Bridging Equity Gaps in Maternal and NCD Services: Policy Priorities for Bangladesh's Evolving Health Landscape.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, Bangladesh has made significant gains in maternal and child health, driven by investments in community-based services, education, and targeted public health interventions. However, disparities in service access and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to undermine the promise of universal and equitable care. OBJECTIVE: This perspective provides a policy-oriented, interceptive synthesis of progress and persistent gaps in five critical domains-maternal care, child nutrition, family planning, immunization, and hypertension-by analyzing p

Impacts of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on African Public Health Systems.

The enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) in July 2025 represents a fundamental shift in United States global health financing, with significant implications for African public health systems. For more than three decades, US development assistance for health particularly through initiatives such as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the President's Malaria Initiative, and maternal and child health programs-has been central to disease control and health system strengthening across sub-Saharan Africa. OBBBA institutionalizes reduced funding baselines under an

[Singer--and no end in sight? Or: can severely handicapped patients be "persons"?].

Children with profound disablement (hence, in conclusion, all individuals with profound mental retardation) are denied to possess personhood by the bioethicist Peter Singer, on the ground that they lack the capability of reason, of consciousness of self, and of self-determination. The article seeks to point out that Singer's concept of the person is too narrow: the very disposition for development of these abilities in itself is a constituent of personhood. Human social and spiritual interwovenness is considered another essential constituent. Finally, the fundamental difference between "life w

Behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized children in middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Experience in institutional/orphanage care has been linked to increased mental health problems. Research suggests that children adopted from institutions experience specific difficulties related to inattention/overactivity. Evidence of internalizing and conduct problems relative to non-adopted peers has been found in early childhood and early adolescence, but problems may not differ from other adopted children. This study clarifies the understanding of behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized (PI) children during middle childhood. METHODS: Eight- to eleven-year-

Survivors' lived experiences of posttraumatic growth after institutional childhood abuse: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Institutional childhood abuse (ICA) represents a chronic and severe form of childhood maltreatment and is associated with a host of adverse outcomes. However, there is some evidence to suggest that survivors can also experience positive psychological change after institutional childhood abuse and neglect. OBJECTIVE: To examine the lived experiences of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in adult survivors of institutional childhood abuse. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Nine survivors of historical institutional abuse in Ireland ranging in age from 41 to 75 years (M = 60.5). METHOD: Semi-struc

Review of the Current Knowledge of Reactive Attachment Disorder.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD), classified under Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders in the DSM-5 manual, is a childhood psychiatric illness due to familial or social neglect or due to maltreatment. It is characterized by an inhibited and withdrawn social and emotional behavior toward an adult caregiver, typically before the age of 5. Neurobiological changes in patients with RAD have been shown to be substantially significant with features such as loss of grey matter volume and neurotransmitter deficiencies that not only impact the ability to form healthy attachments but also increase th

Predicting long-term outcomes for children affected by HIV and AIDS: perspectives from the scientific study of children's development.

The immediate and short-term consequences of adult HIV for affected children are well documented. Little research has examined the long-term implications of childhood adversity stemming from caregiver HIV infection. Through overviews provided by experts in the field, together with an iterative process of consultation and refinement, we have extracted insights from the broader field of child development of relevance to predicting the long-term consequences to children affected by HIV and AIDS. We focus on what is known about the impact of adversities similar to those experienced by HIV-affected

ASRHR in Ethiopia: reviewing progress over the last 20 years and looking ahead to the next 10 years.

Over the last two decades, improvements in Ethiopia's socio-economic context, the prioritization of health and development in the national agenda, and ambitious national health and development policies and programmes have contributed to improvements in the living standards and well-being of the population as a whole including adolescents. Improvements have occurred in a number of health outcomes, for example reduction in levels of harmful practices i.e., in child marriage and female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), reduction in adolescent childbearing, increase in positive health behaviours

Epidemiology of streptococcal pyoderma in an orphanage community of a tropical country.

A group of 89 children residing in an orphanage, situated about 12 km from Vellore town, Tamil Nadu, India, were surveyed for streptococcal pyoderma, every month, from October 1976 through to December 1978. The prevalence rate of pyoderma as defined by the isolation of group A streptococci (GAS) was 10.1% with monthly variations from 2.1% to 17.1%. Three meteorological data, namely, temperature, humidity and rainfall did not show any significant relationship with seasonal patterns of pyoderma. However, a hot and humid climate, prevalent for most of the year in Vellore, may be linked to the end

Institutional screening for the fragile X syndrome.

Cytogenetic screening of mentally retarded patients for the fragile X (fra[X]) chromosome is helpful in identifying individuals who could benefit from genetic counseling and treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated a prevalence of the fra(X) syndrome as high as 6% in institutionalized retarded males. The physical and behavioral predictors of positive findings from cytogenetic testing have not been clarified, since many features of the fra(X) syndrome are found in other retarded populations. We performed physical and cytogenetic examinations on 440 patients at the Wheat Ridge (Colo) Region
