A Descriptive Study of Chlorhexidine as a Disinfectant in Cleft Palate Surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Chlorhexidine is seen as the golden standard of disinfectants. It is widely used to clean surgical sites; however, many studies indicate resistance of pathogens to chlorhexidine. One study indicated that pathogenic microorganisms were isolated from the soft palate cleft region in 57% of patients with facial clefts. The objectives of our study were to determine (1) if chlorhexidine application is effective in removing pathogens from the surgical site in these patients, and (2) if any pathogens are isolated, determine if they are resistant to other antimicrobials. DESIGN: A descript

Contact allergy to chlorhexidine in a tertiary dermatology clinic in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine is a widely used disinfectant in the healthcare setting and in cosmetic products. A high prevalence of chlorhexidine contact allergy was reported in Denmark in the 1980s (2.0-5.4% of patients patch tested). It is unknown whether the prevalence is still high, which products cause the contact allergy, and whether accidental re-exposure occurs in some patients. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of chlorhexidine contact allergy in a tertiary dermatology clinic in Denmark; to investigate whether patch testing with both chlorhexidine diacetate and chlorhexidine digluc

Are chlorhexidine-containing dressings safe for use with ventricular drainages?

The purpose of this report was to assess the safety and application of chlorhexidine (CHG)-containing dressings--shown to reduce central line infection rates markedly--for external ventricular drainages (EVDs) and lumbar drainages (LDs). Cerebrospinal fluid samples of patients receiving standard dressings and CHG-containing dressing (ten each) were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography for the presence of CHG. The application was evaluated. CHG was not detectable in all samples. The dressings' application for EVDs and LDs worked without problems. Thus, the use of CHG-containing dr

A case of anaphylaxis to chlorhexidine during digital rectal examination.

Chlorhexidine is widely used as an antiseptic and disinfectant in medical and nonmedical environments. Although the sensitization rate seems to be low, its ubiquitous use raises the possibility of sensitization in many patients and medical care workers. We describe a patient with anaphylaxis during digital rectal examination with chlorhexidine jelly. Urticaria, angioedema, dyspnea, and hypotension developed within a few minutes of the rectal examination. The patient fully recovered after treatment with epinephrine and corticosteroids. Skin tests for chlorhexidine were undertaken 5 weeks later,

Evaluation of the substantivity of chlorhexidine in association with sodium fluoride in vitro.

The efficacy of the fluoride-chlorhexidine association in the prevention of gingivitis and caries has been advocated for a number of years. The objective of the association of these therapeutic agents is a synergistic action. The aim of the present study was to determine the substantivity of chlorhexidine associated or not to sodium fluoride at different intervals of time, in vitro. Bovine enamel surfaces were treated with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate (Periogard--Colgate) or 0.05% sodium fluoride with 0.12% chlorhexidine (Duplak--Dentsply) solutions for one minute. Fragments were placed in di

A wound healing study of chlorhexidine digluconate in guinea pigs.

Formulations with and without chlorhexidine digluconate, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial, were tested for their effects on the healing of incisions and abrasions surgically induced in male guinea pigs. Formulations containing chlorhexidine were a skin cleanser formulation (4% w/v), a tinted tincture (0.5% w/v), and both 0.5 and 4% w/v aqueous solutions. Control materials were saline, and both the skin cleanser and the tincture formulations without chlorhexidine. Presurgical preparation was limited to closely clipping the hair and wiping each wound area with saline to remove loose hair, dander,

Sustained chlorhexidine susceptibility in clinical MRSA isolates despite recent exposure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: MRSA decolonization strategies are widely implemented to reduce the risk of invasive infections but rely heavily on the use of chlorhexidine. Reduced chlorhexidine susceptibility has been reported after widespread use in hospital settings. The objective of the study is to assess chlorhexidine susceptibility among clinical MRSA isolates and to investigate potential induction of reduced susceptibility following chlorhexidine exposure. METHODS: Ninety-five MRSA isolates from 77 patients of the University Hospital Zurich, treated between October 2021 and September 2022,

Chlorhexidine Gluconate and Hypersensitivity From 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate Mesh Dressings.

BACKGROUND: Both 2-octyl cyanoacrylate mesh dressings and chlorhexidine gluconate are independently associated with hypersensitivity. Residual chlorhexidine antiseptic trapped under an impermeable mesh dressing may synergistically contribute to skin reactions. We hypothesized that an enhanced washing protocol before dressing application would reduce the incidence of hypersensitivity. We secondarily compared delayed wound healing, infection, and sensitization from prior exposure with mesh dressings. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed 214 hip and knee arthroplasty patients receiving 2%
