Single-dose amoxycillin-clavulanic acid vs. cefotetan for prophylaxis in elective colorectal surgery: a multicentre, prospective, randomized study. The PRODIGE Group.

A prospective, multicentre, randomized trial was carried out in 19 hospitals in order to compare the efficacy of amoxycillin-clavulanic acid with cefotetan as antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery. Since the main purpose of the study was to demonstrate equivalence between the two regimens, the protocol planned the inclusion of 200 patients. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to receive either amoxycillin-clavulanic acid (2.2 g) or cefotetan (2 g) in a single infusion on the induction of anaesthesia. Failure of prophylaxis was defined as occurrence of i

Successful treatment of two individual cases of generalized granuloma annulare with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and a combination of doxycycline and pentoxifylline.

Granuloma annulare is a benign inflammatory skin disease potentially related to a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the dermis. Generalized granuloma annulare (GGA) manifests as diffuse skin-colored to erythematous annular or nummular plaques affecting at least the trunk and either upper or lower extremities, or both. GGA is resistant to many therapeutic modalities, making it difficult to treat. Different therapeutic approaches to GGA have been attempted but definitive treatment for this disease remains elusive. This article focuses on the use of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and a combinatio

Phenotypic and molecular detection of efflux pump and expression profiling genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae exposed to ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid.

BACKGROUND: One of the main strategies Gram-negative bacteria employ to lower internal antibiotic concentrations is efflux. By identifying and eliminating a variety of harmful substances, including antibiotics, these active transport systems help bacteria become less susceptible to drugs and develop new resistance mechanisms. Efflux pumps are involved in bacterial stress response, pathogenicity, biofilm formation, and host physiology alteration in addition to offering an escape from antibacterial chemicals. OBJECTIVE: This research is designed to study the prevalence of efflux pump genes and

Stress-induced biosynthesis of Streptazolin, Streptazone E/F, and clavulanic acid by Streptomyces clavuligerus KARE_KK2 under plastic-enriched high-salinity fermentation.

Finding new bioactive metabolites offers a powerful solution to combat antibiotic resistance. Under plastic-enriched high salinity fermentation environment, Streptazolin, Streptazone E/F, and clavulanic acid biosynthesis by Streptomyces clavuligerus KARE_KK2, an actinobacterial isolate from termite mound soil, was studied. The fermentation medium was modified with 12% NaCl, 2% UV pretreated polythene, 2% plastic powder and 0.5% urea to mimic osmotic and xenobiotic stress. Post-10-day incubation with aeration, ethyl acetate was used to extract and analyze extracellular metabolites by LC-MS/MS.

Favourable effect of clavulanic acid on the minimum inhibitory concentrations of cefixime and ceftibuten in ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

OBJECTIVES: The use of cephalosporins combined with clavulanate for the treatment of ESBL-harbouring Enterobacteriaceae has been scarcely described. We aimed to describe the effect of different concentrations of clavulanate in the MIC of cefixime and ceftibuten of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. METHODS: ESBL-producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates were studied. Fixed concentrations of cefixime and ceftibuten (ranges of 32-0.25 and 64-0.5 ng/ml, respectively) were used. Combinations of cefixime/clavulanate and ceftibuten/clavulanate in different ratios (1:0, 1:

Enhancement of antimicrobial activities of cefteram or clavulanic acid/amoxicillin against cefixime-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the presence of clarithromycin or azithromycin.

We investigated the enhancement of the antimicrobial activities of beta-lactams against cefixime (CFIX)-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the presence of macrolides. Ten strains of CFIX-resistant N. gonorrhoeae, isolated between 2000 and 2003 from male patients with urethritis at Jikei University Affiliated Hospital and its related clinics in the Tokyo metropolitan area, were tested. The fractional inhibitory concentrations of clavulanic acid/amoxicillin (CVA/AMPC), CFIX, or cefteram (CFTM), in the presence of clarithromycin (CAM) or azithromycin (AZM), against these strains were determined.

[Treatment of acute otitis media in infants using an amoxicillin-clavulanic acid formulation (in the form of an oral suspension for pediatric use)].

In a multicenter study, Augmentin pediatric suspension was given to 1,227 young children (3 months - 3 years) with otitis media seen in private practice. Patterns of otitis included first episodes, recurrences, and forms that had failed to respond to previous antimicrobial therapy. The study medication was given as a first-line treatment, on the basis of epidemiologic data, in a daily dose of 40 mg/kg for 7 to 10 days. In the 3 months to 3 years age group, two micro-organisms are prevalent, ie. Haemophilus influenzae, which is the most common agent and may produce beta-lactamases (10 to 18% of

In Vitro Activity of Cefaclor/Beta-Lactamases Inhibitors (Clavulanic Acid and Sulbactam) Combination Against Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Producing Uropathogenic E. coli.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype termed extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli is a significant and growing global health concern. In response to the rising prevalence, the novel Beta Lactam-Beta Lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) combinations have been introduced in recent years. While these agents have shown efficacy, their clinical utility is constrained by high cost, limited availability, and emerging resistance mechanisms. The rational of this study was to test the in vitro activity of a cost-effective alternative

Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 2000mg/125mg extended release (XR): a review of its use in the treatment of respiratory tract infections in adults.

Historically, immunological research in psychiatry was based on empirical findings and early epidemiological studies indicating a possible relationship between psychiatric symptoms and acute infectious diseases. However, aetiopathological explanations for psychiatric disorders are no longer closely related to acute infection. Nevertheless, immune hypotheses have been discussed in schizophrenia, affective disorders and infantile autism in the last decades. Although the variability between the results of the epidemiological studies conducted to date is strikingly high, there is still some eviden

Molecular epidemiology and resistance mechanisms involved in reduced susceptibility to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from a chronic care centre.

The aim of this work was to investigate the molecular epidemiology and mechanisms responsible for reduced susceptibility to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC) amongst cefazolin-susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates from patients admitted to a chronic care institution. In total, 51 (29.8%) of 171 K. pneumoniae isolates recovered between 2006 and 2008 were non-susceptible to AMC, of which 45 were susceptible to cefazolin. Nucleotide sequencing analysis revealed that 19 produced IRT-11 and the remaining 26 were OXA-1-producers. All of the OXA-1-producing isolates harboured the aac(6')-Ib-cr-b
