Multifunctional antimicrobial effects of Lactobacillus johnsonii against A/E pathogens Enteropathogenic E. coli and Citrobacter rodentium.

INTRODUCTION: Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) remains a leading cause of childhood diarrhea in low-resource settings, and escalating antimicrobial resistance necessitates non-antibiotic therapeutic approaches. This study investigates Lactobacillus johnsonii as a probiotic candidate capable of limiting A/E-pathogen colonization and attenuating infection-associated intestinal inflammation. METHODS: The probiotic properties of L. johnsonii were evaluated through assays of gastrointestinal tolerance, epithelial adhesion, antimicrobial activity, biofilm inhibition, and pathogen exclusion.

Antibiotic Resistance Hotspot: Comparative Genomics Reveals Multiple Strains of Multidrug-Resistant Citrobacter portucalensis in Edible Snails.

The demand for terrestrial snails as a food source is still on the increase globally, yet this has been overlooked in disease epidemiology and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. This study conducted genomic analyses of twenty Citrobacter portucalensis strains isolated from live edible snails traded in two hubs. The isolates were subjected to MALDI-TOF MS, antimicrobial resistance testing, whole genome sequencing, and analyses for in-depth characterization. The findings disclosed that seventeen strains across the two trading hubs were distinct from previously reported ones. Four isolates w

Pathogenic infection and immune-related gene expression of Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) challenged by Citrobacter freundii.

Citrobacter freundii is one of the important bacterial diseases responsible for disease outbreaks to wild and cultured fishes globally. However, no known empirical research has focused on exploring relationships between immune response after C. freundii infection in sturgeons. In this study, C. freundii was isolated and identified from artificially breeding Chinese sturgeon, and global measurement of transcriptome response to C. freundii infection in head-kidney and spleen of A. sinensis were conducted to the acknowledgement of the potential mechanisms of pathogen-host interaction triggered by

Complete genome arrangement revealed the emergence of a poultry origin superbug Citrobacter portucalensis strain NR-12.

OBJECTIVES: Citrobacter spp. are part of normal human and animal intestinal flora. Citrobacter portucalensis (C. portucalensis) is closely related to Citrobacter freundii, which is an emerging opportunistic nosocomial pathogen. The aim of this study was to retrieve colistin-resistant Citrobacter spp. from poultry in Bangladesh. METHODS: The C. portucalensis strain NR-12 was isolated from poultry droppings and subjected to antibiotic susceptibility testing. Complete genome analysis of NR-12 was performed followed by bioinformatics. It is believed that this is one of first reports of its kind o

Specialized Proresolving Mediators Rescue Infant Mice from Lethal Citrobacter rodentium Infection and Promote Immunity against Reinfection.

Infants are generally highly susceptible to oral pathogens. Intestinal infection and the associated diarrhea are significant global causes of morbidity and mortality in infants. Among the enteric pathogens, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) stands out as showing the highest risk for infection-induced death in infants ≤12 months old. We have developed an experimental model of infant infection with EPEC, using the mouse-specific pathogen Citrobacter rodentium Our murine infant model is similar to EPEC infection in human infants since infant mice are much more susceptible to C. rodentium i

Severe asthma patient with secondary Citrobacter koseri abdominal infection: first case report and review of the literature.

Citrobacter koseri (C. koseri) is a Gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming facultative anaerobic bacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. C. koseri typically utilizes citrate as the sole carbon source and constitutes part of the normal gastrointestinal flora in humans and animals. As an opportunistic pathogen, C. koseri infections are mainly observed in neonates, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised hosts. C. koseri has been one of the main etiological agents of neonatal meningitis and cerebral abscess. In recent years, an increasing number of cases have been reported in ad

Phenotypic Characterization and Whole-Genome Analysis of a Novel Bacteriophage HCF1 Infecting Citrobacter amalonaticus and C. freundii.

Citrobacter species often occur in sewage, food, soil, wastewater, and in the intestinal tract of animals and humans. Citrobacter spp. cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) and infantile meningitis in humans. Due to the presence of plasmid-encoded resistance genes, Citrobacter spp. are often resistant to many antibiotics. In this study, Citrobacter virus HCF1, a novel virulent bacteriophage capable of killing Citrobacter amalonaticus and Citrobacter freundii, was isolated from the sewage water. The isolated bacteriophage was characterized with respect to transmission electron microscopy, one-s

Retinoic Acid Mediated Clearance of Citrobacter rodentium in Vitamin A Deficient Mice Requires CD11b+ and T Cells.

Vitamin A deficiency affects over 250 million preschool-age children worldwide and is associated with increased childhood mortality and risk of developing enteric infections. Vitamin A deficient (A-) mice developed chronic Citrobacter rodentium infection. A single oral dose of retinoic acid (RA) at d7 post-infection was sufficient to induce clearance of the pathogen in A- mice. RA treatment of A- mice induced il17 expression in the colon. In A- mice, colonic IL-17 was primarily produced by CD11b+ cells; however, in A+ mice, the major source of colonic IL-17 was CD4+ T cells. To determine the c

Citrobacter koseri causing osteomyelitis in a diabetic foot with concomitant acute gouty arthritis successfully treated with ertapenem.

We present an elderly diabetic man with left hallux pain and drainage who was initially diagnosed with acute gouty arthritis using the diagnostic rule for acute gout and monosodium urate crystals presented on synovial fluid analysis. Further investigation with surgical debridement, plain X-ray, MRI and wound culture revealed concomitant Citrobacter koseri septic arthritis with osteomyelitis. C. koseri is considered an opportunistic infection that rarely causes musculoskeletal infections. Acute gouty arthritis and septic arthritis are rarely seen occurring concomitantly in the same joint and ar

Genetic Diversity of KPC-Producing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, Serratia marcescens, and Citrobacter freundii Isolates from Argentina.

The predominance of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae was caused by the spread of ST258 clone. In Latin America, KPC was reported in 2006, with the isolation of genetically unrelated K. pneumoniae in Colombia. Since then, the expansion of blaKPC in either K. pneumoniae ST258 or other Enterobacteriaceae (ETB) species was increasingly reported. In this study, we characterized 89 KPC-producing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, Serratia marcescens, and Citrobacter freundii that were received between 2010 and 2014. The results revealed that all isolates harbored
