Use of point-of-care ultrasound to evaluate for penile fracture in a child.

Penile fracture is a urologic emergency requiring prompt surgical intervention. Ultrasound may help clarify the diagnosis in cases of uncertain history and physical examination. The author presents a case of suspected pediatric penile fracture, in which point-of-care ultrasound helped to rule out the condition and facilitated disposition of the patient.

Cardiac intensive care for the neonate and child after cardiac surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The focus of postoperative care in the pediatric patient with congenital heart disease has become a reduction in length of stay and morbidity. This review will discuss strategies to achieve this goal and recent studies to support current practices. RECENT FINDINGS: Most agree that prolongation of the length of stay following a cardiac surgery contributes to morbidity. Postoperative feeding difficulty, hyperglycemia, acute kidney injury, fluid overload, and prolonged intubation contribute significantly to length of stay. SUMMARY: Postoperative care of the neonate and child

Care for child development: basic science rationale and effects of interventions.

The past few years have witnessed increasing interest in devising programs to enhance early childhood development. We review current understandings of brain development, recent advances in this field, and their implications for clinical interventions. An expanding body of basic science laboratory data demonstrates that several interventions, including environmental enrichment, level of parental interaction, erythropoietin, antidepressants, transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, hypothermia, nutritional supplements, and stem cells, can enhance cerebral plast

Physical and mental health of mothers caring for a child with Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to investigate the physical and mental health of mothers who care for a child with Rett syndrome. Improved maternal and child health care access in a rural community.

Few studies have measured the extent to which expansion of health services for pregnant women and children in poor rural communities improves access to care and health status. This paper describes an underserved rural community in which health care initiatives increased access to comprehensive care. Over a three-year period, use of preventive services increased, whereas emergency room visits and hospitalizations at the community hospital decreased. Low birthweight, risk of congenital syphilis and childhood tuberculosis, and child mortality all decreased. Provision of comprehensive services was

[Family planning and maternal and child care in present-day society].

The evidence is provided of a close relationship between the features of women's reproductive behaviour, their health status and the health of their children: the lack of rational planning child-birth results in increasing maternal and infant mortality rates, prematurity, birth of unwanted children. The use of abortions as one of the basic means of birth control produces a negative effect, i.e. they are a frequent cause of sterility, gynaecological diseases, complicated future pregnancies and deliveries. There is a description of the priority tasks and conditions for the effective introduction

Infections in child day care centers as they relate to internal medicine.

Internists should be aware of the increased frequency of most communicable diseases among parents and child care providers exposed to children attending child day care centers. Episodes of shigellosis and hepatitis A among adults in contact with children in day care centers should be promptly reported to public health authorities, since they may indicate the presence of a day care center outbreak for which effective control measures are available. Although effective treatment or intervention is limited or not available for many other infections acquired by adults from children in day care cent
