The Effect of Periodontal Therapy on the Level of MMP-8 in Patients with Chronic Periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: The complete removal of bacterial plaque and their endotoxins in deeper areas of periodontal pockets is often difficult to achieve with conventional methods such as periodontal pocket curettage. An alternative to these methods that recently gained popularity in periodontology is the diode laser, with its antibacterial effect, angiogenesis promotion as advantages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 100 patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis, with periodontal pockets up to 6 mm, and who were divided into two groups: patients treated with basic therapy and diode laser a

Chronic Periodontitis Case Definitions and Confounders in Periodontal Research: A Systematic Assessment.

Case definitions and criteria of periodontal diseases are not yet consistent worldwide. This can affect the accuracy of any comparison made between two studies. This study determines which are the most common chronic periodontitis case definitions as well as confounding variables that have been reported worldwide in periodontal literature. A systematic assessment on periodontal disease classification and confounders was conducted using all publications in MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar between 1965 and October 2017. Screening of eligible studies and data extraction were conducted

Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) depends on many factors but is generally poor. We compared SPT compliance among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. This single-center longitudinal observational study enrolled 101 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP; n = 52) or generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP; n = 49) to compare SPT compliance. All participants were studied for 1 year before the close of data collection. Compliance was classified as complete (100% of programmed visits), erratic (≥50% of programmed visits), or noncompliant (<50% of

Acromegaly is protective for periodontal tissue - advanced chronic periodontitis is rare in acromegalics.

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly is a complex syndrome which influences the connective tissue and bone metabolism. Although the effects of excess growth hormone on bone tissue are well known, its effect on periodontal tissue is an enigma. METHODS: A total of 23 acromegalic patients (mean age 48.13 ± 9.4 years) were included randomly in to this cross-sectional study. The control group consisted of 60 healthy (mean age 50.3 ± 8.5) individuals. All participants were examined by the same periodontist to evaluate periodontal disease status. RESULTS: We studied a group of 23 acromegalic patients (11 females

Effect of periodontal therapy on salivary interleukin-12 levels in chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is considered a central regulator of host resistance against a variety of pathogens. The influence of scaling and root planing was evaluated on amount of IL-12 in salivary fluid of patients with chronic generalized severe periodontitis, in relation to clinical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 subjects were enrolled, of which 25 had chronic generalized severe periodontitis, and 25 periodontally healthy as control. The clinical parameters included plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), pocket probing depth (PPD) bleeding on probing (BOP) and c

Periodontal ligament fibroblasts sustain destructive immune modulators of chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: In healthy periodontal tissue, innate immune responses effectively confine and suppress a bacterial insult. However, a disruption of the host-bacterial equilibrium may produce an overexpression of cytokines and lead to permanent, host-mediated tissue damage. Although such periodontal destruction primarily results from activated immune mechanisms, the site-specific damage suggests that local tissues participate in these pathologic changes. Periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs) are prominent in the periodontium and are critical in homeostasis and regeneration because they have the

The clinical course of chronic periodontitis: V. Predictive factors in periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: The factors associated with initial periodontitis are not well understood and cannot be identified by cross-sectional studies. AIM: To identify the factors associated with the initiation of chronic periodontitis using ante-dependence modelling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 26-year longitudinal study of the natural history of periodontitis served as the basis for the study. In 1969, 565 Norwegian men aged 16-34 years were surveyed. Subsequent surveys were performed in 1971, 1973, 1975, 1981, 1988 and finally in 1995, with 223 remaining subjects. Plaque (PlI), gingival (GI) and calculus

Periodontal pathogens in atheromatous plaques isolated from patients with chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that chronic infections may predispose to cardiovascular disease. The relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease has been a subject of increasing research in recent years. The isolation and identification of periodontal bacteria from atheromatous plaque can contribute to our knowledge of this vascular disease. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify periodontal bacteria from the periodontal pockets of different patients and to compare them with the microorganisms detected in the atheromatous plaques obtained fro

Periodontal repair in dogs: healing in experimentally created chronic periodontal defects.

A need exists for well-defined animal models to objectively evaluate surgical principles and a possible role for biochemical wound conditioning and biomaterials in promoting periodontal regeneration. To test an existing model for its usefulness in quantitative evaluation of periodontal wound healing, large supraalveolar periodontal defects were surgically created around the mandibular premolars (P2, P3, P4) in left or right jaw quadrants in 5 beagle dogs. The defects were exposed to the oral environment for 6 months and were then subjected to reconstructive flap surgery (chronic defects). Heal

Alzheimer's disease and chronic periodontitis: is there an association?

Alzheimer's disease, an affliction of old age, is one of the leading causes for dementia worldwide. Various risk factors including family history, genetics and infections have been implicated in its pathogenesis. The cognitive decline in this condition is mainly a result of the formation of amyloid deposits that provoke neuroinflammation, ultimately resulting in cell death. Recently, an association between peripheral inflammation and Alzheimer's disease was hypothesized. It was suggested that chronic systemic inflammation worsened the inflammatory processes in the brain. This was mainly attrib

The relationship of stress and anxiety with chronic periodontitis.

In previous studies, we have shown that menstrual endometrium preferentially adheres to the subepithelial lining of the peritoneum. It remains to be elucidated, however, whether this damage is preexisting or inflicted by the menstrual tissue itself. We hypothesized that the menstrual tissue itself damages the peritoneum. To investigate this, the viability of menstrual endometrial tissue in peritoneal fluid (PF) was evaluated and the morphologic changes in the mesothelial cells were studied by in vitro cocultures of menstruum with mesothelial cell monolayers. Menstruum was collected with a mens

Chronic renal failure and periodontal disease.

In order to define the effects of chronic renal failure (CRF) in the progress of gingival inflammation, we studied 6 patients (4 male, 2 female) with CRF who were on chronic hemodialysis for 4.25 (range 1-15) years. Six healthy individuals, age and sex matched were used as controls. The protocol which we used comprised of two periods (a) a 40-day duration period of preparation and (b) a 28-day duration experimental period. During the (a) period, all subjects went through: (1) therapy of the chronic gingivitis and (2) complete control of dental plaque by oral hygiene. During the experimental pe
