Evaluation of the Cellular Dissociation Grading, Based on Tumor Budding and Cell Nest Size, in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Penis.

The "Cellular Dissociation Grade" (CDG) is based on tumor cell budding and cell nest size. Many studies have examined the CDG in squamous cell carcinomas of other organs such as the lungs, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, cervix and esophagus. In this study, the CDG was examined in 109 cases of invasive penile squamous cell carcinoma that were treated at the University Medicine Rostock between 2014 and 2022. Furthermore, its correlation with the pathologic status of regional lymph nodes (pN) as the main prognostic factor was verified. Finally, cellular dissociation grading was compared with class

Lack of correlation of lymphoblast cell size with presence of T-cell markers or with outcome in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

The proportion of pretreatment bone marrow macrolymphoblasts was determined in a total of 93 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in order to assess the validity of cell size as a prognostic indicator. A macrolymphoblast (MLb) was defined as having a diameter greater than 12 mum, and patient samples were divided simply on the basis of whether they had more or less than 10% MLb present at diagnosis. In a retrospective study of a sample of 47 children treated according to Total Therapy Study VII, the continuous complete remission duration, survival and incidence of CNS disease bore

The community patterns and assembly mechanism varied in eukaryotic microorganisms with different cell sizes.

Cell size is a fundamental determinant of eukaryotic microorganisms' ecology, influencing community dynamics, physiological processes, and ecological interactions. However, it is still unclear whether eukaryotic microorganisms of different size have similar structural and assembly mechanisms. In this study, we sorted eukaryotic microorganisms' cells into two sizes classes (large-sized eukaryotic microorganisms (LE) and small-sized eukaryotic microorganisms (SE)) and compared their structural and assembly mechanisms along the Han River. The results showed that LE fractions had higher diversity

Size of lipid emulsion droplets influences metabolism in human CD4+ T cells.

SCOPE: Triglyceride-based lipid emulsions are critical for total parenteral nutrition (TPN), but their long-term use has adverse effects, such as severe liver dysfunction necessitating improved formulations. This study compares the uptake mechanism and intracellular fate of novel glycerol-stabilized nano-sized lipid emulsions with conventional emulsions in CD4+ T cells, focusing on their impact on cellular metabolism. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nanoemulsions were formulated with increased glycerol content. Uptake of emulsions in primary human CD4+ T cells was investigated using different endocytic

Adipose-derived Stem Cells: Potentials, Availability and Market Size in Regenerative Medicine.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have been described as one of the most potent and accessible human adult stem cells which can be utilized in various therapeutic approaches. Due to the wide variety of cytokines and GFs secreted by them, ADSCs can be used for controlled drug release. These cells can be used for proliferation and differentiation of tissues regardless of survival conditions and immunologic problems. Because of their ability to differentiate into various lineages, ADSCs can be used in musculoskeletal problems, diabetes, heart diseases, obesity, neurologic and nephrogenic disease

Isolation and characterization of circulating melanoma cells by size filtration and fluorescent in-situ hybridization.

Isolation of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood of melanoma patients has been difficult owing to inconsistent expression of surface antigens. Here we report on the isolation, detection, and characterization of CTCs from blood of melanoma patients using microfiltration and fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH). Two tubes of blood from 15 patients with advanced melanoma were collected. These two tubes subsequently underwent filtration through a membrane with pore sizes of 7.5 μm. Isolated cells from one tube were analyzed by FISH for RREB1 (6p24), MYB (6q32), SE6 (D6Z1), and CCND1 (11q

The influence of the size and aspect ratio of anisotropic, porous CaCO3 particles on their uptake by cells.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports highlighting the role of particle geometry have suggested that anisotropy can affect the rate and the pathway of particle uptake by cells. Therefore, we investigate the internalization by cells of porous calcium carbonate particles with different shapes and anisotropies. RESULTS: We report here on a new method of the synthesis of polyelectrolyte coated calcium carbonate particles whose geometry was controlled by varying the mixing speed and time, pH value of the reaction solution, and ratio of the interacting salts used for particle formation. Uptake of spherical, c

Effects of phytoplankton cell size and chloride concentration on the bioaccumulation of methylmercury in marine phytoplankton.

In the current study, the effects of phytoplankton cell size and methylmercury (MeHg) speciation on the bioaccumulation of MeHg by marine phytoplankton were investigated. Volume concentration factors (VCFs) of MeHg were determined in relation to the surface area to volume ratio of the cells for four species of diatom and a cyanobacteria species cultured in unenriched seawater. The VCFs of MeHg, ranging from 7.3 × 10(4) to 1.6 × 10(6) , increased linearly as the cell surface area-to-volume ratio increased. It suggests that pico- and nano-dominated phytoplankton communities may lead to larger Me

Histologic prognostic factors for small-sized squamous cell carcinomas of the peripheral lung.

OBJECTIVE: Although the incidence of peripheral squamous cell carcinomas (SqCCs) of the lung has increased over recent years, histologic prognostic factors for small peripheral SqCCs have not been well established. The aim of this study is to identify clinicopathologic prognostic factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated various clinicopathologic parameters in 101 patients with peripheral lung SqCCs (defined as tumors located in or more peripheral to the fourth branching bronchus), measuring < or = 30 mm in diameter. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed that the size of the minimal tumor

Fruit weight regulation by a paralog of Cell Size Regulator (CSR) in tomato and other crops.

A paralog of Cell Size Regulator (CSR), CSR-like1, underlies the novel fw6.2 QTL in tomato. The gene and locus regulate fruit weight by increasing pericarp cell size and its function on fruit weight appears to be conserved in other crops. Fruit weight is a quantitative trait that was under strong selection during the domestication of fruit and vegetable crops such as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). While numerous fruit weight QTLs have been identified, only three tomato fruit weight genes have been cloned. In this study, we utilized a genetically diverse tomato panel, the Varitome collection, t

OsDUF3615 regulates grain size and quality traits by modulating cell proliferation and starch metabolism in rice.

Domains of Unknown Function (DUFs) are widely distributed across diverse genomes and are increasingly recognized as important regulators of plant growth, development, and stress responses. DUF3615 is a highly conserved plant-specific protein motif; however, its biological function remains largely unknown. Previously, the gene OsGAPC3, a key regulator of grain quality, was isolated and functionally characterized in rice. Transcriptome analysis during the dissection of the OsGAPC3-mediated regulatory pathway revealed that OsDUF3615 is significantly upregulated in Osgapc3 mutants, suggesting its

Influence of Cell Size Changes after Irradiation on Reliability of an Impedance Measurement-based Hematology Analyzer.

Radiological nuclear scenarios remain a persistent threat due to civil use and military possession of radiation sources. Therefore, it is crucial to be prepared for events involving a large number of patients exposed to radiation. In such cases, it is important to quickly and simply predict whether potential patients will develop severe, mild, or no Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS). To address this challenge, the Bundeswehr Institute of Radiobiology developed the H-module, a prediction module that estimates the severity of ARS based on peripheral blood cell counts in the context of an exposure e

Size-Dependent Neutralization Efficacy of Nanodecoys Against SARS-CoV-2 Mimics in Mammalian Cell Infection Models.

Nanodecoys that competitively inhibit viral entry represent a promising antiviral strategy, yet the influence of their physical properties on performance remains underexplored. In this work, we systematically investigate the size-dependent antiviral activity of ACE2-conjugated nanodecoys against a safe SARS-CoV-2 mimic. Our results demonstrate that the inhibition of mimic cellular uptake is highly size-dependent. The 10 nm nanodecoys exhibited the most potent neutralization, followed by the comparable 5 and 20 nm, while the 50 and 100 nm nanodecoys demonstrated similar, lower efficacies. This

Cell size explains shift in phytoplankton community structure following storm-induced changes in light and nutrients.

Understanding the mechanisms driving community structure and dynamics is crucial in the face of escalating climate change, including increasing incidences of extreme weather. Cell size is a master trait of small organisms that is subject to a trade-off between resistance to grazing and competition for resources, and thus holds potential to explain and predict community dynamics in response to disturbances. Here, we aimed at determining whether cell size can explain shifts in phytoplankton communities following changes in nutrient and light conditions resulting from storm-induced inputs of nutr

Squamate ventricular cardiomyocytes: Ploidy, proliferation, and heart muscle cell size in the leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius).

BACKGROUND: While heart function is broadly conserved across vertebrates, the cellular phenotype of muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) varies across taxa and throughout ontogeny. Emerging evidence suggests that some attributes may correlate with the capacity for spontaneous cardiomyocyte replacement following injury. For example, among non-regenerating taxa like adult mammals and birds, cardiomyocytes are polyploid, rarely proliferate, and are large in size. In contrast, in regeneration-competent zebrafish and amphibians, cardiomyocytes are diploid, spontaneously proliferate, and are comparatively

Pathological T3 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer with satellite nodules: Number or size, what does matter?

BACKGROUND: Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) with intralobar satellite nodule are defined as T3 (T3SN). We investigated the main features of these tumors and analyzed their impact on Overall Survival (OS). METHODS: This was a retrospective multicentric study including all pT3SN NSCLC operated on between 2005 and 2020, excluding patients with multifocal ground-glass opacities; who received induction therapies; N3 or stage IV. The diameter of largest (LgN) and smallest nodule (SmN), the total diameter (sum of diameter of all nodules, TS), and the number of SN were measured. RESULTS: Among 10

Dapagliflozin induces vasodilation in resistance-size mesenteric arteries by stimulating smooth muscle cell KV7 ion channels.

Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that, in addition to glucose reduction, lowers systemic blood pressure. Here, we investigated if dapagliflozin could directly relax small mesenteric arteries that control peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure, and the underlying molecular mechanism. We used pressurized arterial myography, pharmacological inhibition and Western blotting to investigate the direct effect of dapagliflozin on the contractility of freshly isolated, resistance-size rat mesenteric arteries. Our pressure myography data unveiled that dapagli

Effect of formalin fixation on tumor size determination in stage I non-small cell lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Tumor size is an important prognostic factor in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system does not mandate a specific measurement method. Moreover, measuring fresh specimens and formalin-fixed specimens may yield disparate results. Our goal was to evaluate this disparity for stage I NSCLC. METHODS: We enrolled 401 patients with stage I NSCLC who underwent surgical interventions and follow-up in our hospital between 1993 and 2002. Tumors invading visceral pleura, involving the main bronchus, or associated with atelectasis or obstr
