[Vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases].

Vitamin D is a lipid-soluble steroid hormone whose role has been well-known in calcium and bone metabolism for a long time. In the last decades, vitamin D deficiency, which affects approximately 24% to 40% of the population, has been linked to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders including cerebrovascular diseases, one of the leading causes of death worldwide. According to epidemiological studies, vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased risk and more severe outcome of ischemic stroke, vascular cognitive impairment, and cerebral cavernous malformations. Although several con

Sleep-disordered breathing in acute ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack: effects on short- and long-term outcome and efficacy of treatment with continuous positive airways pressure--rationale and design of the SAS CARE study.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep-disordered breathing represents a risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and negatively affects short-term and long-term outcome after an ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack. The effect of continuous positive airways pressure in patients with sleep-disordered breathing and acute cerebrovascular event is poorly known. The SAS CARE 1 study assesses the effects of sleep-disordered breathing on clinical evolution, vascular functions, and markers within the first three-months after an acute cerebrovascular event. The SAS CARE 2 assesses the effect of conti

Neuropathological features of cerebrovascular diseases.

Optimal blood flow through a patent cerebral circulation is critical for supply of oxygen and nutrients for brain function. The integrity of vascular elements within arterial vessels of any calibre can be compromised by various disease processes. Pathological changes in the walls of veins and the venous system may also alter the dynamics of cerebral perfusion. The consequences of both systemic vascular and cerebrovascular diseases range from acute focal changes to irreversible chronic restructuring of the brain parenchyma. Cerebral infarcts of different sizes may instigate a cascade of program

A case-based systematic review on the SARS-COVID-2-associated cerebrovascular diseases and the possible virus routes of entry.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) sparked a global pandemic that continues to affect various facets of human existence. Many sources reported virus-induced acute cerebrovascular disorders. Systematically, this paper reviews the case studies of COVID-19-related acute cerebrovascular diseases such as ischaemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and cerebral sinus thrombosis. We also spoke about how SARS-CoV-2 can infect the brain and trigger the aforementioned disorders. We stated that SARS-CoV-2 neuroinvasion and BBB dysfunction could cause the observed disorders; howe

A new method for visualizing cerebrovascular vessels.

Studying the cerebrovasculature is crucial for both basic neuroscience and clinical medicine, as the brain's vascular network is dynamic and undergoes changes with aging and disease. In this study, we introduce a novel approach for visualizing cerebrovascular vessels. The method is simple, requires no exogenous fluorophores, and allows for multiple labeling with additional molecular markers. This method will facilitate cerebrovascular research concerning angiogenesis and remodeling associated with aging, cerebrovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cardiovascular diseases within 24 months after delivery.

BACKGROUND: Despite the well-known association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cardiovascular diseases, there are limited data on which specific cardiovascular diagnoses have the greatest risk profiles during the first 24 months after delivery. Most existing data on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and short-term cardiovascular disease risks are limited to the immediate postpartum period; however, it is crucial to determine cardiovascular disease risk up to 24 months after delivery to inform cardiovascular disease screening protocols during the extended postpartum period. Role of non-coding RNAs in age-related vascular cognitive impairment: An overview on diagnostic/prognostic value in Vascular Dementia and Vascular Parkinsonism.

Age is the pivotal risk factor for different common medical conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and dementia. Among age-related disorders, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, represent the leading causes of premature mortality strictly related to vascular ageing, a pathological condition characterized by endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hypertension, heart disease and stroke. These features negatively impact on the brain, owing to altered cerebral blood flow, neurovascular coupling and impaired endothelial permeability leading to cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs)

Stroke as a complication of medical disease.

This article focuses on the medical diseases that not only lead to cerebrovascular complications, but at times initially manifest as cerebral infarction. Specifically, I examine the relationships between stroke and various medical diseases (inflammatory disease, migraine and other vasoconstrictive disorders, congenital heart disease, connective tissue disorders, infectious disease, malignancy, and polycystic kidney disease). Many of these conditions may cause cerebrovascular ischemia via nonatherosclerotic mechanisms. Understanding these relationships between stroke and medical disease will al

Sleep and Stroke.

Evidence increasingly suggests sleep disorders are associated with higher risk of cardiovascular events, including stroke. Strong data correlate untreated sleep apnea with poorer stroke outcomes and more recent evidence implicates sleep disruption as a possible etiology for increased cerebrovascular events. Also, sleep duration may affect incidence of cardiovascular events. In addition, sleep-disordered breathing, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and parasomnias can occur as a result of cerebrovascular events. Treatment of sleep disorders improve sleep-related symptoms and may also improve st

[Genetic association between the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene alleles and various forms of Alzheimer's disease].

Allele epsilon 4 of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is associated with higher risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in many, though not all, ethnic groups. The APOE allele and genotype frequency distributions were studied in 207 AD patients without cerebrovascular disorders, 62 AD patients with cerebrovascular disorders (combined AD), and 206 control individuals (ethnic Russians from the Russian population). The frequency of allele epsilon 4 in patients with early-onset and late-onset AD was three times higher than in control individuals (p < 0.000001). Compared with control people, patients with
