BACKGROUND: Acupotomy, a more invasive procedure than acupuncture, involves the use of a thicker needle with an integrated knife at the tip, necessitating safety research. We aimed to define relevant adverse events (AEs) and create a standardized form of the ACUPOtomy-related AEs CHECKlist (ACUPOCHECK).
METHODS: Before conducting the Delphi process, a systematic review and pilot prospective study were conducted to gather information on previously reported AEs. Using these data, pilot versions of the ACUPOCHECK and Delphi questionnaires were developed. The Delphi questionnaire involved selecti

BACKGROUND: The initial confirmatory factor analysis of the Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder Behavioral Checklist (ABC) utilized a population of 203 children. The analysis identified 10 independent measures (executive functioning, attention and concentration, cognition, memory, confabulation, gullibility, communication skills, academic skills, living/social skills, and juvenile justice). The 10 measures differentiated children with FASD from non-FASD controls. In this study, we present a validity study of the ABC using a different population of children with FASD and non-FASD contro

We present our experience of two cases: one of a 28-year-old male patient who presented with recurrent episodes of urinary tract infection (UTI) with passage of pus flakes in urine and a history of open cystolithotomy about 10 months ago. The second patient was a 26-year-old woman who underwent bladder exploration for a retained Double-J stent about 10 months ago and presented with recurrent UTI. The first case was treated with open surgery and in the second case, the gauze piece was retrieved endoscopically.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Following the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) warning about the use of transvaginal mesh to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and the use of single-incision slings to treat incontinence, the number of lawsuits for medical negligence regarding the use of any polypropylene mesh in the vagina has increased tremendously.
METHODS: This same FDA document did not question the use of polypropylene midurethral slings and polypropylene for sacrocolpopexies. Surprisingly, despite all the evidence and recommendations from respected international scientific societies

OBJECTIVE: To construct and validate a checklist for patient safety in emergency care.
METHOD: This is methodological research conducted in Curitiba, in 2015, with construction and validation stages. The checklist was based on the guidelines of the Brazilian patient safety programme and validated online using the Delphi method, with a questionnaire, and with the participation of 23 Brazilian specialists in the first round and 20 in the second round. The data were analysed using the Content Validity Index (CVI), Cronbach's α, and Fisher's Exact Test.
RESULTS: We produced a checklist with 18 v

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Persons with schizophrenia use various coping strategies to adapt to distressing symptoms as well as to deal with daily stressors. Efforts have been made to explore alternative frameworks of coping using Ways of Coping Checklist (WCC) in persons with schizophrenia. This study aimed to re-analyze (factor analysis) the revised-WCC in Indian patients with residual schizophrenia. The secondary aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship of new framework of coping with psychopathology, disability and quality of life (QOL).

Severe hypertension is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The South African Saving Mothers report (2011 - 2013) indicates that cerebral injury due to severe hypertension is resulting in avoidable maternal deaths. This demands that management of severe hypertension in pregnancy needs to be improved. A rapid-acting antihypertensive is recommended for the initial management of severe hypertension during pregnancy. A single dose of a rapid-acting agent may be ineffective, in which case incremental doses of the same medication or another antihypertensive may be required for adequate blood pr

BACKGROUND: In 2009, the World Health Organisation issued a worldwide recommendation for the use of its Surgical Safety Checklist in all operative procedures. In this review, we present the available data on the implementation of this checklist and its effect on perioperative morbidity and mortality and on operating-room safety culture. We also survey the experience with the checklist to date and give some recommendations for its practical implementation.
METHODS: We reviewed pertinent original publications retrieved by a selective search in the PubMed and Medline databases on the search term

OBJECTIVES: Delirium in critically ill patients is common and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Routine delirium screening is recommended by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC) is one validated and commonly-used tool, but little is known about nurses'perceptions of using the ICDSC, and of barriers to delirium assessment and treatment.
DESIGN: A survey was administered to 189 critical care-trained nurses working on four oncology inpatient units, where the ICDSC has been used for greater than five years.
RESULTS: Ei

Functional health outcome measures are increasingly being used in both clinica trials and practice as measures of patient health. Whilst outcome measures can be generic, there are a number of foot and ankle specific measures available and in use. These are being used as not only region specific but also disease specific measures of patient function. Unfortunately not all of these outcome measures have been completely validated which leads to challenges in applying the results of outcomes research to specific patients. Continued work however is being done in this area and these challenges provi

BACKGROUND Surgery-related adverse events remain a significant and often under-reported problem. In a recent study, the introduction of a perioperative checklist by the WHO reduced deaths and complications by 46% and 36% respectively. The authors wished to evaluate the introduction of a surgical safety checklist in a busy obstetric tertiary referral centre by assessing staff attitudes, checklist compliance and effects upon patients. METHODS A questionnaire-based assessment was performed on staff working in obstetric theatres before and after the introduction of the surgical safety checklist. C

BACKGROUND: The under-recognition of hypomanic symptoms by both clinicians and patients is a major clinical problem which contributes to misdiagnosis and diagnostic delay in patients with bipolar disorder. The recent development of validated screening instruments for hypomania, such as the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32), may help to improve the detection of bipolar disorder. In this study, we assess whether it is possible to reduce the number of items on the HCL-32 without any loss in the screening tool's ability to reliably differentiate between bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disord

The purposes of this study were to determine the overall incidence of distal radius fracture (DRF) complications, determine the incidence and types of DRF complications in a consecutive cohort of 250 patients with DRFs, describe DRF complications reported by patients compared with those reported by physicians, and formulate a DRF complication checklist to improve recording of DRF complications. We found that the overall complication rates vary widely (6% to 80%). Physician-reported complication data were collected for 236 patients, and a physician-reported complication rate of 27% was determin

Treatment plan quality is a crucial component for a successful outcome of radiation therapy treatments. As the complexity of radiation therapy planning and delivery techniques increases, the role of the medical physicist in assessing treatment plan quality becomes more critical. Integrating plan quality review throughout the treatment planning process allows improvements without delaying treatment or rushing to produce changes at the last minute. In this work, we aim to provide practical check items for physicists to reference when assessing treatment plan quality with a critical eye, asking q

PURPOSE: Spine deformity surgery is a complex multi-step procedure that has a relatively high complication rate. The use of surgical safety checklists has been shown to reduce perioperative adverse events, but existing lists are varied and non-specific for spinal deformity surgery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive surgical checklist for complex spinal corrective surgery.
METHODS: An electronic survey consisting of 187 surgical checklist items that had been developed and used by a group of SRS members over a 5-year period was distributed to the Scoliosis Research
