Dissociation induced by cosmic rays of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and HCl on the surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) has been suggested as playing a significant role in causing the ozone hole. However, observed stratospheric CFC distributions are inconsistent with a destruction of CFC on PSC surfaces and no significant correlation exists between ozone levels and cosmic-ray activity inside the polar regions. Model simulations indicate that this mechanism can have only a limited impact on chemical ozone loss and thus on the recovery of stratospheric ozone.

Groups of 10 male Hartley guinea pigs were exposed to 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, or 0.1% (v/v) 1,1-Dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123) or 1.0% (v/v) halothane by inhalation for 4 hr. A cross-sectional clinical study of 99 workers engaged in degreasing with halogenated hydrocarbons has been carried out. Among 23 cleaners from one factory, all at the time using fluorocarbon 113, we found 3 persons with symptoms and signs of psychoorganic syndrome after heavy exposure to fluorocarbon 113 for 2 1/2-4 1/2 years. The possibility of developing psychoorganic syndrome from occupational exposure to fluorocarbon is discussed by presenting these 3 cases.

New approaches in the field of aerosol therapy are pointing into two directions. In one, chlorofluorocarbons are now beginning to make place for the hydrofluoroalkanes--which are non-destructive of the ozone layer--as propellants for use in metered-dose inhalers. On the other hand, the use and new development of dry powder inhalation devices are on the increase. In the future, systemic pharmacotherapy applied via aerosols will provide an important option for use not only in the field of pneumology, but also, for example, in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and for anticoagulation.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often comingled with low-level radioactive wastes (LLRW), but little is known about subsurface VOC emanations from LLRW landfills. The current study systematically quantified VOCs associated with LLRW over an 11-yr period at the USGS Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) in southwestern Nevada. In 1995, workers in a Korean electronic factory exhibited oligospermia or amenorrhea. We investigated the toxicity of 2-bromopropane used as an alternative to chlorofluorocarbons in the factory in animal experiments, and clarified that exposure to 2-bromopropane depletes spermatogenic cells in male rats and oocytes in female rats. We have optimized the analytical parameters of a homemade instrument for the simultaneous measurement of the chlorofluorocarbons CCl(2)F(2) (CFC-12), CCl(3)F (CFC-11) and C(2)Cl(3)F(3) (CFC-113) in seawater. Seawater samples are flame sealed into 60 ml glass ampoules avoiding any contact with the atmosphere and stored in cold, dark condition until analysis. Metered dose inhalers containing halogenated propellants may interfere with mass spectrometer quantitation of halogenated inhalation anesthetics. We identify the propellant(s) in a commercially available metered dose inhaler that caused erroneous mass spectrometer readings.
