A behavioral measure for spite.

Spite occurs when someone harms another individual at a personal cost to themselves. Spite is studied by evolutionary biologists and personality psychologists, but little behavioral spite research exists. A social discounting task was modified to determine whether repeated choices to spite a disliked person would decrease with social distance and/or increase as loss amount for the other disliked person increased. In Experiment 1, more than 50% of participants made at least one spiteful choice, resulting in less hypothetical rewards for themselves. Spite rates generally decreased hyperbolically

Consumers pay attention to ingredients on the front of a label: an eye tracking study.

Sunscreen is an important part of skin cancer prevention. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed numerous changes to sunscreen labeling including adding active ingredients to the front of a label. The purpose of the study was to identify and describe differences in attention between current label formatting and the proposed label formatting. Forty-seven participants were interviewed. Participants were presented with mock sunscreen labels that resembled current labeling or labeling based on the proposed FDA rule. While reading the labels, eye movements were recorded. Participants spent

Efficacy of Active Ingredients From the EPA 25(B) List in Reducing Attraction of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) to Humans.

Mosquitoes of the Aedes genus are vectors for dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses. Mosquito repellents are an effective way to prevent mosquito bites and reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. In the early 90s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a list of active ingredients that pose minimum risk to human health that can be used as pesticides or repellents without passing the EPA registration process. The present study examined the efficacy of 21 of the active ingredients listed by the EPA 25 (B) exempt list and five commercially available sprays th

Size-dependent avoidance of a strong magnetic anomaly in Caribbean spiny lobsters.

On a global scale, the geomagnetic field varies predictably across the Earth's surface, providing animals that migrate long distances with a reliable source of directional and positional information that can be used to guide their movements. In some locations, however, magnetic minerals in the Earth's crust generate an additional field that enhances or diminishes the overall field, resulting in unusually steep gradients of field intensity within a limited area. How animals respond to such magnetic anomalies is unclear. The Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus, is a benthic marine invertebr

Reward Size Informs Repeat-Switch Decisions and Strongly Modulates the Activity of Neurons in Parietal Cortex.

Behavior is guided by previous experience. Good, positive outcomes drive a repetition of a previous behavior or choice, whereas poor or bad outcomes lead to an avoidance. How these basic drives are implemented by the brain has been of primary interest to psychology and neuroscience. We engaged animals in a choice task in which the size of a reward outcome strongly governed the animals' subsequent decision whether to repeat or switch the previous choice. We recorded the discharge activity of neurons implicated in reward-based choice in 2 regions of parietal cortex. We found that the tendency to

Toward an empirical method for identifying matched stimulation for automatically reinforced behavior: a preliminary investigation.

The effects of noncontingent matched stimulation (NMS) and response blocking on a boy's stereotypic behavior were evaluated using a multiple schedule that contained three 15-min components (preintervention, intervention, and postintervention). Results showed that stereotypy was always higher after response blocking than before response blocking and was always lower after NMS than before NMS. These results suggest that response blocking may have produced deprivation for the product of stereotypy and that NMS may have provided stimulation that was similar to the product of stereotypy.

Measuring the effect of sex preference on fertility: the case of Korea.

Preferences for male or female children or a balanced number of sons and daughters are common throughout the world. The dominant preference is for male offspring, particularly in less developed countries. Strong son preference is often tempered, however, by a desire to have at least one child of each sex. In more developed countries a balance preference is more common, often together with a strong preference for the first child to be a son. Although it is usually assumed that sex preference can substantially influence fertility, some analysts argue that the effect is negligible. An intermediat

Three social-preference measures in PKU monkeys.

Of twenty-four one-year-old rhesus, half were brain damaged from excessive phenylalanine (PKU) administered either pre- or post-natally. When compared on three measures of affiliation--(a) a simultaneous forced-choice proximity circus test, (b) a sequential free-operant Butler-box test, and (c) a social group in a playroom--the duration measure of the circus gave the best differentiation between stimulus animals, the Butler box the poorest. Both types of PKU monkeys were found to strongly prefer familiar PKU monkeys, and controls to refer unfamiliar followed by familiar controls. This extends

Impulse control in Parkinson's disease: Distinct effects between action and choice.

Aside from typical motor symptoms, impulse control issues related to engaging in actions or decision-making can manifest in Parkinson's disease (PD). The lack of direct comparisons between impulsive action and impulsive choice domains hinders a comprehensive understanding of impaired impulse control in this population. Therefore, the current review integrates findings across behavioural measures of impulsive action and choice in PD samples, both on and off dopaminergic medication. The qualitative review of studies revealed a distinction between the two impulsivity domains in the context of PD.

Optimizing variables for contingency management among infant caregivers using a simulated purchase task.

Behavioral economics offers a framework for understanding choice making around public health concerns such as drug use and distracted driving. Such a framework could be beneficial to understanding caregiver choices related to arranging an infant sleep environment. Nonadherence to infant sleep safety guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics increases the risk of sleep-related infant deaths. The present study adopted a willingness-to-accept purchase task procedure, used in previous research to evaluate variables that predict abstaining from consuming alcohol, to evaluate intenti

Cognitive dynamics of intertemporal choice in gambling disorder.

Gambling Disorder (GD) is a behavioral addiction characterized by the persistence of recurrent gambling behaviors despite serious adverse consequences. One of the key features of GD is a marked inability to delay gratification and an overall impairment of decision-making mechanisms. Indeed, in intertemporal choice (ITC) tasks, GD patients usually display a marked tendency to prefer smaller-sooner over larger-later rewards (temporal discounting, TD). However, ITC represents a highly verbal/explicit measure, and as such it might not be sensitive to implicit decision biases. Here we sought to unc

Betting on Illusory Patterns: Probability Matching in Habitual Gamblers.

Why do people gamble? A large body of research suggests that cognitive distortions play an important role in pathological gambling. Many of these distortions are specific cases of a more general misperception of randomness, specifically of an illusory perception of patterns in random sequences. In this article, we provide further evidence for the assumption that gamblers are particularly prone to perceiving illusory patterns. In particular, we compared habitual gamblers to a matched sample of community members with regard to how much they exhibit the choice anomaly 'probability matching'. Prob

Does research into contraceptive method discontinuation address women's own reasons? A critical review.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the clinical and epidemiological literature addressing contraceptive method change or discontinuation and to assess whether the documented reasons reflected women's experiences. METHODS: Major databases including Medline and PsycINFO were searched using keywords related to contraception and discontinuation, adherence and satisfaction, for articles published between January 2003 and February 2013. Studies in developed countries that focused on women of reproductive age and reasons for method change or discontinuation were included. Reasons reported were categorised and ex

Pathological choice: the neuroscience of gambling and gambling addiction.

Gambling is pertinent to neuroscience research for at least two reasons. First, gambling is a naturalistic and pervasive example of risky decision making, and thus gambling games can provide a paradigm for the investigation of human choice behavior and "irrationality." Second, excessive gambling involvement (i.e., pathological gambling) is currently conceptualized as a behavioral addiction, and research on this condition may provide insights into addictive mechanisms in the absence of exogenous drug effects. This article is a summary of topics covered in a Society for Neuroscience minisymposiu

Hungry pigeons make suboptimal choices, less hungry pigeons do not.

Hungry animals will often choose suboptimally by being attracted to reliable signals for food that occur infrequently (they gamble) over less reliable signals for food that occur more often. That is, pigeons prefer an option that 50 % of the time provides them with a reliable signal for the appearance of food but 50 % of the time provides them with a reliable signal for the absence of food (overall 50 % reinforcement) over an alternative that always provides them with a signal for the appearance of food 75 % of the time (overall 75 % reinforcement). The pigeons appear to choose impulsively for

The coordination dynamics of economic decision making: a multilevel approach to social neuroeconomics.

The basic reciprocity between individual parts and collective organization constitutes a key scientific question spanning the biological and social sciences. Such reciprocity is accompanied by the absence of direct linkages between levels of description giving rise to what is often referred to as the aggregation or nonequivalence problem between levels of analysis. This issue is encountered both in neuroscience and economics. So far, in spite of being identified and extensively discussed in various (other) scientific fields, the problem of understanding the nature of the interactions and coord

Modification of slot-machine preferences through the use of a conditional discrimination paradigm.

The present experiment investigated the impact of contextually trained discriminations on gambling behavior. Nine recreational slot-machine players were initially exposed to concurrently available computerized slot machines that were each programmed on random-ratio schedules of reinforcement and differed only in color. All participants distributed responding equally across the two slot machines. A conditional discrimination procedure was then used to teach the contextual cues representing the arbitrary relations of "greater than" and "less than." Following contextual cue training, participants

A review of choice research with people with severe and profound developmental disabilities.

During the last 15-20 years, a significant amount of research has focused on the issue of choice among people affected by severe-profound developmental disabilities. Studies have been directed at (a) assessing the ability of those people to choose between different options and express preferences that could be used for reinforcement or occupational purposes, (b) building choice opportunities within those people's daily situations, and (c) evaluating the possible effects of choice making on those people's performance and behavior. This paper reviews the aforementioned studies and comments on th

An analysis of medical students' residency and specialty choices.

The contemporary geographic maldistribution of physicians and shortages in some specialty areas is a persistent problem facing United States federal and state wide health planners. This paper attempts to illustrate some of the formal and informal processes of the selection of specialties and residency programs based on a survey of senior students of 37 selected American medical schools at the time of the National Residency Matching Program in 1982. Results of a factor analysis on influences on specialty choice produced two major clusters of medical students; those predominantly influenced in s

Current Evidence on Dietary Patterns and Consumer Food Choices in the Context of Climate and Environmental Change: A Global Perspective-A Report from the Agriculture and Diet: Value Added for Nutrition, Translation, and Adaptation in a Global Ecology (ADVANTAGE) Project Working Group 2.

Climate and environmental change (CEC) are affecting food systems across the globe in myriad ways, yet there has historically been little focus on the role of CEC in influencing dietary patterns and consumer food choices. In this narrative review, we describe the global landscape of dietary patterns and consumer choice to set a baseline understanding of nutrition guidance and estimated food intake. Next, we consider trends in consumer choices across a pathway that includes consumer attitudes, knowledge, and preferences; food purchases and acquisition; food intake behaviors; and food waste. For
