Consumption of Oral Nicotine Products in Relation to Postanesthesia Care Unit Recovery After Laparoscopic Appendectomy. A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral nicotine product (ONP) consumption is constantly increasing while combustible cigar smoking is becoming rare. Possible effects of ONP consumption for early recovery after general anesthesia are poorly recorded. METHODS: Prospective single-center study with 151 participants undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy. Incidence of ONP consumption was recorded and consumers were compared to non-consumers intraoperatively and during postanesthesia care unit (PACU) stay. RESULTS: Of 151 patients 32 (21%, 95% CI, 15%-28%) reported regular ONP consumption and it was associated with eleva

Association of tobacco use with depressive symptoms in adults: Considerations of symptom severity, symptom clusters, and sex.

OBJECTIVE: We aim to assess the association between depressive symptoms, depressive symptom severity and symptom clusters with tobacco use. We will also evaluate sex differences in these associations. METHOD: This cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Tobacco use was categorized into four groups: cigarette use, smoked tobacco products (pipes and cigars), smokeless tobacco products (chewing tobacco and snuff), and non-tobacco use (reference group). Tobacco, alcohol, asbestos, and occupational risk factors for laryngeal cancer.

Data from a hospital-based case-control study between 1985-1990 were used to examine the effects of tobacco, alcohol, asbestos, and other occupational exposures on laryngeal cancer risk in 194 white men with primary cancer of the larynx and 184 age-matched control subjects. A dose-dependent effect for current cigarette smoking was observed, with higher relative risks (RR) for supraglottic cancer (RR, 21.6 to 68) than for cancer of the glottis (RR, 5.5 to 20.7). Elevated RR for ex-smokers (RR, 4.8) and pipe and cigar smokers (RR, 4.3) did not vary by subsite. The effects of alcohol also showed

The effect of emerging tobacco related products and their toxic constituents on thrombosis.

Although conventional cigarette smoking is declining, emerging tobacco related products (ETRPs) are currently gaining ground, especially among the youth. These products include electronic cigarettes, waterpipes/hookah, cigars/cigarillo, smokeless tobacco, and heat-not-burn cigarettes. The observed increase in the use of ETRPs is multifactorial and complex but appears to be mainly driven by efforts from the major tobacco companies to reinvent themselves, and present more appealing and allegedly safe(r) tobacco products. However, it is becoming apparent that these products produce substantial am

Decline of oropharyngeal cancer in Chiangmai province, Thailand, between 1988 and 1999.

A decline of oropharyngeal cancer has already been predicted for Thailand since the early 1960s. To substantiate these predictions it was the purpose of this study to examine trends in the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer in the province of Chiangmai, (1988-1999). Data on cancer incidence were extracted from the annual reports of the Cancer Registry, Cancer Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Chiangmai University, Thailand (1992-1999) and an IARC report on cancer in Thailand (1988-1991). The age-standardized annual incidence per 100000 of oral cancer in males dropped from 3.6 (1988-1991) to 1.2 in 199

Breast cancer in men: risk factors with hormonal implications.

Cases included in a population-based case-control study of breast cancer in men were recruited from 10 geographic areas of the United States from 1983 to 1986. Controls, matched to cases on age and geographic area, were selected by random digit dialing for men under age 65 years and from Health Care Financing Administration files for older men. Results are based on responses from 227 cases and 300 controls to questions asked in a standardized personal interview. An increased risk of breast cancer was most strongly associated with undescended testes and was also related to orchiectomy, orchitis

Association between tobacco product use and asthma among US adults from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study waves 2-4.

BACKGROUND: Research on cigarettes and adult asthma offers mixed findings, perhaps due to overlap with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inadequate adjustment for other smoke exposures. Associations between other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, and asthma are also understudied. RESEARCH QUESTION: Using Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study waves 2-4 (2014/2015-2016/2017) data, we assessed the relation between tobacco product use and asthma in persons unlikely to have COPD. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Prospective study of 10 267 adults aged 18-39 years witho

Life time occupation, smoking, caffeine, saccharine, hair dyes and bladder carcinogenesis.

A case-control study of bladder cancer in two northern counties of New Jersey was conducted to investigate a tumour that has been considered to be strongly associated with industrial and environmental exposures. The study population included 75 bladder cancer cases and 142 controls. Cases and controls were matched for race, sex, age, place of birth and place of residence. Statistically significant associations with bladder cancer and risk ratios of greater than 2.0 were found for cigarette smoking and for working in dye, petroleum (fuel) or plastics industries. No statistically significant ass

Acrolein Exposure in U.S. Tobacco Smokers and Non-Tobacco Users: NHANES 2005-2006.

BACKGROUND: Acrolein is a highly reactive α,β unsaturated aldehyde and respiratory irritant. Acrolein is formed during combustion (e.g., burning tobacco or biomass), during high-temperature cooking of foods, and in vivo as a product of oxidative stress and polyamine metabolism. No biomonitoring reference data have been reported to characterize acrolein exposure for the U.S. OBJECTIVES: Our goals were to a) evaluate two acrolein metabolites in urine--N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxypropyl)-L-cysteine (3HPMA) and N-acetyl-S-(2-carboxyethyl)-L-cysteine (CEMA)--as biomarkers of exposure to acrolein for the

Association of Perceived Neighborhood Disorder with Substance Use Behaviors and Retail Access Among Southern California Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood disadvantage is associated with a higher concentration of tobacco, cannabis and alcohol retailers and greater risk of certain substance use behaviors among youth. Less is known about the impact of subjective neighborhood disorder, which captures distinct exposures that may be relevant to substance use outcomes, including neighborhood social processes, safety, physical characteristics, and neighborhood drug use. METHODS: Data are from two waves (Feb-Dec 2022) of a prospective cohort of Southern California high school students (n = 2,139; mean[SD] age = 15.7.[0.6]). We

E-Cigarette Use among Current Smokers Experiencing Homelessness.

Two-thirds of cigarette smokers experiencing homelessness report using alternative tobacco products, including blunts, cigarillos (little cigars) or roll-your-own tobacco or electronic nicotine delivery systems such as e-cigarettes. We examined attitudes toward e-cigarette use and explored whether e-cigarette use patterns were associated with past-year cigarette quit attempts among current smokers experiencing homelessness. Among the 470 current cigarette smokers recruited from homeless service sites in San Francisco, 22.1% (n = 65) reported the use of e-cigarettes in the past 30 days ('dual u

Oral and periodontal implications of tobacco and nicotine products.

Tobacco use contributes to more mortality and morbidity globally than any other behavioral risk factor. Adverse effects do not spare the oral cavity, with many oral diseases more common, and treatments less successful, in the tobacco-using patient. Many of the oral health effects of cigarette smoking are well established, but other forms of tobacco, including cigars and smokeless tobacco, merit dental professionals' attention. Recently, an expanding variety of new or emerging tobacco and/or nicotine products has been brought to market, most prominently electronic cigarettes, but also including

Estimating the Prevalence of and Clarifying Factors Associated With Multiple Tobacco Product Use in Japan: A Cross-sectional Study in 2022.

BACKGROUND: Multiple tobacco product (MTP) use is a public health concern due to their combined adverse health effects. MTP use may have increased since heated tobacco products (HTPs) became more prevalent in Japan. This study aimed to (1) estimate the recent prevalence of MTP use and clarify the associated factors compared to (2) non-smokers and (3) single-product users. METHODS: We used data from an internet survey conducted in February 2022. The prevalence of MTP use in Japan was estimated using inverse probability-weighted scores from this survey and a nationwide survey by the Japanese go

Price Policy and Taxation as Effective Strategies for Tobacco Control.

OBJECTIVE: Only 13% of the world's population are living in countries imposing appropriate tobacco tax-rates. This study aims to promote the implementation of price policy measures as a striking tobacco control strategy in Austria and to encourage other countries to further increase their taxes to WHO best-practice levels. METHOD: This study used the yearly economic data from Austria from 1997 to 2015. Applying a model for regression analysis, the price elasticity of total tobacco consumption was estimated. RESULTS: Between 1997 and 2015 the price elasticity of demand for tobacco products (i

Evaluation of skin microtopography as a measure of ultraviolet exposure.

A pilot study was conducted to investigate the use of skin microtopography as a semiquantitative noninvasive method for estimating cumulative sun exposure in epidemiologic studies of eye disease. The subjects received a kit through the mail containing materials needed to make a replica of the skin texture of a sun-exposed area of the hand. Each subject previously had undergone a skin biopsy around the same site to evaluate elastotic degeneration, and all were interviewed about past sun exposures. A gradable skin impression was obtained from 96 of 115 (83%) participants after two mailings. The

Obsolete tobacco control themes can be hazardous to public health: the need for updating views on absolute product risks and harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: Leading themes have guided tobacco control efforts, and these themes have changed over the decades. When questions arose about health risks of tobacco, they focused on two key themes: 1) how bad is the problem (i.e., absolute risk) and 2) what can be done to reduce the risk without cessation (i.e., prospects for harm reduction). Using the United States since 1964 as an example, we outline the leading themes that have arisen in response to these two questions. Initially, there was the recognition that "cigarettes are hazardous to health" and an acceptance of safer alternative tobacc
