Clear cell chondrosarcoma of the proximal femur with intrapelvic extension.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma is a rare tumor that can be easily confused with benign tumors. The aim of this report is to present a case that is rare, initially diagnosed as aneurysmal bone cyst and then chondroblastoma, and has an interesting extension pattern. A 41-year-old male patient was treated for an apparently benign cystic lesion of the right proximal femur by intralesional excision and bone grafting. The pathological diagnosis was aneurysmal bone cyst. Two years later, the patient presented with a pathological fracture at the same site and a total hip arthroplasty was performed. The pat

Ultrastructure of aneurysmal bone cyst.

The ultrastructure of 5 cases of primary aneurysmal bone cysts is described. The most frequent cells found are fibroblasts containing varying amounts of glycogen. Primitive mesenchymal cells in different stages of differentiation are seen. The foci of osteoid and bone originate through metaplastic changes of the spindle cell stroma. We feel that the fibroblastic proliferation and bone formation are manifestations of a reactive process. The giant cells are similar to those of other giant cell lesions of bone. A case of cystic chondroblastoma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst features was stud

Gene expression profiling identifies p63 as a diagnostic marker for giant cell tumor of the bone.

Giant cell tumor of the bone (GCTOB) is a primary bone tumor that occurs mainly in young adults and is capable of locally aggressive growth. Its histologic appearance can resemble a number of benign and malignant tumors but no useful diagnostic marker is known currently. To identify diagnostic markers for this tumor, global gene expression profiling using cDNA microarray was performed on 6 fresh-frozen GCTOB, 3 aneurysmal bone cysts, 4 fibrous dysplasias and 12 giant cell tumors of tendon sheath/diffuse-type giant cell tumors. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering separated the tumors based on

Follow-up study of cartilaginous bone tumors.

A series of clinical and pathological studies were performed on 74 cartilaginous bone tumors including osteochondromas, multiple cartilaginous exostoses, chondromas, chondromatoses, benign chondroblastomas and chondrosarcomas. Resection was adequate for the osteochondromas, and no recurrence was observed. Out of 14 multiple cartilaginous exostoses, three, all in flat bones showed malignant change. The predominant sites of chondroma were the finger and toe bones, and curettage and bone graft was adequate treatment. Neither recurrence nor malignant change was observed. Two cases of chondromatosi

Epigenetic lockdown of CDKN1A (p21) and CDKN2A (p16) characterises the neoplastic spindle cell component of giant cell tumours of bone.

Giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) comprises the eponymous osteoclastic multinucleated giant cells eliciting bone lysis, an H3F3A-mutated neoplastic mononucleated fibroblast-like cell population, and H3F3A wild-type mononucleated stromal cells. In this study, we characterised four new cell lines from GCTB. Furthermore, we compared the genome-wide DNA methylation profile of 13 such tumours and three further cell lines with giant cell-rich lesions comprising three H3F3B-mutated chondroblastomas, three USP6-rearranged aneurysmal bone cysts, three non-ossifying fibromas, two hyperparathyroidism-asso

[Aneurysmal bone cyst of the patella. A case report and literature review].

We report a case of an aneurysmal cyst localized in the patella of a 37-year-old man. The lesion was secondary to a chondroblastoma at six years follow-up after initial curettage and bone graft. It were no recurrence. Treatment of aneurysmal cysts depends on the degree of articular involvement. We made a detailed study of 11 cases of this rare localization of aneurysmal cysts reported in the literature.

Benign chondroid neoplasms of bone.

Benign cartilage lesions discussed in this article include osteochondroma (solitary, epiphyseal, and multiple), chondroblastoma, periosteal chondroma, and chondromyxoid fibroma. These lesions often demonstrate imaging appearances strongly suggesting the above diagnosis, particularly the "ring and arc" mineralization characteristic of cartilage lesions, which reflects their underlying pathology. This article emphasizes the imaging spectrum of these lesions with a multimodality approach.

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the femur: a case report with intra-cortical location.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is the least common benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 0.5 to 1% of all skeletal neoplasms. This subject was a 16-year-old female with a three-year history of pain involving the distal femoral metaphysis. This case showed an unusual feature: it was intracortical in location. Radiologic differential diagnosis included metaphyseal fibrous defect, periosteal chondroma, simple or aneurysmal bone cyst, and cortical abscess. On operation, the lesion filled the intracortical defect with whitish myxoid soft tissue, bulging into the adjacent soft tissue. Micros

Edema Surrounding Benign Tumors and Tumor-Like Lesions.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the incidence and significance of intra- and extra-osseous edema associated with benign tumors and tumor-like diseases. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 300 benign osseous tumors and tumor-like diseases diagnosed by pathology were retrospectively reviewed. Borderline tumors, cases associated with pathological fractures, and skull lesions were excluded from the study. Bone marrow and soft tissue edema were defined on T2WI with fat suppression on MRI in all cases. The incidence rate of edema in benign tumors and tumor-like diseases was determined using t

Sclerostin expression in bone tumours and tumour-like lesions.

AIMS: To assess the immunophenotypic and mRNA expression of sclerostin in human skeletal tissues and in a wide range of benign and malignant bone tumours and tumour-like lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sclerostin expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In lamellar and woven bone, there was strong sclerostin expression by osteocytes. Osteoblasts and other cell types in bone were negative. Hypertrophic chondrocytes in the growth plate and mineralized cartilage cells in zone 4 of hyaline articular cartilage strongly expressed sclerostin, b

Fluid-fluid levels in giant cell tumors of bone: report of two cases.

Fluid-fluid levels have been described in association with aneurysmal bone cysts, telangiectatic osteosarcoma, and a chondroblastoma. We report two cases of giant cell tumors of bone with fluid-fluid levels identified by computed tomography and, in one case, by magnetic resonance imaging. This finding has not previously been associated with giant cell tumors. The radiographic features of the fluid-fluid levels cannot be distinguished from those reported in other osseous neoplasms.

Exceptional Rare Giant Craniofacial Chondroid Tumor in Adult.

We present a rare case of giant soap bubble-shaped cystic lesion in the craniofacial region in an adult female. Histopathologic examination revealed the tumor consisted of 3 components including chondroblastoma, chondromyxoid fibroma, and hemorrhagic aneurysmal bone cyst. The present case is rare in terms of size, location, and histopathologic diagnosis, which is probably the result of underdeveloped health care in the remote place.

[Cartilage tumors : Pathology and radiomorphology].

Primary cartilage-forming tumors of the bone are frequent entities in the daily work of skeletal radiologists. This article describes the correlation of pathology and radiology in cartilage-forming skeletal tumors, in particular, enchondroma, osteochondroma, periosteal chondromas, chondroblastoma and various forms of chondrosarcoma. After reading, the radiologist should be able to deduce the different patterns of cartilage tumors on radiographs, CT, and MRI from the pathological aspects. Differentiation of enchondroma and chondrosarcoma is a frequent diagnostic challenge. Some imaging paramete

Calcified Chondroid Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

Calcified chondroid mesenchymal neoplasms (CCMN) represent a morphologic spectrum of related tumors. Historically, chondroid matrix or chondroblastoma-like features have been described in soft tissue chondroma, tenosynovial giant cell tumors (especially of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region), and in a subset of tophaceous pseudogout. Recently, these tumors have been found to share FN1-receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) fusions. This review discusses the clinical, morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features of CCMN. The distinction from morphologic mimics is also discusse

Clinical and Imaging Features of Tumors in the Scapula.

BACKGROUND: The scapula is a small irregular-shaped flat bone, which may suffer from a variety of tumors or tumor-like lesions. As the imaging manifestations are complex and changeable, correct imaging diagnosis is difficult. INTRODUCTION: At present, there are few related radiology literatures, and it is necessary to fully analyze the imaging signs of different types of benign and malignant tumors in scapula to guide clinical treatment. This study was to investigate clinical and imaging presentations of tumors and tumor- like lesions in the scapula so as to increase the diagnostic accuracy o

An Active Giant Cell Tumor of the Patella: A Case Report.

Primary neoplasms of the patella account for less than 1% of all primary bone tumors of the lower extremity, the most frequent of them being the giant cell tumor of bone, the chondroblastoma, and the aneurysmal bone cyst. Herein, we report the case of a 29-year-old woman with an active giant cell tumor of the patella (GCTP) with its clinical and radiological features and a brief review of the literature.

Pediatric Bone Tumors.

Pediatric bone lesions encompass a diverse spectrum of conditions, including benign neoplasms, cystic lesions, fibro-osseous lesions, and malignant tumors. This review highlights key diagnostic and management principles for commonly encountered non-sarcomatous lesions such as chondroblastoma, giant cell tumor, and aneurysmal bone cyst. Emphasis is placed on integrating clinical presentation, radiographic imaging, histopathological examination, and molecular diagnostics, such as H3.3 mutations and USP6 rearrangements, to refine differential diagnoses. A multidisciplinary approach is essential f

Benign and malignant cartilage tumors of bone and joint: their anatomic and theoretical basis with an emphasis on radiology, pathology and clinical biology. I. The intramedullary cartilage tumors.

We reviewed 845 cases of benign and 356 cases of malignant cartilaginous tumors from a total of 3067 primary bone tumors in our database. Benign cartilaginous lesions are unique because the epiphyseal plate has been implicated in the etiology of osteochondroma, enchondroma (single or multiple), periosteal chondromas and chondroblastoma. In the first part of this paper, we will review important clinical, radiologic and histologic features of intramedullary cartilaginous lesions in an attempt to support theories related to anatomic considerations and pathogenesis.

Proximal tibial epiphyseal intraosseous schwannoma: a rare entity.

Schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor most commonly located in the soft tissue. Occasionally, schwannomas involve osseous structures. The rarity of osseous involvement leads to omission of schwannoma from the initial differential diagnosis in the majority of cases. Intraosseous schwannomas arising in children have not been reported. We present the case of a schwannoma affecting the proximal tibial epiphysis in a growing child. Intraosseous schwannomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of lytic epiphyseal benign-appearing bone lesions in children. Its radiographic characteris
