Review: parent-child relationships and child development in donor insemination families.

The present article reviews the empirical research regarding the parent-child relationships and the development of children in donor insemination (DI) families. Over the years, follow-up studies have appeared sporadically and, despite the varying quality of the research methods, preliminary findings have emerged. Heterosexual DI parents were psychologically well adjusted and had stable marital relationships. DI parents showed a similar or higher quality of parent-child interaction and a greater emotional involvement with their children compared with naturally conceived families. The majority o

Relationship between survival status of first child and subsequent child death.

This paper examines the association between infant mortality of the first born and subsequent children using data from rural Bangladesh collected during the period 1971-82. It shows that birth spacing and age of mother at the time of the second birth are important predictors of the survival status of the first child. The findings are discussed in terms of policy implications.

Effects of parent-child interaction therapy dosage on child and parent outcomes: differentiating child-directed interaction and parent-directed interaction session impacts in child welfare-involved families.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) improves parenting and child behavior, yet little is known about how dosage of its two phases, warm relationship building focused child-directed interaction (CDI) sessions and safe, effective discipline skills-focused parent-directed interaction (PDI) sessions, contributes to outcomes, particularly in child welfare-involved families. Understanding these dose-response patterns can clarify the pathways through which PCIT produces change. METHODS: In a sample of 204 child welfare families with young children, we examined the dose-response relat

Prospective Within-person Relations among Parental Child-oriented Perfectionism, Child maladaptive Perfectionism, and Child Depressive Symptoms: A Five-wave Study.

While existing research has well documented child perfectionism as a risk factor for depressive symptoms, relatively limited studies have delved into the specific influence of parental child-oriented perfectionism on children's depressive symptoms. This study tracked 2228 Chinese adolescents (baseline Mage = 12.95 ± 0.79 years, 46.3% girls) with five measurements over three years. Using the Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM), results indicated that maternal (not paternal) child-oriented perfectionism had bidirectional links with children's maladaptive perfectionism. Children's

Child's Play or Sexual Abuse? Reviewing the Efficacy of the Justice Framework in Dealing with Child on Child Sexual Abuse in the United Kingdom.

This literature review appraises how the justice system of the United Kingdom deals with child on child sexual abuse allegations. It is crucial to consider the impact of minor sexual abuse within the community. Sensationalized reporting of sex crimes demonizes offenders and unintentionally hides some perpetrators by not representing children can cause harm. Cases where children demonstrate sexual agency are confusing and uncomfortable to appropriate blame. A freedom of information request to the Metropolitan Police uncovered 5,500 minor sex abuse allegations in England and Wales between 2011 a

Household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators in Eastern Sierra Leone.

Child trafficking indicators remain highly prevalent in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, yet less is known about whether household-level correlates are robust when child-level variation within households is considered. This study examined household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators using baseline survey data from 2,429 households in Kailahun, Kenema, and Kono districts, including 5,999 rostered children aged 5-17. Child trafficking indicators were constructed from the survey's operational definition, including hazardous sectors, hazardous work conditions, and force, fraud, c

Parenting a Gender Diverse Child: Parent Experiences of a Child Coming Out.

PURPOSE: A young person coming out as gender diverse-having a gender identity that differs from sex assigned at birth-can be a significant moment of change for the entire family. This qualitative study explored parents' experiences of their child coming out as gender diverse. METHODS: Twenty-five parents of gender diverse youth, ages 6-20 years, from the United States, submitted videos and were interviewed regarding their experiences of their child coming out. Data collection ceased when thematic saturation was achieved. Videos and interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the rigorous a

Socioeconomic risk and the longitudinal child lifetime prevalence of child protection involvement.

BACKGROUND: North American studies find that geographic indicators of disadvantage, such as concentrated poverty, significantly increase the risk of child protection involvement. Despite having one of the most extensive family support systems and progressive income redistribution policies in North America, the Canadian province of Québec still faces geographic variations in socioeconomic conditions that remain a major risk factor for child protection involvement. OBJECTIVE: This study asks how child protection involvement is distributed across socioeconomically distinct geographic areas of th

Perceptions of parenthood and child development among parents who experienced child maltreatment.

Maltreatment survivors may be at risk for parenting challenges, although the previous literature is inconsistent, has focused on individual maltreatment forms, and has overlooked posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and other trauma exposure. The current study, thus, aimed to expand this research in four key ways by (a) examining all five maltreatment forms; (b) controlling for other nonmaltreatment trauma exposure to better isolate the role of maltreatment; (c) investigating maltreatment types and PTSS simultaneously; and (d) exploring novel parenting factors, specifically four types of paren

An Integrated Mother-Child Intervention on Child Development and Maternal Mental Health.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate an integrated, low-cost, facility-based group intervention designed to promote child care, boost maternal mental-wellbeing, reduce harsh discipline, and improve children's health, nutrition, and early development. METHODS: In Dhaka, 30 neighborhood clusters of a low-income urban community were randomized to intervention or control groups. Mothers with children between 6 and 24 months (n = 300) who self-reported negative discipline were identified and enrolled. A 1-year group intervention included integration of responsive caregiving, nutritional supplementation, caregi

Permanent Housing for Child Welfare-Involved Families: Impact on Child Maltreatment Overview.

A longitudinal randomized controlled trial tested whether access to permanent housing reduces child maltreatment among inadequately housed families under investigation for child abuse and neglect. The study followed homeless and child welfare-involved families randomly assigned to receive a referral for housing subsidies plus housing case management (n = 75, 196 children) or housing case management alone (n = 75, 186 children). Latent growth models examined change in caregiver-reported frequencies of psychological aggression, physical abuse, and neglect toward children at five time points acro

Characteristics of child sexual assault within a child advocacy center client population.

This descriptive study summarized data from a child advocacy center to illustrate how such information might be used to profile the scope and character of child sexual abuse (CSA) at the community level. This detailed information is not available from national or state data but is needed to understand the circumstances of the children receiving services and the type of care they may need. Variables included victim demographics, type of sexual abuse and relationship to the perpetrator, and the person to whom the victim was most likely to disclose their sexual assault. A total sample of 841 case

Effectiveness of home visiting in improving child health and reducing child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act established the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program, which provides $1.5 billion to states over 5 years for home visiting program models serving at-risk pregnant women and children from birth to age 5. The act stipulates that 75% of the funds must be used for programs with evidence of effectiveness based on rigorous evaluation research. Home Visiting Evidence of Effectiveness reviewed the home visiting research literature and provided an assessment of the evidence of effectiveness for program model

Child physical abuse risk moderates spontaneously inferred traits from ambiguous child behaviors.

The present study examined whether parents at high-risk for child physical abuse (CPA) differed from low-risk parents in their tendency to infer positive traits and negative traits from children's behaviors. The final sample consisted of 58 (25 low CPA risk and 33 high CPA risk) parents. Parents completed a false-recognition task, which involved viewing behavior descriptions paired with child photographs. Half of the behavior descriptions vaguely/strongly implied a trait and half of the implied traits were positive/negative. The contributions of automatic processes and controlled processes to

Dog bite risk: an assessment of child temperament and child-dog interactions.

Annually approximately 400,000 American children receive treatment for dog bites. Young children are at greatest risk and are frequently bitten following behavior that provokes familiar dogs. This study investigated the effects of child temperament on children's interaction with dogs. Eighty-eight children aged 3.5-6 years interacted with a live dog. Dog and child behaviors were assessed through observational coding. Four child temperament constructs-impulsivity, inhibitory control, approach and shyness-were assessed via the parent-report Children's Behavioral Questionnaire. Less shy children

Vulnerable child syndrome, parental perception of child vulnerability, and emergency department usage.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable child syndrome (VCS) describes children perceived to be at risk for behavioral, developmental, or medical problems. Families with the dynamics of VCS overuse health care resources with frequent visits to doctors' offices. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore the relationship between VCS, parental perception of child vulnerability (PPCV), and frequency of emergency department (ED) visits. DESIGN/METHODS: Parents of patients 1 to 15 years old presenting with nonurgent complaints to a pediatric ED were eligible. Participants completed questionnaires in whi

Children of substance-using mothers: child health engagement and child protection outcomes.

AIM: Maternal substance use has been associated with a range of child risk factors. The study investigated the relationship between engagement with child health services and child protection outcomes for children of substance-using mothers. METHODS: The sample comprised 119 children of mothers who disclosed opiate, amphetamine or methadone use during a maternity admission between 2000 and 2003. Statutory child protection agency and child health engagement information for the first 2 years of life was obtained. The relationship between type of maternal substance use, child health engagement an

[Undetected Hashimoto encephalopathy--a diagnostic challenge in child psychiatry and child neurology].

The literature is reviewed. Hashimoto encephalopathy is a steroid-responsive encephalopathy associated with Hashimoto thyroiditis (SREHT). The incidence of SREHT in childhood is underestimated. Two subtypes have been described. The diffuse progressive type is associated with insidious onset and progressive impairment of mental status, such as confusion, somnolence, and psychosis. The vasculitic type is characterized by acute stroke-like episodes associated with focal neurologic features and seizures. Hashimoto encephalopathy (SREHT) is a clinical condition with elevated thyroid antibody titers

Strength limitations to proper child safety seat installation: implications for child safety.

A majority of child safety restraints are misused in some manner, often leading to an increased risk of serious injury or death. It is possible that at least some instances of misuse are the result of biomechanical limitations during the installation process. Twenty-seven adult participants were trained and then monitored in three stages of child safety seat installation. All installations were done with an identical restraint system in the rear bench seat of a mocked-up minivan. EMG of 10 muscles, as well as trunk, shoulder, and wrist postures were analyzed. Peak maximum efforts were often re

Maternal depression and child internalizing: the moderating role of child emotion regulation.

This study tests a model of children's emotion regulation (ER) as a moderator of the link between maternal depression and child internalizing problems. Participants were 78 children (ages 4 to 7), including 45 children of mothers with a history of childhood-onset depression (COD) and 33 children of mothers who had never been depressed. ER was assessed observationally during a laboratory mood induction. ER behaviors were empirically reduced into 3 categories: (a) negative focus on delay, (b) positive reward anticipation, and (c) behavioral distraction. Linear mixed models indicated that positiv
