Modeling the mechanisms through which conditions of poverty are associated with late language emergence in young children.

Children growing up in households that undergo economic hardship experience relatively higher rates of language delay and disorder compared to those growing up in homes with more socioeconomic means. The Family Stress Model provides a conceptual model for understanding how experiencing poverty may influence late language emergence (LLE; aka late talking) in young children at age two years. Using a five-dimensional model, we explore the hypothesis that economic hardship and pressure influence parental psychological distress and relationship conflict, in turn leading to disrupted parenting, whic

Frequent Alcohol Use of Adolescents in Low-Income Families: Application of the Multiple Disadvantage Model.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated relationships between low-income adolescent drinkers' frequent alcohol use and five factors: social disorganization, social structural, social integration, mental health, and access to healthcare. OBJECTIVE: A sample of 1,256 low-income adolescent drinkers and caregivers were extracted from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. RESULTS: Logistic regression yielded results showing adolescent drinkers' weekly drinking to be associated positively with Hispanic adolescents, drinking peers, adolescents' depression/anxiety, and caregiver's daily drin

Social protection as a strategy for HIV prevention, education promotion and child marriage reduction among adolescents: a cross-sectional population-based study in Lesotho.

BACKGROUND: Lesotho's government has shown consistent efforts to implement social protection programmes. However, while recent evidence established a positive causal relationship between some of these programmes and food security there is little evidence on the extent to which these initiatives are associated with better educational and sexual and reproductive health outcomes among vulnerable adolescents in Lesotho. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The study uses cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the 2018 Lesotho Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. Our research examined the as

A handful of 'antipoverty' vaccines exist for neglected diseases, but the world's poorest billion people need more.

So-called neglected tropical diseases are the most common infections of the world's poor. Almost all of the "bottom billion"--the 1.4 billion people who live below the poverty level defined by the World Bank--suffer from one or more neglected diseases including hookworm infection, sleeping sickness, or Chagas disease. These diseases are actually a cause of poverty because of their adverse effects on child growth and development and worker productivity. Vaccines to combat such diseases have come to be known as "antipoverty vaccines." Unfortunately, the recent surge in the development and delive

Prediction of sexual, emotional, and physical maltreatment and mental health outcomes in a longitudinal cohort of 290 adolescent women.

A longitudinal study of 290 Canadian females measured factors at ages 3, 6, 9, and 13 that predicted emotional, physical, and sexual maltreatment occurring up to the age of 16. Significant factors predicting maltreatment were early neurological status and difficult temperament, cognitive status, maternal stress, chronic poverty, negative family climate, weak bonding, and family disruption. There was complex interplay between these factors in predicting both maltreatment status and poor mental health at age 17. Sexual abuse retained a significant link with emotional (but not conduct) problems w

Is a national program to prevent sickle cell disease possible?

There is no specific therapy for sickle cell disease, and there is no evidence that sickle hemoglobin screening by conventional methods will lead to a significant reduction in the number of children with sickle cell disease. Thus it follows that if there is to be a national program to prevent sickle cell disease, the only recourse is one based on prenatal diagnosis and selective abortion of affected embryos or fetuses. Present-day dire poverty and callous health care public policies lead to the inescapable conclusion that a concerted attempt to alleviate poverty and its consequent adverse effe

Dermatosis in a child with kwashiorkor secondary to food aversion.

Kwashiorkor is a common affliction of children worldwide. It occurs less often in developed countries, but has been reported under a variety of circumstances, including poverty, neurologic disease, and malabsorption. Because of its rare occurrence in the United States and because the affected child has an edematous rather than wasted appearance, physicians often do not consider it as a diagnostic entity. This article describes a case of kwashiorkor in a child with food aversion that manifested as "flaky paint dermatitis." Our discussion will attempt to delineate underlying conditions that may

Trends in selected birth defects among parents from below poverty line population in Karnataka during 2010-2020.

The aim of the study is to reveal the common birth defects among parents of newborns belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category in Karnataka state (South India) by analyzing Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust data. In the last 10 years, 3672 kids in BPL families have been born with various birth abnormalities. It is found that 50.3% of newborns have anorectal malformations, 33.1% have hypospadias, 6.0% have diaphragmatic hernia, 5.1% have esophageal atresia, and 2.8% have intestinal atresia and obstruct. As a parent's age rises, the likelihood of having a child with birth abnormalities rais

FOOD NEGLECT AND INFANT DEVELOPMENT.

The impact of food insecurity on child development in the general U.S. population is well-established, yet little is known about the harm of food neglect relative to other types of maltreatment. Due to the harmful physiological impact of inadequate nutrients and the social impact of food-related stress, it was hypothesized that food neglect would be more likely to impair infant cognitive and language development than physical abuse, sexual abuse, and other forms of neglect. Families of infants (N = 1,951) investigated by Child Protective Services were studied using the second cohort of the Nat

Reasons for poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy postnatally in HIV-1 infected women treated for their own health: experiences from the Mitra Plus study in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In a study of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) by triple antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (the Mitra Plus study), retrospective viral load testing revealed a high and increasing frequency of detectable viral load during follow-up for two years postnatally in women given continuous ART for their own health suggesting poor adherence. This study explored women's own perceived barriers to adherence to ART post-delivery so as to identify ways to facilitate better drug adherence among women in need of ART for their own health. METHODS: Sem

Millennium Development Goals progress: a perspective from sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa is a highly diverse geo-political region. Any brief discussion of the progress made over the last 15 years towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will therefore not do justice to the true complexity of context and events. Our focus will be MDG4-to reduce child mortality by 66% from 1990 levels. We will touch briefly on MDG1, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, MDG2, to achieve universal primary education, and MDG5, to improve maternal health, which are inextricably linked with child well-being. We will also draw on an eclectic mix of additional global indicator

Short-term and long-term associations between household wealth and physical growth: a cross-comparative analysis of children from four low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Stunting, a form of anthropometric failure, disproportionately affects children in developing countries with a higher burden on children living in poverty. How early life deprivation affects physical growth over various life stages is less well-known. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the short- and long-run associations between household wealth in early life with physical growth in childhood in four low- and middle-income countries to understand the persistent implications of early life conditions of poverty and resource constraints on physical growth. DESIGN: Longitudinal study of eigh

The long-term effectiveness of the Family Check-Up on school-age conduct problems: Moderation by neighborhood deprivation.

Several studies suggest that neighborhood deprivation is a unique risk factor in child and adolescent development of problem behavior. We sought to examine whether previously established intervention effects of the Family Check-Up (FCU) on child conduct problems at age 7.5 would persist through age 9.5, and whether neighborhood deprivation would moderate these effects. In addition, we examined whether improvements in parent-child interaction during early childhood associated with the FCU would be related to later reductions in child aggression among families living in the highest risk neighbor

Drivers of child marriages for girls: A prospective study in a low-income African setting.

Child marriage has adverse consequences for young girls. Cross-sectional research has highlighted several potential drivers of early marriage. We analyse drivers of child marriage using longitudinal data from rural Malawi, where rates of child marriage are among the highest in the world despite being illegal. Estimates from survival models show that 26% of girls in our sample marry before age 18. Importantly, girls report high decision-making autonomy vis-à-vis the decision to marry. We use multivariate Cox proportional hazard models to explore the role of 1) poverty and economic factors, 2) o

The Impact of Housing Instability on Child Maltreatment: A Causal Investigation.

More than a half million children are confirmed as victims of maltreatment by the child welfare system each year. Children from unstably housed families are over-represented in child mal-treatment reports, and a growing body of evidence links housing problems to maltreatment and Child Protective Services (CPS); investigation. The present study applies two propensity score analysis approaches-greedy matching and propensity score weighting-to data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study to move toward a causal explanation of child mal-treatment behaviors among mothers in low-income

Risk and protective factors for physical and sexual abuse of children and adolescents in Africa: a review and implications for practice.

There is now conclusive evidence of the major and long-lasting negative effects of physical and sexual abuse on children. Within Africa, studies consistently report high rates of child abuse, with prevalence as high as 64%. However, to date, there has been no review of factors associated with physical and sexual child abuse and polyvictimization in Africa. This review identified 23 quantitative studies, all of which showed high levels of child abuse in varying samples of children and adults. Although studies were very heterogeneous, a range of correlates of abuse at different levels of the Mod

Child welfare involvement of mothers with mental health issues.

Many mothers with mental health issues are caught up in the child protection system and face the prospect of having their children removed from their care. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence and outcomes for mothers with mental health issues and their children in child maltreatment cases opened for investigation in Canada. The method was secondary analysis of the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2003) core data. This CIS-2003 contains process and outcome data on a nationally representative sample of 11,652 child maltreatment investigations. Mater

Health-related quality of life among urban children living in poverty.

Poverty is one of the challenges and barriers to children's well-being. Although studies have sought to understand many aspects of children's quality of life, there is still an urgency to comprehend Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among children of the urban poor. Therefore, concentrating on urban poverty in Malaysia, the study aims to investigate the issue by comprehensively analysing how gender, age conceptualised as adolescent category, number of siblings, internet access, and the extent of family healthy living style affect the children's HRQoL measured as psychological, physical, f

Contrasted life trajectories: reconstituting the main population exposomes in French Guiana.

In French Guiana, life expectancy is between 2 and 3 years below that of France, reflecting differences in mortality rates that are largely sensitive to primary healthcare and thus preventable. However, because poverty affects half of the population in French Guiana, global measurements of life expectancy presumably conflate at least two distinct situations: persons who have similar life expectancies as in mainland France and persons living in precariousness who have far greater mortality rates than their wealthier counterparts. We thus aimed to synthesize what is known about statistical regul

The Full Picture: Incorporating Ecological Factors When Conducting Developmental Screening with Young Children Experiencing Homelessness.

Conducting a neurodevelopmental screening without considering ecological factors is insufficient and may underestimate the actual risk to development for children living in poverty. This article describes ecological risk factors among a nationwide sample (n = 231) of young children experiencing homelessness. Researchers examined rates of health care access and continuity, food insecurity, lead exposure, ACEs, and access to safe places to play using a new ecological screening tool developed for the population. Children in the sample experienced high rates of food insecurity, faced significant c
