Clinical reports and descriptions of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and chronic ciguatera fish poisoning (CCFP) show great similarities in clinical symptomology. These similarities in the literature suggested the exploration of lipids in sera of CFS, CCFP, and other diseases with the membrane immunobead assay (MIA), which is typically used for screening ciguateric ocean fish. Sera from patients with other diseases, including hepatitis B, cancer, and diabetes, were included to assess the degree of specificity involved. Sera were treated with acetone in a ratio of 1 part serum to 4 parts acetone

Ciguatoxin may be a terrible coral fish toxin that can result in poisoning in people who eat fish containing ciguatoxin. Being lack of a convenient and accurate detection method for ciguatoxin, Ciguatera fish poisoning have occurred from time to time. To provide references for detection and prevention of ciguatera fish poisoning, in this paper, the current detection methods of ciguatoxin were reviewed.

Historical records of ciguatera in Mexico date back to 1862. This review, including references and epidemiological reports, documents 464 cases during 25 events from 1984 to 2013: 240 (51.72%) in Baja California Sur, 163 (35.12%) in Quintana Roo, 45 (9.69%) in Yucatan, and 16 (3.44%) cases of Mexican tourists intoxicated in Cuba. Carnivorous fish, such as snapper (Lutjanus) and grouper (Epinephelus and Mycteroperca) in the Pacific Ocean, and great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and snapper (Lutjanus) in the Atlantic (Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea), were involved in all cases. In the Mexica

This study examined 328 CFS sera in a study with 17 CCFP, 8 Gulf War Veterans (GWV), 24 Prostate Cancer (PC), and 52 normal sera in the modified Membrane Immunobead Assay (MIA) procedure for CTX. Three hundred and twenty-eight CFS patients' sera were examined by the modified MIA with purified MAb-CTX and 91.2% gave a titre > or =1:40. 76% of the 17 CCFP sera samples and 100% of the 8 GWV sera samples also had a titre > or =1:40. 92.3% of 52 normal sera showed titres of 1:20 or less, while 4 gave titres of > or =1:40. In addition, 41 sera were examined for Anti-Cardiolipin (aCL) by a commercial

The known and theoretical pharmacology of poisons involved in toxic marine ingestions has assisted in the development of specific therapeutics for these afflictions. The clinical manifestations of several toxic marine ingestions have suggested toxins/cogeners that may be involved in the poisoning process, providing direction for the development of diagnostic laboratory tests, including those for cyclic ethers. Future investigations should involve utilization of acetaminophen and indomethacin for chronic ciguatera fish poisoning, and the evaluation of the role of polycyclic ethers in the temper

Ciguatera fish poisoning is a seafood-toxin illness resulting from consumption of fish contaminated with ciguatoxins. Managing ciguatera fish poisoning is complex. It is made easier, however, by local fishers from endemic areas reporting regional predictability for local fish species' ciguatera fish poisoning risk, which the present study then tested. We investigated the prevalence of ciguatoxins in 4 commonly marketed and consumed species (Balistes vetula, Haemulon plumierii, Ocyurus chrysurus, and Epinephelus guttatus) across an oceanic gradient (north, south, east, and west) from the US Vir

Ciguatoxins are marine biotoxins that induce the human poisoning syndrome known as ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). In humans, different kinds of neurological symptoms have been reported after CFP, including anxiety, depression and memory loss. Repetitive exposures to sub-threshold levels of ciguatera toxins may cause irreversible sub-clinical damage, and eventually cause more severe illness. Our previous study has shown that an acute single dose of Pacific ciguatoxin-1 (P-CTX-1) induced synaptic facilitation and blockage of the induction of electrical stimulation-induced long-term potentiation

Seafood is a common vehicle for the transmission of infections and intoxications. The main concerns in the UK are scombroid fish poisoning, viral infections (associated with bivalve molluscs) and bacterial infections (associated with crustaceans). Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) and red whelk poisoning occur sporadically, and ciguatera has started to appear associated with imported fish. The appearance in coastal waters of marine algae associated with diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) has increased the likelihood of outbreaks of this toxic syndrome. The dinoflagellates causing neurotoxic

Ciguatera fish poisoning is the most common marine food poisoning worldwide. It has been hypothesized that increasing seawater temperature will result in increasing ciguatera incidence. In St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, we performed an island-wide telephone survey (N = 807) and a medical record review of diagnosed ciguatera cases at the emergency department of the sole hospital and compared these data with comparable data sources collected in 1980. Annual incidence from both recent data sources remained high (12 per 1,000 among adults in the telephone survey). However, the combined data source

Ciguatera fish poisoning is probably more important than any other form of seafood poisoning. Its epidemiology is complex and it is impossible to predict outbreaks. Toxic fish (which look, taste and smell normal) contain ciguatoxins derived from microalgae via the food chain. The toxins are not destroyed by cooking and, if consumed in sufficient dose, can cause symptoms persisting for weeks, months or years. The incidence of ciguatera is expected to increase in association with global warming and widespread bleaching and death of coral.

Patients with ciguatera poisoning commonly present with gastrointestinal and neurologic symptoms, but its cardiotoxicity has been largely unrecognized. This systematic review is the first to summarize the evidence regarding clinical characteristics of cardiotoxicity from ciguatera poisoning to provide the illness script and pertinent knowledge for clinicians. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, we searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for all peer-reviewed articles using keywords including "ciguatera" and "cardiotoxicity" from their inception to Ja

A few days after a seafood meal a patient suffered ataxia and stupor. His examination revealed a confused patient with cerebellar signs and ocular disturbances (hypotropia). Blood results, cerebrospinal fluid and brain CT scan were unremarkable. The patient developed a septic shock and died 4 weeks after admission. No necropsy was performed. Questioning his family confirmed that he had eaten a shellfish meal a few hours before onset of the digestive signs. Trocas (Tectus pyramis) were definitely identified. The clinical picture strongly suggested a seafood poisoning, namely ciguatera. However,

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) which are produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa and share a ladder-shaped polyether structure, are causative compounds of one of the most frequent foodborne illness disease known as ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). CFP was initially found in tropical and subtropical areas but nowadays the dinoflagellates producers of ciguatoxins had spread to European coasts. Therefore, this raises the need of establishing toxicity equivalency factors for the different compounds that can contribute to ciguatera fish poisoning, since biological methods have been re

Ciguatoxins are the major toxins responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning, a disease dominated by muco-cutaneous sensory disorders including paresthesiae, cold dysesthesia and pruritus. While the ciguatoxins are well known to target voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs), the ensuing molecular mechanisms underlying these sensory disorders remain poorly understood. In this study, we propose a primary sensory neuron-keratinocyte co-culture as an appropriate model to study the neuro-cutaneous effects of ciguatoxins. Using this model, we show for the first time that nanomolar concentrations of Paci

Ciguatera is a foodborne poisoning caused by eating seafood from tropical and subtropical reef areas. According to official data from the local health department, cases of ciguatera in French Polynesia are estimated to involve 240 to 400 persons per 100 000 inhabitants. Associated with a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, nervous, and general signs, ciguatera is usually benign although some forms can lead to hospitalization. The purpose of this report is to describe two unusual cases involving patients who developed acute polyradiculoneuritis with Guillain-Barré-syndrome-like p

An account is given of some aspects of poisonings sustained by coming into contact with animals of the coral reefs of the Fiji Islands. Poisonings can be grouped into those in which the toxin is introduced parenterally-envenomings, and those in which it is ingested. Illustrative case histories are presented of injuries from 2 echinoderms and of envenoming from the "deadly" stonefish. A therapeutic approach to puffer-fish poisoning is mentioned and the problem of ciguatera poisoning is outlined.

INTRODUCTION: Ciguatera is a food poisoning caused by marine organisms and has a polymoprhic clinic. Differential diagnoses need to be eliminated.
OBSERVATION: A patient was hospitalized for a febrile syndrome a few days after the appearance of clinical signs suggestive of ciguatera after consuming lagoon fish. He also presented with central neurological signs and brain MRI revealed a lesion of the corpus callosum. A skin infection linked to the scratching lesions was the cause of this febrile state and a diagnosis of CLOCCS was made based on the lesions on MRI.
CONCLUSION: A central neurolo

The first ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in Portugal dates from 2008 when 11 people reported CFP symptoms after consuming a 30 kg amberjack caught around the Selvagens Islands (Madeira Archipelago). Since then, 49 human poisonings have been reported. The emergence of a new threat challenged scientists and regulators, as methods for toxic microalgae analyses and ciguatoxin (CTX) detection were not implemented. To minimise the risk of ciguatera, the Madeira Archipelago authorities interdicted fisheries in Selvagens Islands and banned the capture of amberjacks weighing more than 10 kg in the enti

Biopsy-proved polymyositis subsequently developed in two patients who were severely poisoned by ciguatera fish toxin. Ciguatera toxin may have several mechanisms of action and may represent more than one toxin. The patients' clinical courses and the unlikelihood of coincidence of contracting both diseases suggested to us a causal relationship. Although we cannot prove this relationship, we suggest a mechanism by which the toxin predisposed the muscle to inflammation.
