed invasive procedure in healthcare. Age-related physiological factors and chronic health conditions can influence how older people experience catheter-related complications, underscoring the need for clinical practices that address diverse needs. Although peripheral intravenous catheters are widely used in hospitalised populations, research specifically exploring their use, outcomes, and associated experiences in older people remains limited. This scoping review addresses this gap by mapping the available li

Radial artery access is a widely used approach due to its reduced bleeding risk. However, complications associated with radial access may occur, including dissection, perforation, occlusion, and bleeding with hematoma formation, which may lead to compartment syndrome. Equipment entrapment can occur due to the small caliber of the artery combined with spasm, and granuloma formation may arise from retained sheath material. Careful assessment of radial artery diameter and patency using ultrasound is highly recommended to minimize these risks. Employing proper access techniques, including adequate

Ultrasound (US) guidance has become an essential skill for peripheral intravenous (PIV) placement in children. It may be used as a primary approach or as a rescue technique after failed attempts, particularly in children with difficult intravenous access (DiVA). An increasing amount of literature shows the benefit of using US guidance for PIV placement in children with DiVA. With more consistent availability of US machines across many institutions, their use for PIV placement is becoming commonplace, with several types of clinicians performing the procedure. Novice proceduralists and those in

BACKGROUND: Medical adhesive-related skin injuries (MARSIs) are prevalent adverse effects associated with use of medical devices and increasingly recognized as potentially avoidable. Despite advances in preventive measures, MARSI events still occur, and individualized care must be designed to meet patient needs.
CASES: This article describes three cases where skin injuries occurred because of application, removal, and ongoing use of a medical adhesive device; all three cases occurred underneath dressings used to secure and protect the skin adjacent to a peripherally inserted central catheter

UNLABELLED: Introduction: The widespread adoption of the ANTT®Clinical Practice Framework as a single standard for aseptic technique, has highlighted that many clinical procedures do not require a sterile procedure pack to be performed safely and aseptically. This study explores the utilisation of a partially-sterile procedure pack that is specifically tailored to Standard-ANTT. Methods: A prospective project improvement evaluation, using a non-paired sample (pre: n=41; post: n =33) of emergency department staff in an NHS hospital. Staff were evaluated performing peripheral intravenous cannula

This article discusses the importance of effective skin antisepsis prior to the insertion of peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) and how best clinical practice is promoted by application of an appropriate method of skin disinfection integrated effectively with a proprietary aseptic non touch technique, or other standard aseptic technique. Historically under-reported, incidence of infection and risk to patients from PIVCs is now increasingly being recognised, with new research and evidence raising concern and helping to drive new clinical guidance and improvement. The risks posed by PIVCs

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is used for patients with refractory cardiopulmonary failure. Arterial cannulation by means of femoral arteries is fraught with potential complications. We present a technique for subclavian artery cannulation to provide a safe and durable means of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.
