Dysphagia secondary to osteoid osteoma of the transverse process of the second cervical vertebra.

Dysphagia due to bony lesions of the cervical spine is rare. Almost all reported cases have been secondary to cervical osteophyte formation. We present an unusual case of a 58-year-old male who presented with dysphagia of insidious onset. Investigations revealed osteoid osteoma arising from the transverse process of the second cervical vertebra extending anteriorly in a curvilinear manner. The surgical management of this case is discussed in this report. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of dysphagia secondary to osteoid osteoma of cervical spine.

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the spine: report of a case involving a cervical vertebra.

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the spine is a rare entity. Only 26 cases, of which 11 were located in the cervical spine, are to be found in the literature. We report a 56-year-old male patient with cervicobrachialgia of half year's duration. Radiographs showed a diffuse destruction of the vertebral body and the spinous process of C4. A biopsy of the spinous process confirmed histopathologically a fibrous dysplasia. Due to minor symptoms, no surgical treatment was performed or is planned unless in case of increasing pain, an acute instability or neurological symptoms.

Endodermal cyst of the cervical spinal cord with associated partial fusion of the vertebrae.

A case of a 43-year-old woman with an intradural endodermal cyst at the C4 spinal cord level is presented. The lesion manifested with progressive neck pain and weakness of lower extremities. The presumptive diagnosis of extramedullary benign cystic lesion was established after MRI examination. Coexisting partial fusion of the C5-C6 vertebral bodies was found on X-ray films. The patient was cured by resection of the cyst wall, performed by laminectomy. Pathological examination revealed a cyst wall lined with ciliated cuboidal cells, resembling the respiratory epithelium. Immunohistochemistry de

[Cervical vertebra-induced hearing and equilibrium disorders. Recent clinical aspects].

The contribution of cervical spine disorders to cochleovestibular symptoms was based on the evaluation of patients complaining of dizziness and/or inner ear hearing loss, treated in the ENT Department of Tubingen University between 1977 and 1982. Cervicogenic vertigo was provoked by movements of the cervical spine, but the latter rarely caused tinnitus and never induced hearing loss. The diagnosis between a vascular or proprioceptive nystagmus may be made on the presence of lesions of the cervical spine. These are disorders of the cranio-cervical or the thoraco-cervical region especially and m

Giant-cell tumor of the second cervical vertebra treated by cryosurgery and irradiation.

A 17-year-old female presented with a large, destructive, giant-cell tumor of the second cervical vertebra. The lesion was obviously life-threatening. Owing to its proximity to the spinal cord and the danger of a pathologic fracture with cord transection and because of the effectiveness of cryosurgical methods in treating giant cell tumors of long bones, we decided to attempt local freezing of the lesion using a cryoprobe via a transoral approach. To further ensure tumor destruction, we followed cryosurgery with a course of radiotherapy (4600 rads). At this writing, 30 months later, healing ha

Exploring the micromorphological characteristics of adult lower cervical vertebrae based on micro-computed tomography.

We will use micro-computed tomography to scan 31 sets of the adult lower cervical vertebrae (155 vertebrae) to observe the morphological characteristics and direction of trabeculae in the lower cervical vertebrae by outlining and reconstructing the regions of interest and to calculate the variation laws of the microstructure in the regions of interest to reveal their structural characteristics and weak areas. As a result, the images showed that the trabeculae in the lower cervical pedicle near the medial and lateral cortices were relatively dense, and their bone plates were lamellar. There wer

Disposition of cervical vertebrae, atlanto-axial joint, hyoid and mandible during x-ray laryngoscopy.

Ten healthy volunteers underwent direct laryngoscopy using topical anaesthesia and a curved Macintosh laryngoscope blade. A lateral x-ray was performed during laryngoscopy in a standard intubating position. In this position the lower neck was relatively straight and increasing curvature occurred from the mid cervical spine upwards. Extension at the atlanto-axial joint was probably near maximum; this has implications for conditions associated with laxity of this joint. The position of the mandible was influenced by the direction of pull on the laryngoscope handle. The hyoid was drawn forward an

[Cause of increased focal uptake in the cervical vertebrae in skeletal scintigraphic routine studies].

Focal uptake was seen in the cervical vertebral column of 61 patients in the course of routine bone scintigraphy. These focal increases were subjected to close analysis. In 60 of these patients (98.4%) degenerative lesions became manifest as the cause of the scintigraphic finding already by the bone scintigraphy pattern (paravertebral localisation in the posterior projection and dorsal localisation in the lateral. Two typical examples of metastatic changes are presented to facilitate differentiation. The bone scintigraphic pattern in arthrosis of the intervertebral joint is so typical that x-r

Sex estimation via the measurement of the seventh cervical vertebrae on Computerized Tomography images.

Background: Sex estimation from skeletal remains is crucial for estimating an individuals biological profile. Although the pelvis and skull are most commonly used for sex estimation, other skeletal elements, e.g., the vertebrae, have reportedly demonstrated acceptable accuracy rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of using seventh cervical vertebra measurements on computed tomography images for sex estimation. Material and methods: Cervical computed tomography images of 300 female and 300 male patients (= 20 aged 60 = years) were evaluated. Sex estimation modeling was perfo

Construction of a Statistical Cervical Vertebrae Geometric Model for Children 3-10 Years Old.

Cervical spinal injuries of children in motor vehicle crashes have high morbidity and mortality rates. Cervical vertebrae change rapidly in both size and shape during growth. To accurately assess the risk of spinal injury for children of different ages, it is necessary to understand how the spatial geometric features of vertebrae change with the child's age and neck size. In this study, an innovative semi-automated method was developed that can extract and align geometric points from computed tomography scans to accurately represent complex three-dimensional vertebral geometry. Based on these

Discrete morphological variants of human cervical vertebrae: Exploring pattern of distribution and biological significance.

Studies on discrete traits of the human cervical vertebrae, appearing at certain intervals during the last century, posed some questions regarding evolutionary processes that human cervical spine underwent during phylogenesis. To address questions of significance of these morphological traits we need first a good knowledge of the extent of their variation in modern humans. The aim of the current work was to integrate available data on the occurrence of various non-metric traits in the human cervical spine and search for the pattern of their distribution on intra- and inter-population levels.
