Characteristics of the cement-solidified municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

Cement solidification is an important pre-treatment technology for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash into landfill. The physicochemical properties and leaching characteristics are the foundation for assessing the long-term stability of the fly ash solidified with benchmark cement in landfills. The leaching performances of bulk components (Na, K, Ca, Cl, CO32-, and SO42-) and heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed based on the percolation column test and pH dependent test respectively. The research showed that in the cement-solidified fly ash, Na and K were mainly i

Characterising boiler ash from a circulating fluidised bed municipal solid waste incinerator and distribution of PCDD/F and PCB.

In this study, ash samples were collected from five locations situated in the boiler of a circulating fluidised bed municipal solid waste incinerator (high- and low-temperature superheater, evaporator tubes and upper and lower economiser). These samples represent a huge range of flue gas temperatures and were characterised for their particle size distribution, surface characteristics, elemental composition, chemical forms of carbon and chlorine and distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), dibenzofurans (PCDF) and biphenyls (PCB). Enrichment of chlorine, one of the main element

Solidification/stabilization and leaching behavior of PbCl₂ in fly-ash hydrated silicate matrix and fly-ash geopolymer matrix.

Fly ash (FA) for reuse as a construction material is activated using two methods, to produce hydrated silicate and geopolymer gels. We investigated the solidification/stabilization and leaching behavior of PbCl2 in a geopolymer matrix (GM) and hydrated silicate matrix (HSM), based on FA as the source material, to evaluate the environmental and health risks. The GM and HSM synthetic conditions were 60 °C, 20 % relative humidity (RH), and 12 wt% (6 mol/L) NaOH, and 20 ± 2 °C, ≥ 90 % RH, and 30 wt.%, respectively, based on their compressive strength performances. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed th

Study on Carbon Removal from Coal Gangue to Purify Kaolin by Flotation with Different Collectors.

In order to explore the effects of carbon chain length of nonpolar saturated hydrocarbons and the type of polar groups on coal gangue flotation, five saturated hydrocarbons with different carbon chain lengths and seven hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives with different groups were selected for flotation. The results show that the flotation effect is better when the number of carbon atoms in the carbon chain exceeds 13. Oxygen-containing functional groups possess greater electronegativity and polarity compared to hydrocarbon groups, resulting in better flotation performance. Collectors con

Cement kiln dusts as a selenium source in sheep rations.

Cement dust has been found to be a source of selenium when included in the rations of sheep. In the work reported, rations including 3% by weight of cement dusts were fed to sheep for 165 days. The dust were taken from 3 collectors located at progressively greater distances from the coal-fired end of the kiln. Selenium levels and blood and tissues of the animals fed the cement dusts increased significantly above those of the control sheep. No tissue abnormalities were observed in animals receiving any of the treatment rations. The source of selenium is believed to derive from its content of fl

Toward low NaOH and silicate concentrations for alkali-activated municipal solid waste incineration fly ash.

Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash (MSWIFA) is a hazardous waste characterized by a high concentration of heavy metals and a high soluble fraction of salts. It is commonly stabilised by the addition of cement. This paper proposes an alternative method of solidification/stabilisation involving room-temperature alkali activation as a low-carbon, cement-free solution. This industrially feasible method retains a waste content of over 50 wt% in the wet mix and uses the low concentrations of NaOH and sodium silicates to activate the material by adding Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GG

Utilizing fly ash, micro-silica fume, and electric arc slag in geopolymer concrete: a mechanical and cost perspective.

Cement manufacturing is one of the prominent sources of carbon emissions. This is owing to the calcination required in the manufacture of cement, which releases carbon dioxide. Additionally, fossil fuel usage in the form of fuel oil or natural gas is required in huge amounts to heat the kilns at high temperatures. This has created severe environmental worries regarding the environmental impact associated with the manufacture of cement. Studies have explored that the strength characteristics of geopolymer concrete (GPC) utilizing Class C fly ash (FA) and cured at ambient temperature have been c

Machine learning-driven multi-objective optimization of sustainable engineered cementitious composites: Balancing performance and CO2 reduction via municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWIBA).

This study addresses the dual challenge of enhancing the mechanical performance and environmental sustainability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) by replacing natural sand with Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Bottom Ash (MSWIBA). Fifteen ECC mixtures were experimentally tested across varying W/B ratios (0.24-0.30) and BA replacement levels (0-100%). Results showed BA inclusion decreased flowability and strength, with compressive strength dropping from 74.1 MPa (control) to 32.7 MPa (full replacement at W/B = 0.24). Optimal experimental performance, characterized by robust strain-

Sustainable self-compacting concrete incorporating fly ash and rice husk ash: experimental, statistical, and environmental assessment.

The manufacturing process of normal concrete is highly responsible for producing carbon dioxide, resulting in a larger carbon footprint, thus leading to the need for alternative materials to be used in the construction industry. The current research focuses on analyzing the impact and effect of the addition of fly ash (FA) and rice husk ash (RHA) as partial substitution of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in high-performance self-compacting concrete (SCC). The study evaluates the fresh properties (slump flow, L-box, and V-funnel), mechanical properties (compressive, split tensile, and flexural s

Mechanochemical treatment of incinerated municipal bottom ash in CO2-rich environment for sustainable waste management practices.

Incineration of the municipal solid waste produces huge amounts of fly and bottom ash annually. Added-value utilization of those ashes has been of great interest to many researchers worldwide. In this line, this study examined incinerated municipal solid waste under various milling conditions and in presence of CO2 environment. Thermogravimetric analysis of samples milled under air atmosphere revealed higher content of portlandite of finer particle size as observed in scanning electron microscopy images. In contrast, samples milled under CO2 environment demonstrated the presence of dolomite th

Influence of biomass ashes on the structural evolution and oxygen-donating capacity of red mud during chemical looping gasification.

To efficiently convert the biomass wastes, chemical looping gasification has been proposed as a highly effective method to produce hydrogen-rich syngas. The lattice oxygens in oxygen carriers can supplant molecular oxygens, thereby improving syngas quality. However, the complex interactions between oxygen carrier and biomass ash are inevitable, obviously affecting reactivity of oxygen carrier. In this work, red mud, a solid waste rich in Fe2O3, was selected as oxygen carrier and biomass feedstocks with distinct differences in ash composition and content were used. The findings demonstrate a ro

Critical parameters affecting the thermal resistance of alkali-activated aluminosilicate wastes: Current understanding and future directions.

Many research articles and reviews have recognized alkali-activated materials (AAMs) as eco-friendly alternative binders to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) due to their economic andenvironmental advantages. However, few literature surveys reported the physical, mechanical and microstructural changes that occur after the exposure of AAMs to elevated temperatures. Owing to the wide diversity in the properties of aluminosilicates, alkali-activation conditions, and additives, a deep survey is needed to understand how different factors can affect the performance of AAMs under elevated temperatures.

Preparation of amino-functionalized fly ash based tobermorite for enhanced removal of Cr(VI).

Amino-functionalized fly ash based tobermorite (NH2-FAT) was prepared via a two-step process including a hydrothermal preparation of fly ash based tobermorite (FAT) from fly ash (FA) and the impregnation of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The characteristics of FA, FAT, and NH2-FAT were systematically measured. The removal capacity of Cr(VI) by FAT and NH2-FAT were comparatively studied. The results indicated that the NH2-FAT presented excellent removal efficiency towards Cr(VI) in the condition of pH of 2. The adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) by NH2-FAT in this study was up to 498.39 mg/g

Leaching mechanisms of heavy metals from fly ash stabilised soils.

Fly ash is an industrial waste material that is repurposed as a soil stabiliser worldwide. In Thailand, many ground improvement projects utilise mixtures of cement and fly ash to stabilise weak soils. In this study, leaching mechanisms of arsenic, chromium, lead, and zinc from cement and fly ash stabilised soils were investigated in the laboratory. Leaching tests were performed, with different leachants and pH conditions, on cement and fly ash stabilised soils used for soil improvement in road embankment construction projects in Northern Thailand. The results suggested that chemical compounds

Reuse of process water in a waste-to-energy plant: An Italian case of study.

The minimisation of water consumption in waste-to-energy (WtE) plants is an outstanding issue, especially in those regions where water supply is critical and withdrawals come from municipal waterworks. Among the various possible solutions, the most general, simple and effective one is the reuse of process water. This paper discusses the effectiveness of two different reuse options in an Italian WtE plant, starting from the analytical characterisation and the flow-rate measurement of fresh water and process water flows derived from each utility internal to the WtE plant (e.g. cooling, bottom as

Geochemically structural characteristics of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash particles and mineralogical surface conversions by chelate treatment.

Leaching behaviors of heavy metals contained in municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash have been studied well. However, micro-characteristics of MSWI fly ash particles are still uncertain and might be non-negligible to describe their leaching behaviors. Therefore, this study investigated micro-characteristics of MSWI fly ash particles, especially their structural properties and impacts of chelate treatment on surface characteristics. According to SEM observations, raw fly ash particles could be categorized into four types based on their shapes. Because chelate treatment changed the

Soluble salt removal from MSWI fly ash and its stabilization for safer disposal and recovery as road basement material.

Fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI) is classified as hazardous in the European Waste Catalogue. Proper stabilization processes should be required before any management option is put into practice. Due to the inorganic nature of MSWI fly ash, cementitious stabilization processes are worthy of consideration. However, the effectiveness of such processes can be severely compromised by the high content of soluble chlorides and sulphates. In this paper, a preliminary washing treatment has been optimized to remove as much as possible soluble salts by employing as little as possible
