Visceral leishmaniasis in vervet monkeys: immunological responses during asymptomatic infections.

Nine vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were infected intradermally with 8 x 10(7) virulent L. donovani promastigotes. Four animals developed clinical visceral leishmaniasis and died over a period of 18 months. The remaining five animals have remained asymptomatic for a period of 3 years now. Attempts to isolate parasites from spleen and liver through biopsies were fruitless. Immunological responses of these subclinically infected animals were examined. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot analyses demonstrated Leishmania specific antibodies in these animals, but the

Hepatitis in vervet monkeys caused by Fusarium moniliforme.

The fungus Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon is a common contaminant of maize (Zea mays L.) intended for human and animal consumption throughout the world. Culture material of F. moniliforme MRC 826, isolated from home-grown maize in an area in Transkei, southern Africa, with a high rate of human oesophageal cancer, was highly toxic to vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus pygerythrus). Ten monkeys were fed a standard primate diet which contained various amounts of culture material for 180 days. Two control monkeys received the standard diet without culture material. Pathological changes observed in liver

Trypanosomal cardiac valvulitis in vervet monkeys.

Quarantined vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were infected with Trypanosoma brucei (10(4) parasites/animal) in a tsetse free area. Thirteen monkeys (11 infected with T.b. rhodesiense and 2 with T.b. brucei) were studied. Animals became parasitaemic within one week after infection. The infection time lasted between 21 and 129 days; in 8 monkeys it was between 50 and 70 days. Macroscopically massive pericarditis was observed in one, pericardial effusion in one, small apical aneurysms in three. Microscopically all had pancarditis of moderate to marked degree including all 4 chambers, the a

Analysis of pathogenesis and topography of replacement root resorption (ankylosis) after replantation of mature permanent incisors in monkeys.

The pathogenesis and topography of replacement root resorption (ankylosis) after replantation of incisors was examined in green Vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). Incisors were replanted after 0,18 or 120 min. storage and examined histometrically for replacement resorption after 2, 4 and 8 weeks. There was a significant preference for certain locations upon the root surface. Thus, ankylosis was found significantly more often on the rounded labial and lingual surfaces than on the flat or concave proximal surfaces, and on the apical portion of the root in contrast to the coronal portion. A

Whole-genome sequencing reveals evidence for inter-species transmission of the yaws bacterium among nonhuman primates in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue (TPE) is the causative agent of human and nonhuman primate (NHP) yaws infection. The discovery of yaws bacterium in wild populations of NHPs opened the question of transmission mechanisms within NHPs, and this work aims to take a closer look at the transmission of the disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Our study determined eleven whole TPE genomes from NHP isolates collected from three national parks in Tanzania: Lake Manyara National Park (NP), Serengeti NP, and Ruaha NP. The bacteria were isolated from four species of NHPs: Chlorocebu

Metabolic sequelae of experimental leptospirosis in grivet monkeys.

Leptospira interrogans serovars balcanica and tarassovi both induced mild subclinical infections in grivet monkeys. The activities in serum of lactate dehydrogenase, alpha-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and creatine phosphokinase and the level of alpha 1-antichymotrypsin increased in a few days after infection. Concomitant decreases in serum iron levels were observed in some cases. These changes occurred in the absence of any observable clinical signs though there were histopathological lesions in some organs. No haematological changes or al

Pathogen-host associations and predicted range shifts of human monkeypox in response to climate change in central Africa.

Climate change is predicted to result in changes in the geographic ranges and local prevalence of infectious diseases, either through direct effects on the pathogen, or indirectly through range shifts in vector and reservoir species. To better understand the occurrence of monkeypox virus (MPXV), an emerging Orthopoxvirus in humans, under contemporary and future climate conditions, we used ecological niche modeling techniques in conjunction with climate and remote-sensing variables. We first created spatially explicit probability distributions of its candidate reservoir species in Africa's Cong

Diets realistic for westernized people significantly effect lipoproteins, calcium, zinc, vitamins C, E, B6 and haematology in vervet monkeys.

This report describes measurements of 50 variables in adult, female, reproductively inactive Vervet monkeys during prolonged nutrition realistic for westernized people. Dietary treatments consisted of an atherogenic Western diet (WD) and a prudent Western diet (PD). Ingredients were normal foods for man and no extra cholesterol was added. Fortification of both diets with vitamin C after cooking was necessary to prevent deficiency. Randomised groups of Vervet monkeys received either the PD or WD for 47 months, while a third group was fed WD for 20 months and then PD for 27 months (WD-PD). Befor

Feline insular amyloid: histochemical distinction from secondary systemic amyloid.

Amyloid in islets of Langerhans from 48 domestic cats, one human, one non-human primate, and one raccoon was compared with secondary systemic amyloid from three domestic cats, one dog, one human, and one cow to determine affinity for Congo red dye after treatment of paraffin-embedded tissue sections with potassium permanganate and dilute sulfuric acid. Insular amyloid from all six species was resistant to pretreatment with potassium permanganate, i.e., affinity for Congo red was retained, whereas secondary systemic amyloid from all species was sensitive to the potassium permanganate pretreatme

MPXV: Update on Morphological and Morphogenesis Aspects Through Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopies and 3D Reconstruction.

An unprecedented global outbreak caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV) prompted the World Health Organization to declare a public health emergency of international concern on July 23, 2022. Therapeutics and vaccines for MPXV are not widely available, necessitating further studies, particularly in drug repurposing area. To this end, the standardization of in vitro infection systems is essential. The most robust in vitro studies on poxviruses concern the Vaccinia virus, and there are significant gaps in understanding the replicative cycle of MPXV. Herein, we conducted ultrastructural studies usin

Examination of magnitudes of integration in the catarrhine vertebral column.

The evolution of novel vertebral morphologies observed in humans and other extant hominoids may be related to changes in the magnitudes and/or patterns of covariation among traits. To examine this, we tested magnitudes of integration in the vertebral column of cercopithecoids and hominoids, including humans. Three-dimensional surface scans of 14 vertebral elements from 30 Cercopithecus, 32 Chlorocebus, 39 Macaca, 45 Hylobates, 31 Pan, and 86 Homo specimens were used. A resampling method was used to generate distributions of integration coefficient of variation scores for vertebral elements ind

Estimating the geographic distribution of human Tanapox and potential reservoirs using ecological niche modeling.

BACKGROUND: Tanapox virus is a zoonotic infection that causes mild febrile illness and one to several nodular skin lesions. The disease is endemic in parts of Africa. The principal reservoir for the virus that causes Tanapox is unknown, but has been hypothesized to be a non-human primate. This study employs ecological niche modeling (ENM) to determine areas of tropical Africa suitable for the occurrence of human Tanapox and a list of hypothetical reservoirs. The resultant niche model will be a useful tool to guide medical surveillance activities in the region. METHODS: This study uses the Des

Public health significance of zoonotic bacterial pathogens from bushmeat sold in urban markets of Gabon, Central Africa.

Wild animal meat represents an important source of protein for many people in central Africa. Also known as bushmeat, this meat commodity is derived from wild animals hunted under uncontrolled conditions, transported to distant markets under rudimentary or no hygienic methods, and often eviscerated >24 hr after death. Considering the plausible role of wildlife as a reservoir for bacterial zoonotic pathogens, bushmeat may be an important public health risk in Central Africa. This cross-sectional survey served to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Shigella in the muscle tiss

Thalamic neuronal activity in dopamine-depleted primates: evidence for a loss of functional segregation within basal ganglia circuits.

Different analyses of neuronal activity in primate models of Parkinson's disease (PD) have resulted in two different views on the effects of dopamine depletion. The first is based on the higher firing rate and bursty firing pattern, and assumes that dopamine depletion results in a hyperactivity of basal ganglia (BG) output structures. The second is based on the less-specific responses to passive joint manipulation and the excessive correlations between neuronal discharges, and assumes that dopamine depletion results in a loss of functional segregation in cortico-BG circuits. The aim of the pre

Dermal exposure assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: in vitro percutaneous penetration from lubricating oil.

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous penetration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is affected by various factors connected to exposure conditions. The nature of the matrix, such as that of oil, can strongly affect their percutaneous penetration. Risk assessment should consider these effects. We examined the effect of matrix on percutaneous penetration of PAHs, particularly that of lubricating oil. METHODS: The test apparatus consisted of an in vitro static diffusion cell system using full-thickness monkey (Cercopithecus aetiops) skin as the membrane and saline solution with gentamycin sulfate a

Pulp reactions to restoration of experimentally induced crown fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Reattachment of the avulsed enamel-dentine coronal fragment to the remaining tooth structure has become an accepted clinical alternative to a resin composite build-up for the restoration of crown fractured teeth. Since little knowledge exists as to the pulpal response to this procedure, this study was designed to observe the condition of the pulp following experimentally induced crown fracture and restoration in monkeys. METHODS: Experiments were conducted in eight young green Vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops). In all, 64 fractured incisors were investigated. Light microscop

Expression of individual mutations and haplotypes in the galactocerebrosidase gene identified by the newborn screening program in New York State and in confirmed cases of Krabbe's disease.

Newborn screening (NBS) for Krabbe's disease (KD) has been instituted in several states, and New York State has had the longest experience. After an initial screening of dried blood spots, samples from individuals with galactocerebrosidase (GALC) values below a given cutoff level were subjected to additional testing, including sequencing of the GALC gene. This resulted in the identification of mutations that had previously been found in confirmed KD patients and of variants that had never previously been reported. Some individuals had variants considered to be polymorphisms, alone or on the sa

Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia intestinalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in Captive Non-Human Primates in Qinling Mountains.

Non-human primates (NHPs) are confirmed as reservoirs of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia intestinalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi. In this study, 197 fresh fecal samples from 8 NHP species in Qinling Mountains, northwestern China, were collected and examined using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method. The results showed that 35 (17.8%) samples were positive for tested parasites, including Cryptosporidium spp. (3.0%), G. intestinalis (2.0%), and E. bieneusi (12.7%). Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 6 fecal samples of Macaca mulatta, and were identified as C. parvum (n=1) and C. anderson

Prevalence of antibodies and cell mediated immune response against Leishmania major in feral nonhuman primates from Kenya.

In Kenya, Leishmania major is responsible for human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Natural infection with L. major of a vervet monkey and experimental susceptibility of some nonhuman primates (NHPs) from Kenya has been established. However, there has been no comprehensive study of the prevalence of zoonotic CL in Kenya. And also, no investigation has been done to assess whether NHPs could be potential reservoir hosts of L. major even when the involvement of reservoir animals is obligatory in transmission of this parasite. To achieve this, wild caught Chlorocebus aethiops (Vervet monkeys n=213),
