Rat bite fever in a pet lover.

Rat-bite fever is an uncommon bacterial illness resulting from infection with Streptobacillus moniliformis that is often transmitted by the bite of a rat. The cutaneous findings in rat-bite fever are nonspecific but have been described as maculopapular or petechial. We describe a 9-year-old girl with acrally distributed hemorrhagic pustules, fever, and arthralgias. Diagnosis was delayed because of difficulty in identifying the pathologic organism. She was successfully treated with 10 days of ceftriaxone.

Plasma potassium may protect sodium pumps of toad hearts from an endogenous inhibitor.

Resibufogenin (3-hydroxy-14,15-epoxy-20,22-dienolide glycoside) is a potent sodium pump inhibitor present in toad toxin. It is present in the skin of the cane toad (Bufo marinus) at a concentration equivalent to ouabain of approximately 1 mM. Because toads, like other amphibians, have permeable skin, resibufogenin is also found in high concentrations in the blood. In the cane toad the blood concentration is estimated to be 1 microM (D. Residual cornea and the degenerate eye of the cryptophthalmic Typhlotriton spelaeus.

The cave-dwelling Typhlotriton spelaeus larvas live in daylight. The larvas undergo a metamorphosis when the thyroxin level (T3 and T4) increases. They leave aquatic life for terrestrial and subterranean aphotic life. The larval eyes are normal and show good vision response to tests. On the contrary, in the oldest larva and the adult, the eyes are small with poor vision or no vision at all. The lens can disappear but in any case the eyelids grow over the eye. The retinal degeneration takes place during and after metamorphosis. The admitted statement that "after metamorphosis . . . the developi

Responses of mitral/tufted cells to orthodromic and antidromic electrical stimulation in the olfactory bulb of the tiger salamander.

1. Responses evoked by electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve and olfactory tracts were analyzed in 46 output cells of the salamander olfactory bulb, in vivo. Labeling of several cells with horseradish peroxidase indicated that they were mitral and/or tufted neurons. The responses contained reproducible sequences of depolarizing and hyperpolarizing potentials, which changed with increases in stimulus intensity. 2. Stimulation of the nerve with intensities subthreshold for evoking spikes in the recorded cell resulted in a small depolarization followed by a period of hyperpolarization, du

Cytological changes induced by low temperature in the thyroid glands of larvae of the salamander Hynobius retardatus.

In order to study the environmental conditions and the endocrine mechanism which induce neotenous characteristics, the fine structure of the thyroid glands of larvae of the salamander Hynobius retardatus were examined. The thyroid glands of larvae exposed to a low temperature (4 degrees) were compared with those of larvae exposed to a higher temperature (20 degrees). At 4 degrees, the follicular lumen was large and its contents of low electron density; the epithelial cells were flat or cuboidal. In contrast, the 20 degrees larvae showed a small dense lumen and tall cylindrical epithelial cells

[Reptiles, the chief reservoir of Edwardsiella in nature].

The study of reptiles in the zoo has revealed the high level of Edwardsiella contamination in crocodiles (43%), snakes (36.4%), tortoises (23.6%) and, to a lesser extent, lizards (17.6%). All these reptiles are a natural source of Edwardsiella, and paleontological parallels, as well as the character of metabolic processes in Edwardsiella, allow referring them to the most ancient representatives of enterobacteria and date the appearance of these microorganisms from the beginning of the Mesosoic era and possibly from the end of the Paleosoic era.

Alternative Reproductive Tactic Frequencies Vary with Stream Size for an Appalachian Salamander.

AbstractSpatial variation in allele frequencies can provide clues about the mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of genetic polymorphisms. In some populations of two-lined salamanders, males exhibit two alternative reproductive tactics determined by a Y-linked genetic polymorphism: searching males locate and court females in terrestrial habitats, and guarding males defend mates at aquatic nesting sites. Here, we study the fine-scale spatial variation in the frequency of these tactics by genotyping >1,000 total larvae from five pairs of small and large stream reaches in the Appalachian Mo

Methylmercury Concentrations More Strongly Associated With Trait Variation Than Food Web Position in Plethodontid Salamanders.

Salamanders serve as bioindicators of mercury (Hg) in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats and are an important link in the food web between low-trophic prey and higher-trophic predators. We investigated the drivers of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure in three common plethodontid salamander species in New York State, USA, including comparisons among regions, habitat types (terrestrial and semiaquatic), and color morphs of Plethodon cinereus (striped and unstriped). Nonlethal tail samples were collected from one terrestrial species (P. cinereus) and two semiaquatic species (Eurycea bislineata and

Evolution of gigantism in amphiumid salamanders.

The Amphiumidae contains three species of elongate, permanently aquatic salamanders with four diminutive limbs that append one, two, or three toes. Two of the species, Amphiuma means and A. tridactylum, are among the largest salamanders in the world, reaching lengths of more than one meter, whereas the third species (A. pholeter), extinct amphiumids, and closely related salamander families are relatively small. Amphiuma means and A. tridactylum are widespread species and live in a wide range of lowland aquatic habitats on the Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States, whereas A. pholeter

Motilin in amphibians.

Motilin was first identified as a gastrointestinal (GI) motility-stimulating peptide and was later shown to mediate the gastric migrating motor complexes (MMCs) in several mammals. Motilin and its receptor have also been identified in non-mammalian vertebrates, including birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. This discovery has prompted comparative studies on its physiological roles in GI motility. This review focused on amphibian motilin and its role in GI contractions. Like those of mammals, birds, and reptiles, amphibian motilin is a 22-amino-acid peptide produced in the mucosa of the upper

Cloning of Hynobius lichenatus (Tohoku hynobiid salamander) p53 and analysis of its expression in response to radiation.

BACKGROUND: Caudata species such as salamanders are easily affected by environmental changes, which can drastically reduce their population. The effects of acute X-rays and chronic γ-irradiation on Hynobius lichenatus, the Japanese Tohoku hynobiid salamander, are known. However, the expression of radiation-inducible genes, such as the DNA-damage checkpoint response gene p53, has not been analyzed in H. lichenatus. This has not occurred because there is no established method for mRNA quantification in H. lichenatus due to a lack of information on available nucleotide sequences corresponding to

Homeotic transformations and number changes in the vertebral column of Triturus newts.

We explored intraspecific variation in vertebral formulae, more specifically the variation in the number of thoracic vertebrae and frequencies of transitional sacral vertebrae in Triturus newts (Caudata: Salamandridae). Within salamandrid salamanders this monophyletic group shows the highest disparity in the number of thoracic vertebrae and considerable intraspecific variation in the number of thoracic vertebrae. Triturus species also differ in their ecological preferences, from predominantly terrestrial to largely aquatic. Following Geoffroy St. Hilaire's and Darwin's rule which states that s

Identification and characterization of the HSP gene family in the Chinese giant salamander: Expression patterns under combined environmental stress.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) is a critically endangered living fossil species that is highly sensitive to changes in water temperature. However, systematic studies on the heat shock protein (HSP) gene family and its response mechanisms to environmental stress in this species remain limited. This study utilized transcriptome data from captive-bred salamanders exposed to combined temperature and pathogen stress. Bioinformatics tools were employed to identify the HSP gene family of A. davidianus (AndHSP) and to analyze their evolution, structure, and function, the

Numerical variations and spontaneous malformations in the early embryos of the Korean salamander, Hynobius leechii, in the farmlands of Korea.

Embryo sacs of the Korean salamander, Hynobius leechii, were collected from nine farmlands in Gyeongsangnam-Do, Korea, in early spring of 2002 and 2004. The variations in the number of embryos within each embryo sac and the mortality and abnormality rates among the embryos were investigated. We also analyzed the patterns of spontaneous embryonic malformations and the residual chemicals in the soil of the habitats using multiple-residue GC/MS. A total of 79,195 embryos were obtained from 1933 embryo sacs. There were regional variations in the length of individual embryo sacs and the number of e

Resistance of retinal extracellular space to Ca2+ level decrease: implications for the synaptic effects of divalent cations.

Ion-sensitive microelectrodes were used to measure the variations of [Ca2+]o induced by application of low Ca2+ media in the superfused eyecup preparation of the Pseudemys turtle. The aim of the experiments was to evaluate the possibility, suggested by previous studies, that in the deep, sclerad, layers of the retina [Ca2+]o may remain high enough to sustain chemical synaptic transmission even after prolonged application of low-Ca2+ saline. It was found that, at depths of 100-200 micron from the vitreal surface, [Ca2+ ]o did not fall below 1 mM even after application for periods of 30-60 min o
