Chondrosarcoma of the posterior fossa--case report.

The authors describe a case of well differentiated (grade I) chondrosarcoma in a 52-year-old male. The tumor originated in the posteromedial wall of the left petrous bone and extended into the posterior fossa and cervical spine. He showed impaired functions of the left VII to XII cranial nerves. Plain skull x-rays demonstrated erosion of the left petrous and occipital bones, with speckled calcifications. Computed tomography showed a huge mass of slightly high density with mushroom-like calcifications, which was poorly enhanced by contrast medium. Inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging c

[Compression of the median nerve by chondrosarcoma of the hand].

The authors report a case of median nerve compression due to a chondrosarcoma of the wrist. A 30 year-old right handed man complained of typical symptoms of median nerve compression. X-ray examination showed normal findings. During operation a more proximal lumbrical origin was the only abnormal finding. After nerve decompression pain relief was prompt. Six months later the patient again complained of symptoms of median nerve compression. Now X-ray examination showed scattered punctuate calcific densities of dystrophic calcification. The tumor was histologically shown to be a chondrosarcoma. I

Oncogenic osteomalacia associated with a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.

A patient with phosphaturic osteomalacia without chemical or pathological evidence of hyperparathyroidism and subnormal urinary cyclic AMP excretion was treated with vitamin D and phosphates for 9 months with partial improvement of osteomalacia, but not phosphaturia. Subsequent removal of a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the foot led to prompt resolution of phosphaturia and healing of the osteomalacia. Although 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D levels were not obtained before vitamin D therapy, the levels noted during continued severe phosphaturia preoperatively were not lower than those obtained several

Secondary Genetic Alterations in Extraskeletal Myxoid Chondrosarcoma.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis, characterized by recurrent gene fusions involving NR4A3 with various gene partners (EWSR1, TAF15, FUS, etc.). Although the impact of fusion variants has been linked to histology and prognosis, no study to date has comprehensively investigated the incidence and spectrum of secondary genetic alterations (SGAs) in EMC with regard to their association with fusion type and clinical impact. Our molecular database was searched for EMC tested on a hybridization capture-based targeted matched tumor-norma

[Falcine chondrosarcoma (case report and literature review)].

Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignancy composed of transformed cells of cartilage. This cancer is characterized by slow growth. Almost 75% of intracranial chondrosarcomas are observed on the skull base and grow from bone synchondrosis. Other rarer localizations of tumor are cerebral falx, tentorium cerebelli, vascular plexuses of the ventricles, fourth ventricle, convexital surface of the brain, etc. In this manuscript, we report treatment of patient with falcine chondrosarcoma.

Primary extraosseous dural chondrosarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dural chondrosarcoma is a very rare intracranial tumor, given that meninges do not normally contain cartilaginous tissue from which it can originate. We present a case of primary extraosseous dural chondrosarcoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman presented to our tertiary center neurosurgery consultation with progressive headache, vomiting, vertigo, and gait instability of 5 months' duration. An initial brain CT revealed a large parietal mass with gross calcifications and subtle hyperostosis of the inner table. Subsequent brain MRI showed a heterogeneous expansive lesion wit

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: imaging features and clinical findings.

OBJECTIVE: To describe imaging and clinical features of primary mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) and evaluate for presence of a distinct biphasic pattern on imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with a pathologic diagnosis of MCS were identified along with imaging of their primary tumor. Size, location, appearance (lytic, sclerotic, or mixed), presence, extent and distribution of calcifications, cortical destruction, soft tissue extension, periosteal reaction, contrast enhancement, and radiotracer uptake were recorded. The presence of T2-hyperintense tumor lobules on MRI and a biphasic morp

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma, case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcoma constitutes 0.2% of all malignant tumors of the larynx. Many surgeons treat it with total laryngectomy due to the limited experience with this neoplasm because its rarity, and although several conservative approaches have been proposed, the data of these techniques are limited and based on retrospective series. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 52-year-old male with a transglottic submucosal tumor and glottic stenosis in fiberoptic examination showed by tomography a laryngeal tumor that infiltrates vocal cords, glottis, cricoid and thyroid cartilage of 3 × 2.7 × 4 cm. Next generation sequencing of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is an indolent translocation-associated soft tissue sarcoma with a high propensity for metastases. Using a clinical sequencing approach, we genomically profiled patients with metastatic EMC to elucidate the molecular biology and identify potentially actionable mutations. We also evaluated potential predictive factors of benefit to sunitinib, a multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor with reported activity in a subset of EMC patients. Between January 31, 2012 and April 15, 2016, six patients with EMC participated in the clinical sequencing research stu

Histone deacetylase inhibitors repress chondrosarcoma cell proliferation.

PURPOSE: Due to the high resistance to conventional therapy, there is still no convincingly effective treatment for chondrosarcoma. As a promising new treatment strategy, histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) have been reported to induce cell arrest, apoptosis and differentiation in some kinds of malignancies, but how HDACi exert their effects on chondrosarcoma is not well understood yet. METHODS: We investigated the effects of HDACIs trichostatin A (TSA) and sodium valproate (VPA) on chondrosarcoma cells in vitro and in vivo. The cell proliferation and cell cycle were examined in two chond

Primary renal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: a case report.

A 16-year-old female patient presented to our emergency department with a left upper extremity radiculopathy prompting several imaging studies. Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck revealed multiple cervical vertebrae lesions and computed tomography imaging demonstrated a 15-cm calcified mass originating from the left kidney and extending into the surrounding structures. Pathologic assessment of the open left radical nephrectomy specimen revealed a primary renal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, a tumor that has only been documented in 5 prior case reports in the literature.

High-grade intracranial chondrosarcoma presenting with haemorrhage.

Chondrosarcomas are rare sarcomas that produce malignant cartilage, infrequently arising as a primary intracranial tumour. We present a patient with intracranial chondrosarcoma with intratumoural haemorrhage arising in an unusual location and with unusual imaging findings. A 46-year-old man presented with headache, nausea, and vomiting over the previous 24 hours. Physical and neurological examinations were normal. Cranial CT scans and MRI revealed a large right pre-frontal (subdural) and interhemispheric heterogeneous density associated with a frontal, partially calcified mass and midline shif

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: clinicopathologic study of 20 cases.

CONTEXT: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare, high-grade malignancy of bone or soft tissue with a unique, biphasic histology and poor prognosis. Because of its rarity and variable length of disease-free survival, the natural history of the disease remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To present clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma from one of the largest case series collected by a single, senior-level bone pathologist. DESIGN: Twenty cases were reviewed in consultations spanning 45 years. RESULTS: Eighteen tumors (90%) originated in bone, and

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma with telangiectatic osteosarcoma-like features.

A 35-year-old Japanese man was admitted to the National Cancer Center, Tokyo, Japan, in December 2000, with a 2-month history of pain around the left thigh. Radiographs showed a poorly demarcated osteolytic lesion with focal mineralisation and endosteal scalloping in the left proximal femur. Biopsy showed a proliferation of highly anaplastic cells without any cartilaginous component. A wide excision of the left proximal femur with a replacement by endoprosthesis was carried out in February 2001 after treatment with methotrexate and 20 Gy radiation therapy. Pathological examination of the surgi

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma originating from the femoral vein.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare variant of chondrosarcomas characterized by a bimorphic pattern with areas of the undifferentiated malignant small cells and well differentiated cartilaginous islands.(1) It occurs most commonly in the bone but can also occur in the extraskeletal soft tissues, the brain, and the meninges. This type of tumor has also been described in the eyelids, parapharyngeal space, mediastinum, and the kidney.(1-5) An origin from the large vessels has not been reported in the medical literature. The authors report a case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma originating from the

A systematic review and meta-analysis of radiotherapy and particle beam therapy for skull base chondrosarcoma: TRP-chondrosarcoma 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant bone tumor. Particle beam therapy (PT) can concentrate doses to targets while reducing adverse events. A meta-analysis based on a literature review was performed to examine the efficacy of PT and photon radiotherapy for skull base chondrosarcoma. METHODS: The meta-analysis was conducted using 21 articles published from 1990 to 2022. RESULTS: After PT, the 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 94.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 91.0-96.2%) and 93.9% (95% CI: 90.6-96.1%), respectively, and the 3- and 5-year local control rates were 95
