A Paradox of School Social Organization: Positive School Climate, Friendship Network Density, and Adolescent Violence.

Schools are often encouraged to foster a positive climate to reduce adolescent violence, but evidence on the effectiveness of this approach varies significantly. This study investigates the roots of this variation by testing alternative hypotheses about how positive school-level climate and school-level student friendship network density interact to shape adolescent violence perpetration. Research on informal social control and network closure suggests that the violence-reducing association of positive school climate will be enhanced among schools where students are more densely tied through t

Use of isotopes in examining precipitation patterns in north-central Ukraine.

North-central Ukraine is vulnerable to temperature increases and precipitation pattern changes associated with climate change. With water management becoming increasingly important, information on current water sources and moisture recycling is critically needed. Isotope ratios of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δ2H) in precipitation are sensitive to these variables and allow comparisons across the region. The δ2H and δ18O values from collected precipitation in Kyiv and Cherkasy in 2020 and published 3H data for Kyiv from the year 2000 show an influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and

Disrupting the Climate Distress Cascade: Testing Community-Grounded Theories of Change Using Secondary Data From a Cross-Sectional Canadian Study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is increasingly recognized as a source of significant psychological distress. How can we best minimize its mental health impacts? This study examines community-grounded theories of change by modelling how cognitive, emotional, and social processes shape climate-related psychological distress and adaptation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed Canadian adults, measuring climate change perceptions (reality, causes, consequences, and psychological distance), climate worry, psychological distress, climate change anxiety, resilience, social support, belonging, a

A multi-environment dataset consisting of official field trials for three major crops in the Nordic countries.

Climate change will substantially impact agriculture, requiring the development of new crop cultivars adapted for resilience to future stresses. Developing a new crop cultivar is a decades-long process. Therefore climate change considerations must already be incorporated into breeding programs. National breeding programs have typically involved field trials in a single country, which has functioned satisfactorily during periods of stable climate variability. However, it is widely acknowledged that when field trial information across borders is made available, it can significantly aid plant bre

A feminist community-based participatory action research approach to advance climate justice.

The purpose of this research is to develop and pilot a feminist informed community based participatory action research approach (f-CBPAR) to examine injustice. CBPAR is a collaborative approach between researchers and community members throughout the research process. F-CBPAR draws on both feminist theory and CBPAR literatures to identify power arrangements that contribute to environmental injustice. Using a f-CBPAR case study approach of primary interview data and descriptive secondary data, this exploratory study identifies climate threats of concern to a rural, farmworker community in Calif

Safety First! Residential Group Climate and Antisocial Behavior: A Multilevel Meta-analysis.

A systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis was performed (28 studies and 313 effect sizes) on the relation between residential group climate (i.e., safety, atmosphere, repression, support, growth, structure) and antisocial behavior, including aggression and criminal recidivism. A systematic search was conducted in PsychINFO, ERIC, and OVID Medline up to February 2023. Results showed a small but significant association (r = .20) between residential group climate and antisocial behavior, equivalent to a 23% reduction of antisocial behavior in all clients receiving care in a residential fac

Integrating oral health into planetary health governance: a framework for resilient and equitable oral healthcare.

Oral health is largely absent from climate-adaptation and planetary-health governance, even though oral health and oral healthcare depend on supplies of clean water, stable electricity, secure supply chains, and a retained workforce, which climate change is destabilizing. In this Perspective, we argue that this omission is a strategic failure for health security, and draw on the contrasting experiences of seven climate-exposed settings (Australia, Fiji, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, South Africa, and the United Kingdom) to show how environmental stressors disrupt progress in pro

Modelling the risk of Japanese encephalitis virus in Victoria, Australia, using an expert-systems approach.

Predictive models for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are instrumental to understanding the potential geographic spread of VBDs and therefore serve as useful tools for public health decision-making. However, predicting the emergence of VBDs at the micro-, local, and regional levels presents challenges, as the importance of risk factors can vary spatially and temporally depending on climatic factors and vector and host abundance and preferences. We propose an expert-systems-based approach that uses an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) deployed within a geographic information system (GIS), to pred

When the Going Gets Tough and the Environment Is Rough: The Role of Departmental Level Hostile Work Climate in the Relationships between Job Stressors and Workplace Bullying.

In line with the work environment hypothesis, the present study investigates whether department-level perceptions of hostile work climate moderate the relationship between psychosocial predictors of workplace bullying (i.e., role conflicts and workload) and exposure to bullying behaviours in the workplace. The data were collected among all employees in a Belgian university and constitutes of 1354 employees across 134 departments. As hypothesized, analyses showed positive main effects of role conflict and workload on exposure to bullying behaviours. In addition, the hypothesized strengthening e

One Health Approach for Mitigation of Impact of Climate Change on Early Childhood Development.

Climate change is an unavoidable process and its effects on the environment is varied in different geographies. In developing world, the effects of climate change have an enormous impact on young children. Climate change deeply impacts early childhood development, posing distinctive challenges to young children through disruptions in health resources, such as air, water, food, and shelter. These disruptions result in increased vulnerability to extreme weather events, respiratory diseases, malnutrition, and vector-borne illnesses, all of which can hinder physical, cognitive, and emotional growt

Different Tree Recruitment Patterns at Treelines Are Associated With the Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation Across the Northern Hemisphere.

Tree recruitment is one of the most critical processes in forest dynamics. However, prediction of forest dynamics is largely limited by a lack of understanding on how climate variability drives tree recruitment. Modes of large-scale atmospheric variability, such as the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO), exert a strong influence on climate and forest ecosystems worldwide. Yet, the linkages between forest dynamics and AMO at large spatial scales, particularly in climatically marginal tree populations such as treelines, remain unknown. Using field survey data from 68,011 trees at 120 treel

Environmental determinants of venom variability in captive scorpions: A comprehensive analysis of diet, temperature, and humidity effects.

This study examines the effects of environmental conditions on venom production in four prevalent scorpion species in Morocco: Androctonus amoreuxi, Androctonus mauretanicus, Buthus mardochei, and Scorpio maurus. The research focuses on how climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, and diet-specifically mealworm consumption-affect physical parameters including size and weight, and ultimately venom yield. We conducted a comprehensive investigation involving the capture, acclimatization, and systematic venom extraction from 480 scorpions. Our findings indicate considerable variations in ve

Public health significance of invasive mosquitoes in Europe.

There are currently five invasive Aedes mosquito species known to be established in Europe, namely Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti, Aedes japonicus, Aedes atropalpus and Aedes koreicus. Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are the incriminated vectors in the recent outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue fever in Europe. However, both laboratory experiments and field observations indicate that these invasive mosquitoes have a potential to also transmit other pathogens of public health importance. Increasing travel and pathogen introduction, expansion of vector distribution, and both environmental an

[Medical certification in workers involved in logging and wood-processing].

Activities involved in forestry and woodworking industry are associated with workers being exposed to numerous environmental and technology-related factors that are detrimental to their health. Such hazards include working in changeable climatic conditions, in the vicinity of heavy equipment, exposure to noise, chainsaw vibrations, enforced body positioning, hard physical work, the effect of exhaust gases, potential effects of biological factors, including epizootic diseases. Wood processing involves performing mechanical activities employing tools and machines, as well as processes utilizing

Transforming Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine to Address the Climate Crisis: A Call for Strategic Research and Advocacy.

OBJECTIVE: The climate crisis poses the largest threat to human health and survival and has been a public health emergency for many years. It is causing harmful consequences for physical and mental health and is amplifying existing health inequities. In this call to action, we highlight the relevance of the health psychology and behavioral medicine communities in addressing the health impacts of climate change. METHOD: We identify mitigation and adaptation climate health behaviors and social changes needed that underlie the three essential objectives to address climate change and its associat

Sex determination: where environment and genetics meet.

In mammals and birds the genetic constitution established at the time of fertilization determines the type of gonad that develops, whereas in all crocodilians and many turtles it is the temperature experienced during the mid-trimester of embryogenesis that initiates gonadal differentiation. Research with the red-eared slider suggests considerable conservation in the genetic cascades that underlie the sex determination process in vertebrates and, further, that the patterns of expression of these genes appear to reflect phylogenetic relationships, with turtles being more similar to mammals than

Malaria trends in Ethiopian highlands track the 2000 'slowdown' in global warming.

A counterargument to the importance of climate change for malaria transmission has been that regions where an effect of warmer temperatures is expected, have experienced a marked decrease in seasonal epidemic size since the turn of the new century. This decline has been observed in the densely populated highlands of East Africa at the center of the earlier debate on causes of the pronounced increase in epidemic size from the 1970s to the 1990s. The turnaround of the incidence trend around 2000 is documented here with an extensive temporal record for malaria cases for both Plasmodium falciparum

Incorporating climate projections in the environmental risk assessment of pesticides in aquatic ecosystems.

Global climate change will significantly impact the biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems, both directly and indirectly via the exacerbation of impacts from other stressors. Pesticides form a prime example of chemical stressors that are expected to synergize with climate change. Aquatic exposures to pesticides might change in magnitude due to increased runoff from agricultural fields, and in composition, as application patterns will change due to changes in pest pressures and crop types. Any prospective chemical risk assessment that aims to capture the influence of climate change should proper

Visual digital intermediaries and global climate communication: Is climate change still a distant problem on YouTube?

This article addresses the role of digital intermediaries in visual climate communication, and specifically their contribution to the persistence of a 'green ghetto' of traditional communicators and repertoires online. We argue for a comparative sensibility: global platforms convey global issues to global audiences, yet the same platform may distribute conditions of visibility for compelling communication unevenly around the world. The study analyses how a major global visual platform, YouTube (Search), articulates climate change in 232 countries in their official languages. It combines API re

Illusion of influence? Public participation in the preparation of climate policies in Finland.

Calls for acceptable climate policies render public participation central to climate policy planning. However, implementing participation remains challenging and often limited. To foster more effective and meaningful participation, it is essential to understand how participatory practices and efforts to develop them function in real-world policy processes. We develop this understanding by applying a systemic and relational approach that focuses on public participation as a collective and contextual phenomenon and integrate this with a normative 4D approach for evaluating participation through
