Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is a potential cause of craniofacial deformity. If TMJ OA appears during orthodontic treatment, the mandible usually rotates posteriorly, resulting in an unsatisfactory profile, especially in patients with pre-treatment mandibular retrusion. Although it is important to confirm the kind of TMJ pathosis at the start of orthodontic treatment, the relationship between TMJ OA, condylar remodelling and changes in craniofacial morphology remains unclear because of a lack of longitudinal studies. Elucidating this relationship might allow better predict

BACKGROUND: Although the importance of facial photography in orthodontics has been recognized, there is only one study on its validity and absolutely no studies on its diagnostic value. This study was conducted, therefore, to evaluate for the first time the diagnostic merit of photography in detecting growth pattern and jaw relationships.
METHODS: Standardized lateral cephalographs and profile photographs were taken from 54 girls and 26 boys. On cephalometry, growth pattern (normal, horizontal, and vertical) and horizontal bimaxillary classification (Classes I to III) were determined. Using p

Traditional cephalometry with a cast-mounted articulator is a useful and well-established tool for orthognathic surgery 7 planning. However, 2-D planning with dental casts cannot provide 8 comprehensive information on facial bone conditions, especially 9 with regards to symmetry. To plan and predict postsurgical facial 10 symmetry and occlusions, this paper uses an optical navigation system to track the movement of the upper and lower dental models 12 in model surgery. The corresponding movement and the new position of the jawbones are demonstrated in the computer and the 14 symmetry status ca

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the significance of 3-dimensional (3-D) CT for preoperative measurement and postoperative assessment in craniosynostosis.
METHODS: 17 cases with craniosynostosis underwent 3-D CT reconstruction. The 3-D images were used to perform cephalometry. The cases included brachycephalic, caphocephalia, plagiocephaly. The CVAI must be measured for plagiocephaly. Measurement results were compared before and after operation in 9 cases.
RESULTS: The bone segments were advanced 1.5 - 3 cm in brachycephalic, retruded 2 - 4 cm in scaphocephalic, moved back and forth about 2 cm in p

The antero-posterior diameter of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) at the level of the soft palate and base of the tongue was assessed in age-matched females with a normal mandible (n=31), mandibular retrognathism (n=30) or mandibular prognathism (n=38). All subjects were examined by lateral cephalometry. Measured variables were corrected with the use of appropriate regression equations to eliminate the effects of head posture on the PAS. The corrected data showed more clear-cut differences in the PAS among the three groups than did the measured data. Pharyngeal airway diameter was largest in

Craniofacial parameters were studied clinically and by cephalometry in 11 trigonocephalic patients from infancy to 4 years of age. Six of the most severe patients had surgery between 6 and 18 months of age. Analysis of morphology indicated that bony interorbital distance was reduced in patients selected for surgery and hypotelorism persisted at final examination. All patients demonstrated orbital width measurements above the mean for the norm, while orbital height was essentially normal. All but one of the patients had a variably prominent forehead bony ridge that was eliminated or reduced as

Immobilization of the coronal suture was produced unilaterally in 9-day-old rabbits to determine its effect on subsequent craniofacial development. The suture was immobilized unilaterally by the topical application of methylcyanoacrylate adhesive. Subsequent growth effects on the cranial vault, base, and facial skeleton were assessed by serial radiographic cephalometry. Unilateral coronal suture immobilization resulted in significantly decreased bone growth at the coronal suture (mean 0.95 mm +/- 0.35 SE) when compared to sham-treated control animals (mean 5.06 mm +/- 0.20 SE). Frontonasal sut

Recent developments in computer-aided medical imaging coupled with the related emergence of computer-aided design and manufacturing technology have had a significant effect on our management of patients with congenital and acquired head and neck deformities. In our institution, plain film skull radiography, cephalometry, and pluridirectional tomography have been largely replaced by high-resolution CT scanning augmented by planar reformations and three-dimensional surface reconstructions. A sophisticated computer-assisted radiologic imaging unit has been established to assist the surgeon and re

Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition that may lead to a variety of comorbidities in adolescence and adulthood. The gold standard of diagnosing OSA is polysomnography (PSG). Over the past fifteen years numerous publications have explored how to better visualize the upper airway to further assess OSA in the pediatric population, and eventually institute personalized treatment. Lateral neck radiograph, cephalometry, computed axial tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging are all unique imaging techniques that are used in the diagnosis of OSA. Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy is a

Apert's syndrome is a malformation characterized by abnormalities in the cranial vault, midfacial malformations, and syndactylia. The present study analyzes the lateral and frontal projections of the teleradiograms from five patients. Data were taken on the skeletal features and an attempt was made to interpret them in terms of functional matrices. We have used cephalometry as a descriptive device although the intent was also to use it to provide a perspective on the pathogenetic data derived from the literature. The hypothesis analyzed is that from the outset of craniofacial pathogenesis ther

A prospective study of 34 consecutive patients with the sleep apnea syndrome was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness and complications of, and predictors of, results in a conservative type of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). At six months, 65% of the patients had a 50% or greater reduction in the number of apneas and hypopneas per hour (responders). The responders to UPPP were less severely affected preoperatively regarding apneas and hypopneas, the mean number of which (+/- SD) were 32.7 +/- 20.8 compared with 64.6 +/- 26.0. They also had a lower body mass index before UPPP (31.3 +/- 4.

Forty patients with premature craniosynostosis of variable extent and severity were subjected to cephalometry. The majority of the children and adolescents involved had undergone bilateral cranial fenestration at age 6 months to 11 years. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were used for analysis. The measurements obtained were compared with normal values of comparable age groups. In two thirds of the patients examined facial skull growth was found to be impaired, the clinical appearance ranging from pronounced faciostenosis to abortive forms. In some cases the clinical appearance was normal. On

Background: Bimaxillary (BiMax) advancement surgeries are one of the most frequently performed procedures in the orthognathic subspecialty of craniomaxillofacial surgery. The growing digitalization of the planning process and the shift from physical to virtual settings in procedure design have allowed, among other things, for better visualization of surgeries, improved preparation, and a more profound understanding of individual anatomy. Therefore, the question of the accuracy of performed virtual planning (VP) as well as the available methods of its evaluation arises naturally. The aim of thi

Long-bone morphometry and cephalometry were performed in 13 newborns with oligohydramnios sequence (OS) in order to establish whether or not skeletal changes existed in extrinsic fetal akinesia similar to those observed in the fetal akinesia deformative sequence (FADS) (i.e., hypoplastic long bones and micrognathia). Oligohydramnios sequence was caused by bilateral renal agenesis in five cases and obstructive uropathy in eight cases. Twenty-one stillborns and newborns who had died from conditions other than renal anomalies or congenital malformations were used as controls. Normal longitudinal

We examined the craniofacial characteristics of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and correlated them with the body mass index (BMI (weight (kg) x height (m2)). Eighty-five men with OSAS diagnosed by conventional polysomonography were divided into two groups according to their BMI (< 30 and > or = 30). Cephalometry was analysed by using 31 measurements of the size of the bone structures, their relationships and the size of the airways. The groups were comparable for age and the apnoea-hypopnoea index (mean 49, standard deviation (SD) 23). Patient with a BMI < 30 had a shor
