Identifying accident prone areas and the contributing environmental factors can save lives and enhance infrastructure durability. This research presents an innovative use of two hierarchical clustering methods (Agglomerative Hierarchical and BIRCH clustering algorithms) to detect accident hotspots with high accident rates on the Yazd-Kerman road, in Iran. These approaches identified clusters of accidents, highlighting significant clusters and categorizing their overlap as two accident prone areas. The high percentage of overlapping results from both methods indicates a high level of consistenc

Kidney transplant recipients face a high cardiovascular risk, which is a leading cause of death in this patient group. This article proposes the application of clustering techniques and feature selection to predict the survival outcomes of kidney transplant recipients based on machine learning techniques and mainstream statistical methods. First, feature selection techniques (Boruta, Random Survival Forest and Elastic Net) are used to detect the most relevant variables. Subsequently, each set of variables obtained by each feature selection technique is used as input for the clustering algorith

In the past decade, high-dimensional single-cell technologies have revolutionized basic and translational immunology research and are now a key element of the toolbox used by scientists to study the immune system. However, analysis of the data generated by these approaches often requires clustering algorithms and dimensionality reduction representation, which are computationally intense and difficult to evaluate and optimize. Here, we present Cytometry Clustering Optimization and Evaluation (Cyclone), an analysis pipeline integrating dimensionality reduction, clustering, evaluation, and optimi

The analysis of Smart Electricity Meter (SEM) data, which plays an important role in sustainability of the electricity system. The widespread use SEM generates a substantial volume of data. However, when faced with an influx of new data, traditional clustering methods require re-clustering all the data from scratch. To address the challenge of handling the ever-increasing data, an incremental clustering algorithm proves to be the most suitable choice. Proposed Closeness-based Gaussian Mixture Incremental Clustering (CGMIC) Algorithm updates load patterns without relying on overall daily load c

MOTIVATION: The presence of tumor cell clusters in pleural effusion may be a signal of cancer metastasis. The instance segmentation of single cell from cell clusters plays a pivotal role in cluster cell analysis. However, current cell segmentation methods perform poorly for cluster cells due to the overlapping/touching characters of clusters, multiple instance properties of cells, and the poor generalization ability of the models.
RESULTS: In this article, we propose a contour constraint instance segmentation framework (CC framework) for cluster cells based on a cluster cell combination enhan

Evidence of the pharmacological activity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides the basis for clinical prescription. Study of the classification of Chinese medicines according to these activities is key to understanding the general active tendencies of medicinal prescriptions, exploring their material basis, investigating their properties and searching for their alternatives. Taking the herbal classic Shennong's Materia Medica Classic (Shennong Bencao Jing) for the data source, this paper studied the classification of Chinese medicines based on semi-supervised incremental clustering al

LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation is a rapidly developing task that unifies object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation. However, it requires both semantic and instance annotations, which are costly and labor-intensive to obtain. In this work, we propose a novel framework for LiDAR point cloud panoptic segmentation, which requires only a tiny proportion (e.g., 1% or fewer) of semantic labels and eliminates the need for any manual instance label. Specifically, we first adopt an active labeling strategy to annotate a small subset of the semantic labels. Then, we desi

Biomedical literature can offer valuable information for organizing genes associated with the etiology and pathogenesis of disease. In this study, we demonstrate the utility of existing phylogenetic methods for organizing 375 genes associated with Breast Cancer using the MeSH annotations from over 35,000 Medline articles. Specifically, we compare the clustering (using the Colless Imbalance Index, Ic) of distance-based methods, which are used by popular phylogenetic clustering algorithms, and a character- based method (Maximum Parsimony) that is commonly used for phylogenetic studies. Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a crucial strategy to combat AMR. Using routine surveillance data, we could detect and control hospital outbreaks of AMR bacteria as early as possible. Previously, we developed a framework for automatic detection of clusters of AMR bacteria using SaTScan, a free cluster detection tool integrated into WHONET. WHONET is a free software used globally for microbiological surveillance data management. We applied this framework to data from the Japan Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (JANIS), one of the world's most comprehensive and largest nationa

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite the availability of treatments for alcohol use disorder (AUD), relapse prevalence and health-related consequences associated with AUD remains high. Using data-driven approaches that enhance generalizability can help elucidate relationships between treatment outcomes and alcohol consumption, aiding in the discovery of novel treatment targets for AUD subtypes.
METHODS: We merged data (n = 2045) across four Phase 2 randomized clinical trials affiliated with the NIAAA Clinical Investigations Group and a Phase 3 trial (NIAAA Sponsored). Participants were clustere

OBJECTIVE: Infants hospitalized with bronchiolitis may experience persistent symptoms linked to future chronic lung diseases like bronchiectasis. Identifying phenotypes during hospitalization could guide targeted interventions. As traditional clustering requires large datasets, this study explores whether Unsupervised Feature Extraction Algorithms (UFEAs) and clustering can identify high-risk profiles in a small dataset of Indigenous infants.
METHODS: We included 128 Indigenous infants hospitalized with bronchiolitis at the Royal Darwin Hospital, Northern Territory, Australia. Eight UEFAs wer

Modeling multiple sampling densities within a hierarchical framework enables borrowing of information across samples. These "density random effects" can act as kernels in latent variable models to represent exchangeable subgroups or clusters. A key feature of these kernels is the (functional) covariance they induce, which determines how densities are grouped in mixture models. Our motivating problem is clustering chromatin accessibility profiles from high-throughput DNase-seq experiments to detect transcription factor (TF) binding. TF binding typically produces footprint profiles with spatial

Spatial cluster detection is widely used in fields such as epidemiology and environmental science to identify spatial units that exhibit patterns differing from background variation. While traditional methods like spatial scan statistics are effective in detecting clusters, they often lack tools to quantify and visualize the uncertainty surrounding detected clusters. In this work, we propose a novel framework for constructing confidence sets for spatial clusters, applicable to both Poisson and Normal models. Building on likelihood-based methods, we leverage the p value of the likelihood ratio

Single-molecule localisation based super-resolution fluorescence imaging produces maps of the coordinates of fluorescent molecules in a region of interest. Cluster analysis algorithms provide information concerning the clustering characteristics of these molecules, often through the generation of cluster heat maps based on local molecular density. The goal of this study was to generate a new cluster analysis method based on a topographic approach. In particular, a topographic map of the level of clustering across a region is generated based on Getis' variant of Ripley's K-function. By using th

Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and despite extensive research, uncertainties persist regarding its treatment outcomes due to the diversity of the condition and characteristics across patients. Identifying subpopulations of sepsis patients with distinct clinical behaviors can be instrumental in developing more targeted and effective interventions. In this study, we build on previous work that applied clustering techniques to the large cohort single-hospital MIMIC-III intensive care unit (ICU) database by extending the analysis to the larger cohort multi-hospital eI

Targeted protein degradation (TPD) mediated by proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) has emerged as a powerful therapeutic strategy, enabling the catalytic and selective elimination of disease-relevant proteins via the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Despite their ability to overcome drug resistance and address traditionally undruggable targets, the structural complexity and vast chemical diversity of PROTACs present challenges for systematic analysis and rational design. Here, we present a systematic unsupervised machine-learning framework that represents the first large-scale similarity-driv

Single-cell proteomic data generated by mass spectrometry-based technologies provide direct insights into cellular functional states and have become increasingly important for revealing cellular heterogeneity in complex biological systems. Accurate clustering of such data is essential for identifying functionally distinct cell subpopulations and understanding biological processes such as immune responses, tumor heterogeneity, and cell fate regulation. However, mass spectrometry-based single-cell proteomic data are often characterized by high dimensionality, measurement noise, technical bias, a
