Quantifying excess deaths related to heatwaves under climate change scenarios: A multicountry time series modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Heatwaves are a critical public health problem. There will be an increase in the frequency and severity of heatwaves under changing climate. However, evidence about the impacts of climate change on heatwave-related mortality at a global scale is limited. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We collected historical daily time series of mean temperature and mortality for all causes or nonexternal causes, in periods ranging from January 1, 1984, to December 31, 2015, in 412 communities within 20 countries/regions. We estimated heatwave-mortality associations through a two-stage time series design.

A Global-Level Model of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Child Stunting via Income and Food Price in 2030.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, 23% of children (155 million) aged [Formula: see text] were stunted. Global-level modeling has consistently found climate change impacts on food production are likely to impair progress on reducing undernutrition. OBJECTIVES: We adopt a new perspective, assessing how climate change may affect child stunting via its impacts on two interacting socioeconomic drivers: incomes of the poorest 20% of populations (due to climate impacts on crop production, health, labor productivity, and disasters) and food prices. METHODS: We developed a statistical model to project moderate an

Downscaled climate change projections with uncertainty assessment over India using a high resolution multi-model approach.

This study presents the possible regional climate change over South Asia with a focus over India as simulated by three very high resolution regional climate models (RCMs). One of the most striking results is a robust increase in monsoon precipitation by the end of the 21st century but regional differences in strength. First the ability of RCMs to simulate the monsoon climate is analyzed. For this purpose all three RCMs are forced with ECMWF reanalysis data for the period 1989-2008 at a horizontal resolution of ~25 km. The results are compared against independent observations. In order to simul

Time series patterns of dengue and associated climate variables in Bangladesh and Singapore (2000-2020): a comparative study of statistical models to forecast dengue cases.

This study explores the effect of climate factors on dengue incidence in Bangladesh and Singapore from 2000 to 2020. Various forecasting models, including Seasonal ARIMA, Poisson regression, artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), and other statistical techniques, were applied to forecast dengue trends and generate future datasets. The results showed that Bangladesh has higher mean temperatures. The Poisson regression indicated that rainfall positively correlated with dengue cases in Bangladesh, while humidity and sunshine showed negative associations. In Singapore, te

Predicting the potential distribution of Atractylodes lancea in China under CMIP6 climate scenarios using an optimized MaxEnt model.

Atractylodes lancea is an important medicinal plant in China, and climate change may affect wild-resource conservation and cultivation planning. However, its current potential ecological suitability, future range dynamics, and relationship with traditional or reported producing regions remain insufficiently clarified under optimized species distribution modelling and CMIP6 climate scenarios. We used 220 occurrence records and environmental variables related to climate, topography, vegetation, and soil to predict the current and future potential suitable habitats of A. lancea in China with an o

Climate-Driven Distribution and Ecological Niche Modeling of Three Anopheles Species in China Using the Biomod2 Ensemble Framework.

This study aimed to project the current and future suitable habitats of three primary malaria vectors in China-An. lesteri, An. minimus, and An. sinensis-using an ensemble modeling approach. We simulated their geographical distributions under current and future climates (SSP126, SSP245, SSP585) using the Biomod2 platform with 19 bioclimatic variables and elevation. The ensemble models achieved high predictive performance, as reflected by AUC and TSS values. Environmental drivers were species-specific: An. lesteri was primarily influenced by elevation, temperature seasonality (Bio4), and season

The burden of hand, foot, and mouth disease attributable to climate variability: A nationwide time-series modeling study in Japan.

Substantial evidence suggests that meteorological variables are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) incidence; however, geographic variation in these associations and in the corresponding attributable burden remains insufficiently characterized. We conducted a nationwide time-series analysis to quantify the burden of HFMD attributable to non-optimal ambient temperature and relative humidity in Japan, while examining between-prefecture variation in the estimated associations. For each of the 47 prefectures (2000-2019), exposure-lag-response functions for temperature and humidit

The burden of El Niño-Southern Oscillation-related dengue attributable to anthropogenic climate change: a multicountry modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is known to be associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) but the size of the effect is unclear, as is the influence of anthropogenic climate change (ACC). We aimed to quantify the associations between ENSO and dengue risk in 21 countries, and to estimate the contribution of ACC to the ENSO-related dengue burden. METHODS: We collected monthly dengue cases and observed and simulated climate data from 21 countries including 1237 locations from 2000 to 2019. We characterised Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP) ENSO exposures for each location based on the E

Approximating Bayesian spatial relative risk of dengue in Bandung: A gradient boosting surrogate model with demographic and climatic features.

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), a disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, remains a critical public health issue. Bandung is recorded as having one of the highest numbers of DHF cases in Indonesia, exhibiting a concerning increasing trend annually. This persistent rise indicates that the current control efforts for DHF have not been optimal. In this study, the relative risk of DHF transmission across subdistricts in Bandung is estimated using the Besag, York, and Mollié (BYM) model within a Bayesian inference framework. The BYM model is extended by incorporating additional covariates:

Seasonal and spatial trends of rickettsioses in Sri Lanka (2009-2023): Spatio-temporal analysis and climate-linked modeling.

BACKGROUND: Rickettsioses are caused by obligate intracellular bacteria of the order Rickettsiales, which includes several genera such as Rickettsia, Orientia, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Neoehrlichia, and Neorickettsia, and are significant yet under-recognised vector-borne febrile illnesses in Sri Lanka. Despite being a notifiable disease, gaps in understanding its spatial and temporal distribution hinder effective control and prevention. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining long-term epidemiological trends and environmental determinants of rickettsioses incidence in Sri Lanka between

Sensitivity of simulations of Plio-Pleistocene climate with the CLIMBER-2 Earth System Model to details of the global carbon cycle.

The Earth system model CLIMBER-2 has been used in past work to successfully reproduce the glacial/interglacial cycles of the Plio-Pleistocene and the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) from predominantly 40 to 100 ky timescale oscillatory behavior as a function of declining volcanic outgassing and regolith removal. In this study, we further examine the sensitivity of this previous work to varying prescribed levels of volcanic outgassing and regolith extent and the long-term dynamics of the global carbon cycle, affecting the exchange and partitioning of carbon between different Earth system reser

Diversity, distribution, and climate change impacts on tick fauna in Saudi Arabia: A comprehensive ecological niche modeling approach.

Ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that serve as significant vectors of pathogens affecting human and animal health globally. Despite their medical and veterinary importance in Saudi Arabia-a region experiencing rapid socio-economic transformations-comprehensive documentation of tick diversity and distribution patterns remains fragmented. This study systematically documented tick diversity and predicted current and future distributions using ecological niche modeling (ENM). We conducted a systematic literature review spanning 1979-2023, compiling 205 geospatial records across Saudi

An intelligent autoregressive-distributed lag model: A climate-driven approach for predicting dengue fever incidence in Taiwan cities.

Dengue fever lacks specific treatments and vaccines. Its prevalent areas globally are mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, with its spread being strongly influenced by meteorological factors such as temperature and rainfall. Given the numerous influencing variables, an accurate prediction model is highly desirable to support anti-dengue control strategies. This study developed a climate-driven dengue fever model to predict the areas susceptible to dengue fever spread in Taiwan under current and future climate change. The data were sourced from the CDC's open platform in Kaohsiung City a

Climatic drivers of infectious diarrheal disease epidemics in China: An empirical dynamic modeling analysis of 21 million cases.

Infectious diarrheal diseases continue to impose a heavy public health burden in China, despite significant advancements in sanitation and economic development. While existing evidence has linked climate factors to the dynamics of these diseases, the heterogeneous climatic conditions and complex nonlinear interactions among meteorological variables give rise to intricate epidemic patterns that complicate the identification of causal drivers underlying the observed spatial and temporal variability in disease incidence. To address this gap, we conducted a nationwide study across 365 city-level r

Improving our understanding of future tropical cyclone intensities in the Caribbean using a high-resolution regional climate model.

The Caribbean region is prone to the strong winds and low air pressures of tropical cyclones and their corresponding storm surge that driving coastal flooding. To protect coastal communities from the impacts of tropical cyclones, it is important to understand how this impact of tropical cyclones might change towards the future. This study applies the storyline approach to show what tropical cyclones Maria (2017) and Dorian (2019) could look like in a 2 °C and 3.4 °C warmer future climate. These two possible future climates are simulated with a high-resolution regional climate model using the p

Ability of a dynamical climate sensitive disease model to reproduce historical Rift Valley Fever outbreaks over Africa.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a zoonosis transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, and is considered a priority pathogen by the WHO. RVF epidemics mostly occur in Africa and can decimate livestock herds, causing significant economic losses and posing health risks for humans. RVF transmission is associated with the occurrence of El Niño events that cause floods in eastern Africa and favour the emergence of mosquitoes in wetlands. Different risk models have been developed to forecast RVF transmission risk but very few studies have validated models at pan-African scale. This study aims to validate
