The use of geographic information systems as a forensic tool to investigate sources of marine mammal entanglement in fisheries.

Commercial fisheries represent a significant anthropogenic threat to marine mammal survival. Causes of marine mammal mortality are commonly determined by detailed necropsies of stranded carcasses. Gross evidence of entanglement in a fishery might include gear attached to the body, internal indications of asphyxiation and trauma, or gear markings on the epidermis. As gear is often fishery-specific, wound patterns on the epidermis that are created by entanglements in fishing gear may serve to identify possible sources of mortality. For this study, tools within the Environmental Systems Research

Acute and chronic gas bubble lesions in cetaceans stranded in the United Kingdom.

The first evidence suggestive of in vivo gas bubble formation in cetacea, including eight animals stranded in the UK, has recently been reported. This article presents the pathologic findings from these eight UK-stranded cetaceans and two additional UK-stranded cetacean cases in detail. Hepatic gas-filled cavitary lesions (0.2-6.0 cm diameter) involving approximately 5-90% of the liver volume were found in four (two juvenile, two adult) Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), three (two adult, one juvenile) common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), an adult Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densiro

Lateralized cerebellar connectivity differentiates auditory pathways in echolocating and non-echolocating whales.

We report the first application of diffusion tractography to a mysticete, which was analyzed alongside three odontocete brains, allowing the first direct comparison of strength and laterality of auditory pathways in echolocating and non-echolocating whales. Brains were imaged post-mortem at high resolution with a specialized steady state free precession diffusion sequence optimized for dead tissue. We conducted probabilistic tractography to compare the qualitative features, tract strength, and lateralization of potential ascending and descending auditory paths in the mysticete versus odontocet

Mapping potential pathogen profiling in cetacean blow: comparative insights from sequencing technologies.

Cetaceans play a critical role in marine ecosystems and function as sentinel species for detecting environmental perturbations, underscoring the importance of assessing their health for effective marine conservation. This study employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the prokaryotic communities present in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) samples from cetaceans, utilizing both short-read (Illumina) and long-read (PacBio) sequencing platforms. Putative pathogenic taxa were identified using the Multiple Bacterial Pathogen Detection (MBPD) database. Substantial differences in microbial co

When the small ones tease the largest: Microplastic and phthalate ester occurrence in cetaceans occasionally found in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Living in potentially burdened waters and prey on loaded species, marine mammals are sentinels for microplastic (MP) pollution. Here, seven different species of cetaceans were investigated covering baleen (Mysticeti) and toothed (Odontoceti) whales stranded along the German coast between 2016 and 2021. Intestinal and faecal samples of 12 sperm whales, three minke whales, two dolphin species, one long-finned pilot whale, one fin whale and one neonate orca were analysed. The concentrations of 11 phthalates were assessed in blubber and muscle samples. MPs were detected with Nile Red staining, pol

Metal and trace element concentrations in cetaceans worldwide: A review.

This bibliographical review is a compilation of different scientific publications that reported data on metal concentrations in the muscle tissue of different species of cetaceans from seas and oceans around the world. Forty-nine scientific articles were selected, published over a fifteen-year period (2006-2021) with data on heavy metals and trace elements. The different groups of cetaceans considered in this study generally presented low concentrations of Cd and Pb. The same cannot be said of Hg. The highest concentrations of Hg were found in the groups of false killer whales. Similarly, the

In vitro culture of the zoonotic nematode Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda, Anisakidae).

BACKGROUND: Anisakiasis is a foodborne disease caused by the third-stage larvae (L3) of two species belonging to the genus Anisakis: Anisakis pegreffii and Anisakis simplex sensu stricto. Both species have been the subject of different -omics studies undertaken in the past decade, but a reliable in vitro culture protocol that would enable a more versatile approach to functional studies has never been devised. In nature, A. pegreffii shows a polyxenous life-cycle. It reproduces in toothed whales (final host) and disseminates embryonated eggs via cetacean faeces in the water column. In the envir

Offset auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitude in bottlenose dolphins.

Although commonly recorded as onset responses, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) can also be elicited at stimulus offset. The offset ABR has not been extensively investigated in marine mammals. Three normal hearing (NH) and three hearing impaired (HI) dolphins were assessed while fully submerged in sea water. Stimulus spectrum, level, rise/fall time (RFT), and plateau duration were manipulated. Onset and offset ABR amplitude were quantified as the rms voltage 1-7 ms following stimulus onset or offset, respectively. For the same stimulus conditions, onset and offset responses were often lar

Trace elements in trophic webs from South Atlantic: The use of cetaceans as sentinels.

The odontocetes are at the top of the trophic chains, and because they accumulate numerous compounds throughout life, they are considered as bioindicators of ecosystem contamination. This study aimed to analyze the concentrations of trace elements of the short-beak common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Regardless of the tissue and the species, the average concentration of silver was the lowest. The highest concentration in the kidney was cadmium, while in the liver it varied between selenium and total mercury accordi

Ecotoxicity of engineered TiO2 nanoparticles to saltwater organisms: an overview.

The innovative properties of nanomaterials make them suitable for various applications in many fields. In particular, TiO2 nanoparticles (nTiO2) are widely used in paints, in cosmetics and in sunscreens that are products accessible to the mass market. Despite the great increase in the use of such nanomaterials, there is a paucity of general information about their potential effects to the aquatic species, especially to saltwater ones. Moreover, the difficulties of determining the effective exposure scenario make the acquired information low comparable. In this work, questions about the complex

Adaptive evolution of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3) may reduce cetacean susceptibility to decompression sickness.

Cetaceans tolerate repeated diving bouts. While the extent to which cetaceans experience decompression sickness remains debated, this group of fully aquatic mammals must have evolved a tolerance to damaging nitrogen (N2) gas bubbles that can form during overly rapid ascents or after prolonged dives. Here, we present the first in-depth molecular evolutionary analysis of the nitric oxide synthase gene family across cetaceans and identify cetacean-specific amino acid substitutions in NOS3 (encoding endothelial nitric oxide synthase) that likely arose in a stem cetacean ancestor, coincident with t

Concern for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Spillover into Cetaceans.

Influenza A virus (IAV) has a wide range of avian and mammalian hosts, leading to disease outbreaks and increasing the risk of panzootics and pandemics. Subtype H5N1 of clade 2.3.4.4b is causing the current high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) panzootic. Environmental changes are fuelling the spread of HPAI H5N1 in wildlife worldwide, with occasional spillover events from seabirds to cetaceans. Sampling difficulties and limited tests available for diagnosis are a challenge to cetacean virology research. Understanding the risk of HPAI outbreaks in cetaceans requires a comprehensive examina

Highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1) in marine mammals and seabirds in Peru.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A/H5N1 viruses (lineage 2.3.4.4b) are rapidly invading the Americas, threatening wildlife, poultry, and potentially evolving into the next global pandemic. In November 2022 HPAI arrived in Peru, triggering massive pelican and sea lion die-offs. We report genomic characterization of HPAI/H5N1 in five species of marine mammals and seabirds (dolphins, sea lions, sanderlings, pelicans and cormorants). Peruvian viruses belong to lineage 2.3.4.4b, but they are 4:4 reassortants where 4 genomic segments (PA, HA, NA and MP) position within the Eurasian lineage t

From the discovery of the Malta fever's agent to the discovery of a marine mammal reservoir, brucellosis has continuously been a re-emerging zoonosis.

Brucellosis is not a sustainable disease in humans. The source of human infection always resides in domestic or wild animal reservoirs. The routes of infection are multiple: food-borne, occupational or recreational, linked to travel and even to bioterrorism. New Brucella strains or species may emerge and existing Brucella species adapt to changing social, cultural, travel and agricultural environment. Brucella melitensis is the most important zoonotic agent, followed by Brucella abortus and Brucella suis. This correlates with the fact that worldwide, the control of bovine brucellosis (due to B

Trophic ecology structures mercury bioaccumulation across marine tetrapods: Implications for cross-taxa biomonitoring.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations in marine tetrapods vary widely across taxa, yet predicting contaminant burdens across ecologically diverse species remains a key challenge for environmental monitoring. Here, we evaluated how trophic ecology structures Hg bioaccumulation across marine tetrapods, testing the relative importance of ecological and taxonomic factors in explaining contaminant variability. Hepatic Hg concentrations were quantified in 151 individuals from 18 species (seabirds, cetaceans, and sea turtles) from the southwestern Atlantic, integrating δ¹⁵N as a proxy for trophic position. Molecular adaptations in MMP genes support lung elasticity and diving adaptations in cetaceans.

Cetaceans are a unique group of marine mammals that have evolved from terrestrial to fully aquatic life. During diving, they experience extreme physiological challenges, including lung collapse, limited gas exchange, and the risk of decompression-related injuries. The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) gene family plays a central role in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, vascular repair, and inflammatory responses, and is also involved in the formation and maintenance of elastic fibers-key components that contribute to lung elasticity. Enhanced lung elasticity is thought to facilitate reversi
