Subtypes of autism by cluster analysis based on structural MRI data.

The aim of our study was to subcategorize Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) using a multidisciplinary approach. Sixty four autistic patients (mean age 9.4+/-5.6 years) were entered into a cluster analysis. The clustering analysis was based on MRI data. The clusters obtained did not differ significantly in the overall severity of autistic symptomatology as measured by the total score on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). The clusters could be characterized as showing significant differences: Cluster 1: showed the largest sizes of the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum (CC), the low

The identification of pathological subtypes of Alzheimer's disease using cluster analysis.

A cluster analysis was performed on 78 cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to identify possible pathological subtypes of the disease. Data on 47 neuropathological variables, including features of the gross brain and the density and distribution of senile plaques (SP) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) were used to describe each case. Cluster analysis is a multivariate statistical method which combines together in groups, AD cases with the most similar neuropathological characteristics. The majority of cases (83%) were clustered into five such groups. The analysis suggested that an initial divisio

Quality assessment of cortex cinnamomi by HPLC chemical fingerprint, principle component analysis and cluster analysis.

HPLC fingerprint analysis, principle component analysis (PCA), and cluster analysis were introduced for quality assessment of Cortex cinnamomi (CC). The fingerprint of CC was developed and validated by analyzing 30 samples of CC from different species and geographic locations. Seventeen chromatographic peaks were selected as characteristic peaks and their relative peak areas (RPA) were calculated for quantitative expression of the HPLC fingerprints. The correlation coefficients of similarity in chromatograms were higher than 0.95 for the same species while much lower than 0.6 for different spe

Gambler clusters and problem gambling severity: A cluster analysis of Swedish gamblers accessing an online problem gambling screener.

It has been proposed that overall gambling involvement has a stronger association with problem gambling (PG) than any specific game type. However, few studies have used multiple analytic approaches on the same data set to assess these relationships. The aims of the current study were to identify patterns of gambling activity (PGAs) and to assess the relationships between different game types, PGAs, gambling involvement, and PG as measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), using two different approaches. In a sample of Swedish gamblers who screened their gambling habits at the Swed

FLOCK cluster analysis of mast cell event clustering by high-sensitivity flow cytometry predicts systemic mastocytosis.

OBJECTIVES: In our high-sensitivity flow cytometric approach for systemic mastocytosis (SM), we identified mast cell event clustering as a new diagnostic criterion for the disease. METHODS: To objectively characterize mast cell gated event distributions, we performed cluster analysis using FLOCK, a computational approach to identify cell subsets in multidimensional flow cytometry data in an unbiased, automated fashion. RESULTS: FLOCK identified discrete mast cell populations in most cases of SM (56/75 [75%]) but only a minority of non-SM cases (17/124 [14%]). FLOCK-identified mast cell popul

Identification of patient subgroups by hierarchical cluster analysis in femoral neck fractures and surgical outcome analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures are a heterogeneous entity with wide variability in patient profiles and outcomes. Single-variable classification may not capture the multidimensional interactions that influence prognosis. This study aimed to identify clinically meaningful patient subgroups using hierarchical cluster analysis and to compare mortality, postoperative mobility, and complication rates between these subgroups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 672 patients treated for intracapsular femoral neck fractures classified as AO Foundation/Orthopaedic Tra

Brain stimulation and VEGF concentrations: meta-analysis, meta-regression, and hierarchical cluster analysis of 200 correlations.

BACKGROUND: Studies on VEGF responses to brain stimulation (BS) are inconsistent. METHODS: We systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed these data. RESULTS: Overall meta-analyses for the three main models (time, group, time×group) showed no significant effects (p>0.05). Given the high heterogeneity across interventions and populations, we conducted extensive exploratory subgroup analyses to generate hypotheses. These revealed several within-subgroup effects, but they were based on limited data constraining their interpretability, with several single studies and others on 2-4 observations. Fo

Clinical phenotypes in α1-antitrypsin deficiency: a cluster analysis on EARCO data.

BACKGROUND: α-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a rare, monogenic disorder predisposing individuals to liver and lung diseases. Yet, even within the same genotype, AATD is very heterogeneous in clinical presentation. This heterogeneity suggests a complex interplay of environmental and (epi)genetic factors, highlighting the need for a detection and study of clinical phenotypes. METHODS: Here, we performed a cluster analysis using baseline data from the European Alpha-1 Research Collaboration (EARCO) to identify distinct clinical phenotypes in AATD. RESULTS: We identified six clusters of AATD

Cluster Analysis of VERDICT MRI for Cancer Tissue Characterization in Neuroendocrine Tumors.

Diffusion MRI models accounting for varying diffusion times and high b-values, such as VERDICT, hold potential for non-invasively characterizing tumor tissue types, potentially enabling improved tumor grading, and treatment evaluation. Furthermore, cluster analysis can aid in identifying multidimensional patterns in the diffusion MRI (dMRI) data that are not apparent when analyzing individual parameters in isolation. The aim of this study was to evaluate how well cluster analysis of VERDICT parameters can be used for intratumor tissue characterization compared to ADC in a mouse model of human

Uncovering drug targets for cluster headache through proteome-wide Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cluster headache (CH) is a highly disabling primary headache disorder with a complex underlying mechanism. However, there are currently no effective targeted therapeutic drugs available. Existing medications often have limited efficacy and numerous side effects, which frequently fail to meet clinical needs. This study aims to identify potential new therapeutic targets for CH through proteome-wide mendelian randomization (PWMR). METHODS: We used PWMR to estimate the causal effects of plasma proteins on CH. This analysis integrated plasma protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) data

Leveraging cluster analysis to compare click and chirp-evoked auditory brainstem responses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) can be recorded by presenting short-duration click and chirp stimuli. The ABR test is commonly used for threshold estimation and to examine auditory brainstem integrity. The neural integrity is evaluated at suprathreshold levels. This study aimed to compare click and CE-Chirp®-evoked ABRs recorded at suprathreshold levels in normal-hearing infants and adults, using cluster analysis to identify patterns and distinctions between responses to the two stimuli. METHODS: Click-evoked and CE-Chirp® evoked ABRs were recorded from infants

Asymptotic analysis of particle cluster formation in the presence of anchoring sites.

The aggregation or clustering of proteins and other macromolecules plays an important role in the formation of large-scale molecular assemblies within cell membranes. Examples of such assemblies include lipid rafts, and postsynaptic domains (PSDs) at excitatory and inhibitory synapses in neurons. PSDs are rich in scaffolding proteins that can transiently trap transmembrane neurotransmitter receptors, thus localizing them at specific spatial positions. Hence, PSDs play a key role in determining the strength of synaptic connections and their regulation during learning and memory. Recently, a two
