Intraspinal periosteal chondroma in upper thoracic spine causing cord compression and myelopathy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Chondromas are slow-growing cartilage-forming benign tumors, rarely occurring in the spine. Generally, most spinal chondromas are asymptomatic; however, with slow progressive growth, these lesions may enlarge and expand and cause compressive neurological symptoms, resulting in radiculopathy or more commonly myelopathy due to direct neural compression. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 15-year-old male adolescent presented to Emergency Department with history of fall (slippage) on concrete ground while playing three months back. On neurological examination, the motor power in bilateral upp

Parotid gland chondroma masquerading as pleomorphic adenoma in fine needle aspiration cytology: A diagnostic challenge.

Chondroid neoplasm of parotid gland is extremely rare. Only a few cases of extraskeletal chondroma and one case of chondrosarcoma of parotid gland have been reported in the literature. The cytological features of parotid gland chondroma are not well documented. A 61-year female patient presented with a slow growing left preauricular mass for past 6 years. Computer tomography scan showed a well circumscribed mass in the superficial lobe of left parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed uniform chondrocytes embedded in a chondroid matrix, and was diagnosed as pleomorphic adeno

Cervical Periosteal Chondroma Causing Spinal Cord or Nerve Compression: 2 Case Reports and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Chondroma is a rare benign cartilaginous tumor that originates in chondrocytes and is commonly seen in the long bones; however, it infrequently occurs in the cervical spine. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: We report 2 patients with cervical periosteal chondroma that originated in the C2 vertebral body and C1 lamina as extramedullary tumors. The first patient was a 28-year-old man who presented with right upper extremity weakness and numbness. Cervical radiography revealed a bony tumor with evidence of severe spinal cord compression. The second patient was a 26-year-old woman with left occipita

A rare case of thyroid cartilage chondroma: diagnostic challenges and the role of multimodal imaging and histopathology.

Chondromas are rare benign cartilaginous tumours, typically arising in the small bones of the hands and feet. Laryngeal chondromas are exceptionally uncommon and account for a very small proportion of head and neck neoplasms. We present a case of a 72-year-old male referred with a painless, slowly enlarging right-sided neck mass. Multimodal imaging, including ultrasound, CT, and MRI, revealed a well-circumscribed lesion with internal calcification arising from the thyroid cartilage. Differential diagnoses included chondroma and low-grade chondrosarcoma. Initial cytological assessment was incon

Primary soft tissue chondroma of the anterior mediastinum: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

Anterior mediastinal soft tissue chondroma is an exceedingly rare benign tumor that poses a diagnostic challenge due to its overlapping imaging features with more common mediastinal masses. Accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure appropriate surgical management and avoid overtreatment of benign lesions. In the present case, a 36-year-old asymptomatic woman presented with a calcified anterior mediastinal mass incidentally detected on a routine chest computed tomography. Imaging showed a well-circumscribed, lobulated mass with punctate calcifications, suggestive of a benign etiology. The mass wa

Primary soft tissue chondroma of the posterior mediastinum: a rare case report and literature review.

A chondroma is a common benign cartilaginous tumor. However, a primary soft tissue chondroma of the posterior mediastinum is very rare. We herein report a case involving a 51-year-old man with a posterior mediastinal mass. The mass was dissected by thoracoscopy through the eighth intercostal space. Pathological examination led to a definitive diagnosis of a primary mediastinal chondroma with no criteria of malignancy. Preoperative diagnosis of a posterior mediastinal soft tissue chondroma is not easy because of its rarity and lack of typical features other than calcification. When a posterior

Soft tissue chondroma of the oral cavity: an extremely rare tumour localized on the hard palate.

Chondromas are benign cartilaginous tumors usually localized within the tubular bones of the extremities. Soft tissue chondromas (STCs) are rare and only few cases have been reported in the oral cavity. The present case documents the exceptional finding of a 12-year-standing STC of the hard palate of a 63-year-old man. The tumor measured approximately 6 cm in its larger size and it was radically excised through the use of a quantic resonance molecular (QRM) lancet. No recurrence was observed during 1-year follow-up. A concise review of the relevant literature is included in the present paper.

Transsphenoidal Removal of Retroclival Chondroma with Pituitary Transposition Manifesting as Repeated Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial chondromas are extremely rare and represent only 0.2% of all intracranial primary neoplasms. The histologic appearance lacks nuclear atypism and mitoses, and it usually shows low growth potential, although these benign features do not necessarily imply a good prognosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 44-year-old man was referred to our institution with a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). He had a history of SAH 5 years previously that was diagnosed as unknown etiology at another hospital. Head magnetic resonance imaging showed a large tumor located in the prepontine cistern and ext

Extraskeletal chondroma of the toe in a child with DICER1 tumor predisposition syndrome: support for a dominant negative mechanism.

DICER1 tumor predisposition syndrome is a pleiotropic disorder that gives rise to various mainly pediatric-onset lesions. We report an extraskeletal chondroma (EC) of the great toe occurring in a child who, unusually, carries a germline "hotspot" missense DICER1 variant rather than the more usual loss-of-function (LOF) variant. No heterozygous LOF allele was identified in the EC. We demonstrate this variant impairs 5p cleavage of precursor-miRNA (pre-miRNA) and competes with wild-type (WT) DICER1 protein for pre-miRNA processing. These results suggest a mechanism through which a germline RNase

Posttraumatic extraskeletal chondroma of the posterior neck: A systematic literature review on a rare finding and report of a case.

Extraskeletal chondromas (EC) are uncommon, benign cartilaginous tumours. Most common locations are upper and lower extremities. Location in the neck is extremely rare and reported only within the anterior compartment. Data are limited to just four case reports in the paediatric population. The first case of EC in neck's posterior compartment is described herein. EC present peculiar features on imaging. Aetiology is unclear; however, trauma has been suggested as possible causative mechanism. Treatment of choice is surgical excision; recurrence is not uncommon, but additional removal seems to b

[Intracranial chondroma arising from the skull base: two case reports featuring the image findings for differential diagnosis].

We reported two cases of intracranial skull base chondroma and discussed the differential diagnosis and the treatment strategies. The first case was a 39-year-old male who presented with left exophtalmos, visual loss and oculomotor disturbance. MRI showed a huge tumor occupying the bilateral cavernous sinus. Partial removal of the tumor was performed through the left orbitozygomatic subtemporal approach. The second case was a 54-year-old male who presented with left hemiparesis. MRI showed a brain stem infarction with a huge tumor located at the right middle fossa. Partial removal was performe

IDH1 and IDH2 mutations are frequent events in central chondrosarcoma and central and periosteal chondromas but not in other mesenchymal tumours.

Somatic mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) and IDH2 occur in gliomas and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Since patients with multiple enchondromas have occasionally been reported to have these conditions, we hypothesized that the same mutations would occur in cartilaginous neoplasms. Approximately 1200 mesenchymal tumours, including 220 cartilaginous tumours, 222 osteosarcomas and another ∼750 bone and soft tissue tumours, were screened for IDH1 R132 mutations, using Sequenom(®) mass spectrometry. Cartilaginous tumours and chondroblastic osteosarcomas, wild-type for IDH1 R132, were

Arthroscopic surgery for synovial chondroma of the subacromial bursa with non-traumatic shoulder subluxation complications: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Synovial chondromatosis is a disease originating from the synovium and characterized by the presence of metaplastic cartilaginous nodules in synovial cavities. The exact prevalence of synovial chondromatosis remains unknown, and the involvement of the shoulder joint is very rare. Synovial chondromatosis accompanied by subluxation of the humeral head without a history of trauma is rarely encountered, and to our knowledge, no published reports describe this condition. CASE SUMMARY: We present two cases of synovial chondromatosis in the shoulder joint, accompanied by subluxation of t

Periosteal chondroma of the distal tibia: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics and correlation with histological findings.

Periosteal chondroma is a rare benign hyaline cartilage neoplasm situated on the bone surface. This is the presentation of a unique case of periosteal chondroma arising in the left distal tibial metaphysis of a 25-year-old female patient with a history of antecedent trauma. The physical examination revealed swelling and tenderness in the anterolateral aspect of the left distal lower limb. Plain radiographs revealed a discernible soft tissue lesion with peripheral foci of mineralization. Computed tomography scans confirmed the presence of a surface-based mass with peripheral ossification and a
