Social skills and behavior problems in children with disabilities with and without siblings.

This study examined social skills and behavior of children with disabilities (CWD) and the impact of siblings on these behaviors. Eighty-five CWD diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder only (ADHD-o), Learning Disability or Learning Problems (LD/LP), ADHD and LD combined (ADHD/LD) or Spina Bifida (SB) and their siblings were evaluated using standardized social skills and behavior rating scales. The ADHD-o group had significantly lower social skills and more behavior problems than the other groups. There was no recognized effect of the sibling relationship on the social skills a

Central auditory processing ability in children with ADHD with and without learning disabilities.

A few studies have shown more central auditory processing deficits in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than in nondisabled children. Because these studies failed to screen participants with ADHD for learning disabilities (LD), it is not clear whether these deficits are correlates of ADHD or LD or both. In the present study, the central auditory processing ability of children with ADHD, ADHD with LD, and no disabilities was examined. Results indicated lower central auditory processing ability, and significant correlations between reading and ADHD symptoms and readin

Gamification strategies that promote leisure participation in children and youth with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Participation in leisure activities is important for childhood development; however, youth with disabilities (YWD) experience participation limitations due to various barriers, including a lack of information about available adaptive and inclusive leisure activities. The Jooay mobile app, addresses this barrier by providing YWD, parents, and clinicians with information about adaptive and leisure activities in their neighborhoods across Canada. Game-like features, known as gamification, can enhance user engagement with mobile technologies and support health behavior change. OBJECTI

Evaluation of children with mild intellectual disabilities' self-perceptions of family functioning.

While the influence of family on individuals with intellectual disabilities is acknowledged, there remains a limited understanding of their perceptions of family. Gaining insight into these perceptions is crucial for developing effective support initiatives. This study examined the perspectives of 18 high school students with mild intellectual disabilities attending Turkish public schools during the 2023-2024 academic year. Through semi-structured interviews and content analysis, themes emerged regarding students' views on family roles, relationships and emotions. Students predominantly define

A Call for Inclusion: Children With Intellectual Disabilities in Trauma Treatment Research.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disabilities (ID) experience disparities in mental health care despite experiencing increased exposure to trauma such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Studies have suggested that the exclusion of people with ID from medical research may contribute to disparities in health care. It is currently unknown to what extent children with ID are excluded from trauma treatment research. METHODS: All randomised controlled trials (RCTs) (n = 62) included in the most up-to-date International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) clinical care guideline

Vitamin D deficiency in children with severe disabilities under limited ultraviolet exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Nutritional prevention of osteoporosis management is an important issue for children with severe disabilities. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that started in 2020, children admitted to institutions had fewer opportunities for ultraviolet (UV) exposure owing to restrictions on attending school and going out. Hence, the vitamin D (VD) status of these children has been a cause of concern. This study aimed to assess the correlation between VD intake and VD status among children with severe disabilities who had limited UV exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

The relationship between phonological processing and arithmetic in children with learning disabilities.

Phonological processing skills have not only been shown to be important for reading skills, but also for arithmetic skills. Specifically, previous research in typically developing children has suggested that phonological processing skills may be more closely related to arithmetic problems that are solved through fact retrieval (e.g., remembering the solution from memory) than procedural computation (e.g., counting). However, the relationship between phonological processing and arithmetic in children with learning disabilities (LDs) has not been investigated. Yet, understanding these relationsh

Improving English reading fluency and comprehension for children with reading fluency disabilities.

In the English language, students who read words accurately but have impairments in reading fluency are under-studied. The associated difficulties they have with comprehending text make it particularly important to delineate effective interventions for these students. Counter to suggestions that these readers need interventions focused on text reading, we examined the effects of a decoding-focused intervention. The intervention targeted decoding-related skills, including speeded training on sublexical spelling patterns. We examined the efficacy of this program for students with fluency-defined

Comparison of interventions to treat prompt dependence for children with developmental disabilities.

Prior research has examined interventions to prevent prompt dependence from occurring during the training of novel skills. Nevertheless, the relative efficacy and efficiency of different intervention procedures may be idiosyncratic across learners, suggesting the potential benefit of an individualized assessment. The purpose of the current study was to extend the literature on prompt dependence by comparing interventions for 3 participants with developmental disabilities who consistently engaged in correct responses following prompts but did not perform tasks independently. We compared the eff

Psychological and physical violence towards children with disabilities in Finland and Sweden.

This article describes psychological aggression and physical violence by Swedish and Finnish mothers ( N = 3420) towards their 0- to 12-year-old children with disabilities ( N = 286) by comparing such behaviour with the mothers of children without disabilities ( N = 3134). The survey data are based on representative samples from Finland and Sweden of mothers' reports of their behaviour towards their child in conflict situations. Mothers of children with disabilities reported more psychological aggression towards their child than did mothers of children without disabilities. Mothers used psycho

Education of children with disabilities in New Delhi: When does exclusion occur?

BACKGROUND: In the new Sustainable Development Goal 4, quality of education defined as equity and inclusion alongside traditional learning outcomes, has replaced the narrow goal of access to primary education stipulated in the Millennium Development Goal 2. Since 2000, considerable progress has been made towards improving access to school for children in India, yet questions remain regarding not just children with disabilities' access and acquisition of basic learning skills, but also completion of learning cycles. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Between November, 2, 2011 and June 20th 2012, we intervi
