Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the brains of rabid dogs in the Philippines.

Dogs are the primary transmitters of the rabies virus in the Philippines; however, to the best of our knowledge, no published studies have examined its detailed neuropathology. The present study analyzed the neuropathology in the cerebrum, hippocampus, thalamus, and brainstem of 70 rabid dogs with confirmed rabies infection in the Philippines. Histopathologically, inclusion bodies (Negri bodies) were detected in the hippocampus (87.14%), cerebrum (70%), and thalamus (2.86%) of the dogs. The inclusion bodies in the cytoplasm of the hippocampal and cerebral cortical pyramidal cells were large an

Functional differentiation between cerebral and cerebellar white matter in word decoding and automaticity: a diffusion MRI study.

The involvement of both the cerebrum and the cerebellum in reading processes has been acknowledged in previous research, yet their specific contributions remained unclear. In this study, we employed machine learning techniques and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to elucidate the respective roles of the cerebrum and the cerebellum in reading in adult readers (n = 109, 63 females, mean age = 21 years). We discovered that fractional anisotropy (FA) across the entire brain effectively differentiated good readers from those with poorer reading abilities. Furthermore, compared to the FA within the ce

Oral administration of Centella asiatica (L.) Urb leave aqueous extract ameliorates cerebral oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in male rats with type-2 diabetes.

Centella asiatica is claimed to have a neuroprotective effect; however, its ability to protect the cerebrum against damage in diabetes has never been identified. The aims were to identify the possibility that C. asiatica ameliorates inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in the cerebrum in diabetes. C. asiatica leave aqueous extract (C. asiatica) (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/b.w.) were given to diabetic rats for 28 days. Changes in rats' body weight, food and water intakes, and insulin and FBG levels were monitored. Following sacrificed, cerebrum was harvested and subjected for histological,

Dynamic causal modeling of cerebello-cerebral connectivity when sequencing trait-implying actions.

Prior studies suggest that the cerebellum contributes to the prediction of action sequences as well as the detection of social violations. In this dynamic causal modeling study, we explored the effective connectivity of the cerebellum with the cerebrum in processing social action sequences. A first model aimed to explore functional cerebello-cerebral connectivity when learning trait/stereotype-implying action sequences. We found many significant bidirectional connectivities between mentalizing areas of the cerebellum and the cerebrum including the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) and medial pre

Brain volumetry from CT-scan endocasts of three neotropical carnivores.

Studies on brain anatomy can clarify specific evolutionary and behavioural aspects of wild animals. The rich diversity in a broad range of habitats makes carnivorans especially eligible for studying the relations between the brain form and behaviour, cognitive, sensorial and motor traits. This study compared the brain's contour and total and segmented brain volumetry in three species of neotropical carnivorans. CT images of 17 skulls of three species were acquired: Conepatus chinga (n = 6), Galictis cuja (n = 6) and Lontra longicaudis (n = 5). Three-dimensional endocasts allowed for estimating

Pathological changes in masked palm civets experimentally infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus.

Masked palm civets are highly susceptible to infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV). Infected animals become less aggressive and develop pyrexia, lethargy and diarrhoea. The present study describes the spectrum of histopathological changes in the lung, spleen, lymph node, liver, small intestine, kidney and cerebrum of civets infected experimentally with SARS-CoV. In-situ hybridization (ISH) with probes specific for the RNA polymerase gene demonstrated viral RNA in the lung, small intestine and cerebrum only. In-situ labelling was employed in order to demons

Altered Cerebro-Cerebellar Effective Connectivity in New-Onset Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy.

(1) Objective: Resting-state fMRI studies have indicated that juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) could cause widespread functional connectivity disruptions between the cerebrum and cerebellum. However, the directed influences or effective connectivities (ECs) between these brain regions are poorly understood. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the ECs between the cerebrum and cerebellum in patients with new-onset JME. (2) Methods: Thirty-four new-onset JME patients and thirty-four age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. We compared the degre

A new perspective for understanding the contributions of the cerebellum to reading: The cerebro-cerebellar mapping hypothesis.

Extensive studies have reported significant activation of the cerebellum in reading and reading-related tasks. However, it has remained unclear how the cerebellum contributes to reading and how reading-related regions in the cerebrum are related to those in the cerebellum. In this review, by summarizing previous literature, we observe that multiple cerebellar areas are engaged in reading and vary in their contributions to reading. Moreover, the cerebellar reading-related areas are selectively connected with the cerebral areas with the same functional specificity. Abnormalities in the cerebro-c

[Clinical features of cases whose cerebral blood flow was preserved only in the basal ganglia region].

In the series of our studies of positron emission tomography (PET), we had some cases whose cerebral blood flow was reduced in the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem, and was preserved only in the basal ganglia region. We studied their clinical features and electrophysiological findings of these cases. These 5 cases included neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, Krabbe disease, Tay-Sachs disease, progressive myoclonus epilepsy and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. Clinically they showed symptoms associated with diffuse cerebral and brain stem involvements. Electrophysiological studies also revea

Factors contributing to cerebral hypomyelination in the growth hormone-deficient little mouse.

We attempted to delineate the events leading to hypomyelination in the brain of the little mouse, a promising murine model of isolated growth hormone deficiency. At 20 days of age, the mutant mouse brain weighed less than its normal counterpart, and this difference in brain weight persisted. Increase in CNPase activity was found to be suppressed in the cerebrum throughout the developmental stage, but not in the other parts of the brain. Differences in cerebral DNA content between the little and normal mice first became apparent on the 10th day of age. Thereafter, the rate of increase in the li

Canagliflozin alleviates valproic acid-induced autism in rat pups: Role of PTEN/PDK/PPAR-γ signaling pathways.

Autism is complex and multifactorial, and is one of the fastest growing neurodevelopmental disorders. Canagliflozin (Cana) is an antidiabetic drug that exhibits neuroprotective properties in various neurodegenerative syndromes. This study investigated the possible protective effect of Cana against the valproic acid (VPA)-induced model of autism. VPA was injected subcutaneously (SC) into rat pups at a dose of 300 mg/kg, twice daily on postnatal day-2 (PD-2) and PD-3, and once on PD-4 to induce an autism-like syndrome. Graded doses of Cana were administered (5 mg/kg, 7.5 mg/kg, and 10 mg/kg, P.O

Magnetic resonance imaging features of four neonates with total brain injury.

PURPOSE: The most severe form of profound asphyxia in neonates is now known as "total brain injury," which forms part of the clinical spectrum of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Although the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of total brain injury remain to be determined, a widespread hyperintensity of the supratentorial brain, known as the "white cerebrum sign," has been reported in diffusion-weighted images (DWI). METHODS: We examined four neonates who developed severe profound asphyxia. RESULTS: In the first week of life, all neonates showed the white cerebrum sign on DWI. A

Brain lipid analysis in mice with Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RS) is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder mostly involving mutations in the gene for methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). Ganglioside abnormalities were previously found in cerebrum and cerebellum in RS patients. We evaluated total lipid distribution in cerebrum/brainstem, hippocampus, and cerebellum in male mice carrying either the Mecp2 (tm1.1Bird) knockout mutation or the Mecp2 (308/y) deletion mutation. The concentration of the neuronal enriched ganglioside GD1a was significantly lower in the cerebrum/brainstem of Mecp2 (tm1.1Bird) mice than in that of age matched cont

Injury to the Cerebellum in Term Asphyxiated Newborns Treated with Hypothermia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Until now, most studies of brain injury related to term neonatal encephalopathy have focused on the cerebrum and ignored the cerebellum. We sought to evaluate whether cerebellar injury occurs in term asphyxiated neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Asphyxiated neonates treated with hypothermia were enrolled prospectively. Severity of brain injury in the cerebrum was scored on each MR imaging obtained during the first month of life; cerebellar injury was recorded when mentioned in the imaging or autopsy report. In addition, for some of the neonates, the ADC and fractional a
