Natural killer (NK) cells represent a major subpopulation of lymphocytes. These cells have effector functions as they recognize and kill transformed cells as well as microbially infected cells. In addition, alloreactive NK cells have been successfully used to treat patients with acute myeloid leukemia and other hematological malignancies. NK cells are also endowed with immunoregulatory functions since they secrete cytokines such as IFN-γ, which favor the development of T helper 1 (Th1) cells, and chemokines such as CCL3/MIP-1α and CCL4/MIP-1β, which recruit various inflammatory cells into site

Various intracellular organelles, such as lysosomes, mitochondria, nuclei, and cytoskeletons, change during replicative senescence, but the utility of these changes as general markers of senescence and their significance with respect to functional alterations have not been comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, the relevance of these alterations to cellular and functional changes in aging animals is poorly understood. In this paper, we review the studies that report these senescence-associated changes in various aging cells and their underlying mechanisms. Changes associated with lysosomes and

Gaucher disease (GD) is the most common lysosomal storage disorder and is caused by inherited deficiencies of glucocerebrosidase, the enzyme responsible for the lysosomal breakdown of the lipid glucosylceramide. GD is characterized by the accumulation of pathological, lipid laden macrophages, so-called Gaucher cells. Following the development of enzyme replacement therapy for GD, the search for suitable surrogate disease markers resulted in the identification of a thousand-fold increased chitinase activity in plasma from symptomatic Gaucher patients and that decreases upon successful therapeut

The aim of this study was to reconstruct dynamic biological steps of human atherosclerosis at different ages of life and, in particular, to clarify the role of the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) by means of evaluation of several markers implicated in proliferative diseases (c-fos, proliferating cell nuclear antigen: PCNA, apoptosis, chromosome 7). We examined the biological features of 67 atherosclerotic arterial lesions obtained from fetuses, infants, young people and adults. From each case serial sections were stained for histological examination, PCNA, c-fos and apoptosis detection by immunohis

Stem cell populations are found in most adult tissues and, in general, their differentiation potential may reflect the local cell population. Hematopoietic, epidermal, mesenchymal, neural and hepatic stem cells have been described. It may be that, in the adult, these cells are the reservoirs of reparative cells that are mobilized following injury and migrate to the wound site where, in cooperation with local cells, they participate in the repair response. Mesenchymal stem cells, isolated from the bone marrow, have the capacity to differentiate into cells of connective tissues. Some striking ex

Biology of kidney cells can be used as a model for further understanding of ontogeny-recapitulating phylogeny. The common and species-specific structural and functional relationship between blood capillaries and the environment via a filtration barrier of nephrons is a biological phenomenon resulting from renal cell memory acquired through evolution. Genetically programmed development, a subsequent series of gene expression, and inductive interactions played a key role in differentiation and maintenance of specific activities of kidneys in birds and mammals. Various environmental factors may a

The biology and the genetics of Hürthle cell tumors are reviewed starting from the characterization and differential diagnosis of the numerous benign and malignant, neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions of the thyroid in which Hürthle cell transformation is frequently observed. The clinicopathologic and molecular evidence obtained from the comparative study of the aforementioned conditions indicate that Hürthle cell appearance represents a phenotype that is superimposed on the genotypic and conventional histopathologic features of the tumors. Hürthle cell tumors differ from their non-Hürthle co

Nearly 50 years have lapsed since the tight junction between epithelial cells was first identified by electron microscopy. The tight junction was once viewed as a static structure providing a barrier to paracellular movement and restricting proteins to the apical or basolateral membrane. Recent insights into the molecular composition of tight junctions reveal surprising complexity and dynamic regulation. Epithelia along the nephron exemplify a diversity of tight junctions that contribute to more than a 100-fold difference in permeability from the proximal tubule to the collecting duct. Tight j

The cell biological phenomenon of autophagy (or ;self-eating') has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this review, we first address the cell biological functions of autophagy, and then discuss recent insights into the role of autophagy in animal development, particularly in C. elegans, Drosophila and mouse. Work in these and other model systems has also provided evidence for the involvement of autophagy in disease processes, such as neurodegeneration, tumorigenesis, pathogenic infection and aging. Insights gained from investigating the functions of autophagy in normal developme

Bone development and remodeling depend on complex interactions between bone-forming osteoblasts, bone-degrading osteoclasts, and other cells present within the bone microenvironment. Balanced control of bone formative and degradative processes is normally carefully maintained in the adult skeleton but becomes uncoupled in the course of aging or in various pathological disease states. Systemic regulators of bone metabolism and local mediators, including matrix molecules, cytokines, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and other autocrine or paracrine factors, regulate the recruitment, differentiation,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although populations of rare HIV-infected CD4 T cells that persist under antiretroviral therapy (ART) are believed to be a major barrier to HIV cure, technical obstacles have made it impossible to determine whether these cells possess distinctive attributes that enable their persistence. Here we review the development of technologies that have begun to allow HIV-infected cells in their natural state to be described comprehensively.
RECENT FINDINGS: As widely used platforms that analyze single-cells within water-in-oil droplets have yielded information about HIV-infected CD4

Cell refractive index is a key biophysical parameter, which has been extensively studied. It is correlated with other cell biophysical properties including mechanical, electrical and optical properties, and not only represents the intracellular mass and concentration of a cell, but also provides important insight for various biological models. Measurement techniques developed earlier only measure the effective refractive index of a cell or a cell suspension, providing only limited information on cell refractive index and hence hindering its in-depth analysis and correlation. Recently, the emer

With the growth of clinical cancer single-cell RNA sequencing studies, robust differential expression methods for case/control analyses (e.g., treatment responders vs. non-responders) using gene signatures are pivotal to nominate hypotheses for further investigation. However, many commonly used methods produce a large number of false positives, do not adequately represent the patient-specific hierarchical structure of clinical single-cell RNA sequencing data, or account for sample-driven confounders. Here, we present a nonparametric statistical method, BEANIE, for differential expression of ge

Heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria (order Nostocales) are a monophyletic group of organisms that grow as filaments usually made of dozens to hundreds of cells (termed vegetative cells) that can perform oxygenic photosynthesis. Under combined nitrogen deficiency, some cells in the filament differentiate into N2-fixing heterocysts, which do not produce oxygen and, indeed, keep a microoxic environment appropriate for the expression and functioning of the N2-fixing enzyme, nitrogenase. Thus, in the diazotrophic filament, oxygenic photosynthesis and N2 fixation are segregated into two different cell

Peroxisomes are highly specialized organelles that are important for various metabolic functions, including β-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids and the synthesis of plasmalogens. Mutations in peroxisomal biogenesis proteins cause Zellweger spectrum disorders (ZSD), rare multisystem disorders often associated with neurological phenotypes. Unlike other peroxisome biogenesis proteins, PEX11β regulates peroxisomal fission, and PEX11β mutations result in milder metabolic phenotypes but persistent neurodevelopmental abnormalities, suggesting a role for PEX11β in neurodevelopment. To model PEX

Cell Structure and Function (CSF), the official journal of the Japan Society for Cell Biology (JSCB), celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025. This essay traces the scientific evolution of CSF from its founding in 1975 to the present, drawing on bibliometric data retrieved from OpenAlex at ten-year intervals. Over five decades, CSF published 1,737 articles, with the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) showing a consistent upward trend, even as total output declined following the journal's shift to electronic publication in 2005. A decade-by-decade analysis of the five most-cited articles rev

Methanol, a renewable non-food C1 substrate, holds great promise as a feedstock for sustainable biomanufacturing and carbon neutral production. However, its industrial application is hindered by low methanol assimilation efficiency in most microbes. Recent advances in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering have enabled the development of methylotrophic microbial cell factories through strategies including building efficient methanol-utilizing pathways, engineering methanol dehydrogenase for enhanced oxidation efficiency, and optimizing redox balance via cofactor utilization. Additionally,

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) protein has centered on its role as a transmembrane receptor in professional innate immune cells, mediating type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling. However, recent advancements have significantly revealed its marked expression and functional importance in adaptive immune cells, particularly CD4+ T lymphocytes. STING signaling intersects with crucial T cell pathways, influencing development, activation, survival, and differentiation. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the dynamic regulation and multifaceted roles of STING in CD4+ T cell biology.
