Cytomorphometric characterization of NHL(non-Hodgkin's lymphomas) of low and high grade malignancy.

From semithin sections of 12 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (3 lymphocytic, 3 centrocytic, 3 lymphoblastic, 3 centroblastic m.L.) morphometric parameters of nucleus and cytoplasm, including size, shape, roundness, number and size of nucleoli were measured. Statistical evaluation of the data showed that the lymphoma cells mainly differ in their size, less in their shape. Nucleolar parameters are of greater value than contour features in discriminating the four groups of NHL. With growing grade of malignancy an increasing nuclear and cellular polymorphism was observed. Moreover, measurement of the feat

The Golgi apparatus of goblet cells in the mouse descending colon: three-dimensional visualization using a confocal laser scanning microscope.

The three-dimensional structure of the Golgi apparatus was studied in goblet cells in lectin-stained sections of the mouse descending colon by using a confocal laser scanning microscope. In the lower part of the crypt, the Golgi apparatus formed a dome- or globe-like structure in the supranuclear region. The wall of the dome had some holes, one of which usually faced toward the nucleus and others toward the apical cytoplasm. Mucous granules seemed to be initially released into the interior of the dome and transported toward the apical cytoplasm through the holes. In the upper part of the crypt

Calcium binding protein immunoreactivity in nucleus rotundus in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Nucleus rotundus is a prominent nucleus in the dorsal thalamus of nonmammalian amniotes. In one group of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, previous studies have identified three parts of this neuronal aggregate. The central portion, the rotundal core, which receives visual input from the midbrain and projects to a restricted portion of the telencephalon, contains relay cells only. Previous examinations using Nissl morphology indicated that neurons of the rotundal core were not a homogeneous population of cells. The present investigation utilized another methodology to examine cell populations withi

Choroid plexus papilloma and giant cell glioblastoma induced in hamsters with bovine adenovirus type 3.

Newborn hamsters were inoculated with 0.02 ml of bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAV 3) having a titer of 10(4.5)TCID50/0.1 ml. Of 82 hamsters observed over 40 days after viral inoculation, 15 developed choroid plexus papilloma after a latency period of 41-228 days and six developed giant cell glioblastoma after a latency period of 66-214 days. Multiple foci of abnormal cell growth were also observed in the meninges and choroid plexus. Choroid plexus papilloma developed in the ventricles occupying the ventricular cavity and histologically showed a radiating arrangement of spindle-shaped cells formin

A CNN-GNN Approach for Polarity Vectors Prediction in 3D Microscopy Images.

The polarity between nuclei and Golgi is an important aspect of cellular division, migration and signaling. For example, nucleus-Golgi polarity significantly impacts angiogenesis, the physiological process in which new blood vessels develop from pre-existing vessels. Therefore, estimating polarity between nuclei and Golgi is crucial to understanding complex cellular mechanisms.Previous approaches for the prediction of nucleus-Golgi polarity vectors use simple versions of bipartite matching algorithms. These methods, while effective, fail to consider other important interactions between nuclei

Nuclear damage in LMNA mutant iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes is associated with impaired lamin localization to the nuclear envelope.

The LMNA gene encodes the nuclear envelope proteins Lamins A and C, which comprise a major part of the nuclear lamina, provide mechanical support to the nucleus, and participate in diverse intracellular signaling. LMNA mutations give rise to a collection of diseases called laminopathies, including dilated cardiomyopathy (LMNA-DCM) and muscular dystrophies. Although nuclear deformities are a hallmark of LMNA-DCM, the role of nuclear abnormalities in the pathogenesis of LMNA-DCM remains incompletely understood. Using induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) from LMNA mutan

Time disparity sensitive behavior and its neural substrates of a pulse-type gymnotiform electric fish, Brachyhypopomus gauderio.

Roles of the time coding electrosensory system in the novelty responses of a pulse-type gymnotiform electric fish, Brachyhypopomus, were examined behaviorally, physiologically, and anatomically. Brachyhypopomus responded with the novelty responses to small changes (100 μs) in time difference between electrosensory stimulus pulses applied to different parts of the body, as long as these pulses were given within a time period of ~500 μs. Physiological recording revealed neurons in the hindbrain and midbrain that fire action potentials time-locked to stimulus pulses with short latency (500-900 μs

[Neuroendocrine carcinoma with significantly vacuolar nucleus at the esophagogastric junction: A case report].

Neoplasms characterized by the expression of markers of neuroendocrine differentiation in neoplastic cells are defined as neuroendocrine neoplasms. A case of neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) with a small amount of papillary adenocarcinoma and significantly vacuolar nucleus at the esophagogastric junction was reported in this article. A 77-year-old male had dysphagia for one week. Endoscopy revealed early-stage esophagogastric junction carcinoma, and biopsy was diagnosed as poorly differentiated carcinoma. Endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed. Histologically, the papillary adenocarcin

Intraventricular neuroblastoma. A light and electron microscopic study and review of the literature.

The neuroblastoma can generally be diagnosed from the histologic findings, but electron microscopic evidence is often required. A neuroblastoma occurring in the lateral ventricle of a 17-year-old female is described in this report. The tumor cells, which were strongly stained with hematoxylin, contained a small round or oval nucleus with scant cytoplasm and an obscure cell border as observed by light microscopy. No calcification, mitoses and typical ganglion cells were detected. An electron microscopic examination disclosed dense-cored vesicles, cell processes, clear vesicles, dumbbell-shaped

Development of catecholaminergic neurons in the human medulla oblongata.

Distribution and maturation of catecholaminergic (CA) neurons have been studied by tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in the medulla oblongata of human fetuses aged 14.5-25 weeks of gestation. Already at 14.5 weeks, CA neurons were observed in two longitudinally oriented cell clusters, one located ventrolaterally in the area of the lateral reticular and ambiguous nuclei, the other one dorsomedially forming 4 groups related to the dorsal vagal nucleus, the commissural nucleus of the vagus, the nucleus of the tractus solitarius and the area postrema. CA neurons in the area postrema were o

TGFβ signaling reinforces pericyte properties of the non-endocrine mouse pituitary cell line TtT/GF.

The non-endocrine TtT/GF mouse pituitary cell line was derived from radiothyroidectomy-induced pituitary adenoma. In addition to morphological characteristics, because the cells are S100β-positive, they have been accepted as a model of folliculostellate cells. However, our recent microarray analysis indicated that, in contrast to folliculostellate cells, TtT/GF cells might not be terminally differentiated, as they share some properties with stem/progenitor cells, vascular endothelial cells and pericytes. The present study investigates whether transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) can elicit f

Cytodifferentiation of pinealocytes (I and II) and astrocyte types of mature male sheep epiphysis cerebri with special emphasis on the presence of neuronal and pigmented-like cells.

BACKGROUND: The epiphysis cerebri (pineal gland) is a small-sized, photo neuroendocrine organ in the brain of most vertebrates. Their effect is through secretion of melatonin, a serotonin-derived hormone which is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light and modulates the circadian rhythm; light and dark cycle like a biological clock, sleep patterns (sleep-wake cycle), and sexual development. AIM: This study aimed to identify and differentiate the different cell types filling the pineal gland parenchyma of mature male sheep. METHODS: Pineal glands were collected and sliced parasagitally

Pulmonary Capillary Confinement Shapes A Motile Anuclear Neutrophil State.

The nucleus is a major mechanical constraint for cells moving through confined spaces, but how organ-specific physical environments shape nuclear state and cell behavior in vivo remains unclear. Using quantitative intravital imaging with submicron stabilization of the breathing lung, we tracked neutrophil deformation, Ca2+ dynamics, nuclear state and motility over time. In inflamed pulmonary capillaries, neutrophil deformation was temporally coupled to transient Ca2+ increases, and this coupling was reduced by the mechanosensitive-channel inhibitor GsMTx4. We identified abundant neutrophil-der

Quantitative evaluation of monocyte differentiation by electron microscopy: impairment of differentiation ability in monocytes from children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

The differentiation of monocytes was evaluated quantitatively by electron microscopy and was analyzed in relation to the clinical features of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The monocyte cellular size increased and cell organellae became mature after a 72-h culture. Phagolysosome formation developed markedly- and the nucleus became circular--accompanied by chromatin deconcentration. The differentiation degree of the cell organellae was indexed and classified as mature by electron microscopy. The indexes of nuclear shape, chromatin deconcentration, cytoplasmonuclear ratio and vac

Reconstructed three-dimensional images of flow-sorted nuclei hybridized with chromosome-specific probes.

We demonstrated that the three-dimensional (3-D) locational and morphological differences of chromosome 17 are dependent on each cell cycle phase in the clinical materials. Cell suspensions prepared from hypertrophied tonsil were hybridized with chromosome 17 whole painting probe or its centromeric probe and the probes were detected with fluorescein isothiocyanate. Then the cells were sorted from G(0+1), S-, and G(2+M)-phase fractions by flow cytometry and observed by confocal laser scanning microscopy to obtain the serial optical sections. The 3-D images were obtained by assembling these sect

A morphologic and morphometric study of cells from colloid carcinoma of the breast obtained by fine needle aspiration. Distinction from other breast lesions.

Morphologic and morphometric studies were carried out on eight cases of pure and mixed colloid carcinoma of the breast initially diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Key morphologic features included (1) cellular smears, (2) single cells, loose aggregates and cohesive groups of cells bathed in a mucinous background, (3) single cells displaying nuclear eccentricity and (4) little variation in nuclear size or shape, with bland-to-accentuated chromatin and rare nucleoli. These morphologic features are compared with those observed in pregnancy adenoma, lobular carcinoma, fibroadenoma, ductal

The neurons of the medial geniculate body in the mustached bat (Pteronotus parnellii).

The neurons in the medial geniculate body were studied in Golgi preparations from adult mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii). Their somatic and dendritic configurations were compared with those of cells in other, nonecholocating mammals. A second goal was to use the thalamic nuclear subdivisions derived from Golgi material to integrate the findings in parallel studies of cytoarchitecture, immunocytochemistry, and tectothalamic connections. Three primary divisions are defined. The ventral division is large and has a stereotyped neuronal organization. Medium-sized perikarya (about 10 microns in
