Conduction velocity in spinal descending pathways of baro- and chemoreceptor reflex.

Activity in the white rami T3 and L2 or 3 has been recorded and averaged with respect to excitation of the carotid sinus baroreceptor afferents produced by the pulsatile blood pressure (baroreceptor reflex) and with respect to brief trains of electrical stimuli exciting low threshold chemoreceptor afferents in the left carotid sinus nerve (chemoreceptor reflex). Experiments were performed on chloralose anaesthetized cats with both vago-depressor nerves cut. From the latency difference between the onset of the responses at the thoracic and their arrival at the lumbar level the spinal conduction

Etiology of the negative chronotropic responses to transient coronary artery occlusion in the anesthetized rhesus monkey.

Etiology of the negative chronotropic response to coronary artery occlusion was studied in chloralose-anesthetized monkeys. One-minute occlusion of the circumflex (CIRC) coronary artery resulted in marked negative chronotropic responses and consistent alterations in atrial electrograms. These responses were dependent on interruption of flow to a small proximal CIRC branch, and postmortem examination revealed that it perfused the sinus node region. The negative chronotropic response was not dependent on any apparent neural reflexes because it was not affected by autonomic blockade. Coronary art

The role of anesthesia and catecholamines in the renal response to mild hemorrhage.

The role of the sympathoadrenal system in the renal response to mild hemorrhage was investigated in animals anesthetized with either sodium pentobarbital (Group I) or alpha-chloralose (Group II). Significantly greater decreases in renal blood flow (RBF) and increases in renal vascular resistance (RVR) were seen after hemorrhage in Group II than in Group I. Concomitant with these changes were increases both in circulating catecholamines and plasma renin activities. In Group II, however, the rise in plasma epinephrine was also significantly higher than in Group I. Additional studies were perform

Mu opiate receptor antagonist blocks electroacupuncture inhibition on noxious blood pressure response in rabbits.

A pressor blood pressure response was elicited by strong electric shock stimulation of the front paw in rabbits anesthetized with chloralose and urethane, immobilized by gallamine triethiodide and maintained by artificial ventilation. The pressor response showed a gradual decline in 3-4 successive trials. Naloxone or TCTAP, a specific mu receptor antagonist, administered intraventricularly (icv) at that time could facilitate the pressor response (n = 8, P < 0.02; n = 7, P < 0.01), suggesting the involvement of mu receptors in the declination of the pressor response. Electroacupuncture could in

Properties of postganglionic sympathetic neurons with axons in phrenic nerve.

The aim of the study was to test the reflex and resting properties of postganglionic sympathetic neurons with axons located in the right phrenic nerve. The experiments have been performed on chloralose-anesthetized cats with both vago-aortic nerves cut. The somata or the postganglionic sympathetic neurons were located in the stellate ganglion. Axons of these neurons passed through the upper and lower phrenic nerve roots and through the phrenic nerve itself. The presence of cardiac and respiratory rhythmicities was detected in the activity of the phrenic postganglionic sympathetic neurons. Hype

Some aspects of a study of habituation in visceral systems.

The general regularities of habituation in visceral systems according to the Thompson-Spencer criteria were investigated in acute experiments on chloralose-narcotized cats. Changes in systemic reactions (blood pressure and heart rate) and dynamics of neuronal activity in the medulla oblongata and cerebral cortex to repeated long stimulation of visceral (splanchnic and mesenteric) nerves were used as indicators of habituation. It was established that habituation in visceral systems develops more easily in the projection areas of the cortex than in the nuclei of the medulla oblongata. A comparis

Analgesic potencies of non-narcotic, narcotic and anesthetic drugs as determined by the bradykinin-induced biting-like responses in rats.

Aversive (nociceptive) biting-like responses induced by micro-application of bradykinin solution onto rat tooth pulp were dose-dependently suppressed by non-narcotic drugs such as baclofen and lidocaine as well as carbamazepine and phenytoin, which are employed for clinical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. The potency order of these drugs on a molar basis is baclofen (4.20) greater than carbamazepine (1.00) greater than lidocaine (0.94) greater than phenytoin (0.19). Such responses were also inhibited by morphine, pentazocine and cyclazocine (potency ratio of the three general analgesics, 1.

Effects on nociceptive threshold and blood pressure of intrathecally administered morphine and alpha-adrenergic agonists.

In the present experiments, the time course of the analgesic response (tail flick in rats, skin twitch in cat) and blood pressure effects of intrathecally administered morphine and the alpha-agonists, clonidine and ST-91 were examined in rats and cats. The clonidine analogue, ST-91 has approximately 1/50 the lipid solubility of clonidine. Intrathecally administered morphine and morphine followed by naloxone had no effect on resting blood pressure in unanaesthetized cats and in rats and cats anaesthetized with chloralose-urethane. Inactive when given systemically, ST-91 had a powerful antinocic

The influence of trichloroethylene and related drugs on the vestibular system.

A previously described experimental model for studying the effect of industrial solvents on the vestibular system of rabbits has been applied to trichloroethylene. Estimation of trichloroethylene and its metabolites in blood and cerebrospinal fluid was performed by gas chromatography. Vestibular function was studied by recording nystagmus, induced by positional changes or accelerated rotation. At blood levels of trichloroethylene above 30 p.p.m. "positional nystagmus" develops. Two metabolites of trichloroethylene, chloral hydrate and trichloroethanol, which are known as central nervous system

The state of urethral musculature during the detrusor areflexia after spinal cord transection.

The state of the urethral musculature was studied using the urethral pressure profile and electromyographic recording in periurethral striated muscle. In dogs under chloralose anesthesia a micturition reflex could be elicited by bladder distension and somatic reflexes could be elicited by various stimuli. Both the urethral profile and electromyographic activity could be recorded immediately after surgical transection of the spinal cord between T2 and T8 but the bladder remained areflexic for more than 12 hr. Pharmacologic analysis of the urethral pressure profile revealed a substantial contrib

The effects of intra-arterial and intraportal injections of vasopressin on the simultaneously perfused hepatic arterial and portal venous vascular beds of the dog.

The hepatic arterial and hepatic portal venous vascular beds of the chloralose-urethane anesthetized dog were perfused simultaneously in situ. Vasopressin (10 mU = 1 unit) was injected in graded increasing doses into the hepatic artery and into the portal vein. Both intra-arterial and intraportal vasopressin elicited both hepatic arterial vasoconstriction and hepatic venous dilation; the delay in onset of both hepatic vascular effects was significantly shorter than that for any succeeding systemic effects (a rise in systemic arterial pressure and fall in heart rate), showing that they were not

Central mechanism of vasopressin-induced changes in antidiuretic hormone release.

1. Intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) administered vasopressin (0.001-1.0 u) in dogs anaesthetized with chloralose produced adose-dependent increase in urine flow with a concomitant decrease in the levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in jugular vein blood. 2. Higher doses of vasopressin (1.5-2.0 u, i.c.v) on the other hand had an antidiuretic effect and produced an increase in blood ADH level. 3. Pretreatment (i.c.v.) with a beta-adrenoceptor antagonist completely blocked the diuretic response of low doses of vasopressin (i.c.v.) but did not influence the antidiuretic response obtained with h

The projection of the vestibular nerve to the cerebral cortex in the cat.

1. The cerebral cortex in the cat has been examined for responses to contra-lateral vestibular nerve shocks and to natural stimuli.2. Stimulation of the nerve produces short latency (3.5 msec) surface positive responses in very restricted areas. Within these areas, unitary discharges occur during the equivalent negative phase below the surface.3. It has not been possible to evoke unitary activity in these areas by natural stimulation during light anaesthesia with pentobarbitone, chloralose or urethane.4. The distribution and properties of the shock evoked responses have been studied with speci

Sympathetic activity in the rat: effects of anaesthesia on noradrenaline kinetics.

Noradrenaline (NA) kinetics represent an effective tool for evaluating the activity of the sympathetic system: thus plasma NA concentration, spillover rate (SOR) and metabolic clearance rate (MC) were measured in the rat. The dilution technique was adapted and validated: pithing that caused mechanical destruction of the spinal cord was shown to reduce drastically NA-SOR and plasma NA concentration with no effect on NA-MC. NA-SOR and plasma NA concentration were restored within their normal limits when 2.5 Hz electrical stimulation of the sympathetic roots was superimposed. Normal values of NA

Actions of tetrahydropapaveroline on the cardiovascular system and skeletal muscles of the anaesthetized cat and on guinea-pig soleus muscle in vitro.

1. Tetrahydropapaveroline (THP) and isoprenaline have been compared for effects on heart rate, diastolic blood pressure and contractions of soleus and tibialis muscles in chloralose-anaesthetized cats and on in vitro guinea-pig soleus muscles. 2. All effects of THP were similar to those of isoprenaline. Maximal responses were the same and responses to both drugs were antagonized by propranolol. 3. THP produced an increase in heart rate, a fall in diastolic blood pressure and a decrease in the tension and degree of fusion of incomplete tetanic contractions of the soleus, being, respectively, 12

Cerebellar pressor response in the dog.

A fastigial pressor response has been elicited in the anesthetized mongrel dog. Stimulation within the rostral portions of this nucleus results in mean arterial pressure rises up to 150 mmHg above control. A proportional tachycardia is simultaneously evoked which may rapidly attain heart rates of 190 beats/min above control levels. Peak tachycardias immediately suside and often the heart rate declines below control values during stimulation while arterial pressure remains elevated. When either the carotid sinuses were isolated by ligation or a bilateral vagotomy was performed, the fastigial ta

Actions of carotid chemoreceptors on subretrofacial bulbospinal neurons in the cat.

Thirty-one barosensitive bulbospinal neurons were recorded from the subretrofacial (SRF) nucleus in eight chloralose-anaesthetised, paralysed cats. Close arterial injections of CO2-saturated saline were used to stimulate carotid body chemoreceptors. Seven neurons were abruptly excited and six neurons abruptly inhibited by chemoreceptor stimuli: these were primary responses, independent of changes in blood pressure or central respiratory drive (monitored from the phrenic nerve). A further eight neurons responded only indirectly to chemoreceptor stimuli, showing enhanced modulation of their acti

Anesthetic effects on tonic and reflex renal sympathetic nerve activity in awake cats.

Renal sympathetic nerve activity (RNA), arterial blood pressure (AP), and heart rate (HR) were simultaneously measured before and after administration of pentobarbital sodium (PB), chloralose (CHL), or urethan (URE) in conscious cats. We examined the time courses and magnitudes of the changes in RNA, AP, and HR over a period of 5 h under anesthesia with spontaneous or artificial respiration. In both respiratory conditions, PB initially decreased and then increased RNA, AP, and HR; CHL sustainedly increased RNA but had almost no effect on AP and HR. Under artificial respiration, URE transiently
