[Coffee and caffeine. Various selected aspects for everyday practice].

Moderate consumption of methylxanthines, for example in coffee, tea, cola-drinks and other foodstuffs containing caffeine, is probably without particular health risks, insofar as other risk factors (smoking, alcohol, nutrition in general) can be kept under control. To avoid prohibition on one hand and to evaluate necessary restrictions concerning caffeine consumption individually on the other hand is an artful task in daily medical practice. Coffee is one of the chemically most complex consumables, and its physiologic effects are accordingly complex and to a great deal still unknown. Caffeine

Inhibitory effect of coffee on lower esophageal sphincter pressure.

We examined the effect of 150 ml of caffeinated instant coffee at two pHs, 4.5 and 7.0, on lower esophageal sphincter pressure in 20 normal volunteers and 16 patients with reflux esophagitis. When ingested alone coffee at pH 4.5 and 7.0 caused a decrease in basal sphincter pressure in normal volunteers from 19.4 +/- 1.5 to 13.7 +/- 1.0 mmHg (P ¿ 0.01) and from 18.7 +/- 1.5 to 16.0 +/- 0.8 mmHg (P < 0.05) respectively. When coffee at pH 4.5 was drunk with a mixed nutrient test meal, the resting sphincter pressure in normal subjects fell after 30-60 min with the nadir, 11.2 +/- 1.0 mmHg, being r

Coffee Pulp, a By-Product of Coffee Production, Modulates Gut Microbiota and Improves Metabolic Syndrome in High-Carbohydrate, High-Fat Diet-Fed Rats.

Waste from food production can be re-purposed as raw material for usable products to decrease industrial waste. Coffee pulp is 29% of the dry weight of coffee cherries and contains caffeine, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, diterpenes and fibre. We investigated the attenuation of signs of metabolic syndrome induced by high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet in rats by dietary supplementation with 5% freeze-dried coffee pulp for the final 8 weeks of a 16-week protocol. Coffee pulp decreased body weight, feed efficiency and abdominal fat; normalised systolic blood pressure, left ventricular diastolic st

Immune modulation in response to coffee intake: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Coffee consumption has been associated with various health benefits; however, the underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the acute effects of coffee on circulating cytokines and the specific role of caffeine compared with the whole coffee matrix are still insufficiently characterised in humans. To our knowledge, no previous human study has directly compared immune modulation by coffee versus caffeine alone. We therefore aimed to elucidate the effect of a usual caffeine dose of 130 mg on postprandial cytokine secretion, and whether responses differ be

Coffee Biotransformation in Volcanic Process: A Chemical and Sensory Analysis.

Volcanic fermentation is an innovative technique in post-harvest coffee processing that involves forming conical mounds, called "volcanoes", to create specific biotransformation conditions. This study investigates the impact of different volcano fermentation methods on the chemical composition and sensory attributes of coffee. Four methods were evaluated: asphalt patio (E1), on pallets (E2), in steel containers under the sun (E3), and in steel containers in the shade (E4). The chemical composition was analyzed in terms of sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose), organic acids (citric, malic, succi

Dietary enhancement of coffee with folic acid: A nutritional approach.

Folic acid deficiency is a critical public health concern that affects millions worldwide, particularly women of reproductive age, infants and others. The deficiency causes severe health consequences such as neural tube defects, homocysteine imbalance and megaloblastic anemia, often associated with cobalamin deficiency. Because of coffee's global popularity, it offers a promising platform for delivering folic acid. Adding folic acid to coffee could boost its nutritional value and provide synergistic health benefits, including helping to counteract coffee-related increases in homocysteine level

Coffee consumption and cardiometabolic health: a comprehensive review of the evidence.

This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of longitudinal observational and interventional studies on the cardiometabolic effects of coffee consumption. It explores biological mechanisms, and clinical and policy implications, and highlights gaps in the evidence while suggesting future research directions. It also reviews evidence on the causal relationships between coffee consumption and cardiometabolic outcomes from Mendelian randomization (MR) studies. Findings indicate that while coffee may cause short-term increases in blood pressure, it does not contribute to long-term hypertension r

Characterization and bioactivities of coffee husks extract encapsulated with polyvinylpyrrolidone.

Coffee processing generates large amounts of residues of which a portion still has bioactive properties due to their richness in phenolic compounds. This study aimed to obtain a coffee husks extract (CHE) and to encapsulate it (ECHE) with polyvinylpyrrolidone using a one-step procedure of solid dispersion. The extraction and encapsulation yields were 9.1% and 92%, respectively. Thermal analyses revealed that the encapsulation increased the thermal stability of CHE and dynamic light scattering analyses showed a bimodal distribution of size with 81% of the ECHE particles measuring approximately

Association of prenatal exposure to acetaminophen and coffee with childhood asthma.

PURPOSE: Some studies have suggested that maternal acetaminophen use during pregnancy is associated with asthma in the offspring, and coffee consumption may modify the toxicity of acetaminophen. We aim to examine whether pregnancy maternal acetaminophen use increases the risk for offspring asthma, and whether such a potential association could be modified by maternal coffee consumption. METHODS: We included 63,652 live-born singletons enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort. Maternal acetaminophen use and coffee consumption during pregnancy were assessed prospectively via the enrolment q

An epidemiological study of the association of coffee with chronic liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic liver disease affects 855 people per million in the UK. Previous studies have reported that coffee appears protective against the development of abnormal liver enzymes, hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis. The aim of this study, the first in a Scottish population, was to compare coffee consumption in patients with liver disease and that of control populations to determine correlations between coffee intake and the incidence of non-cancerous liver disease and with Child's-Pugh and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) scores. METHODS AND RESULTS: Two hundred and eigh

Solving the puzzle of strong French coffee, palpitation and dizziness.

A 38-year-old gentleman presented to the emergency department at the University Hospital in Geneva with nausea, rapid palpitation and presyncope. This was followed by a poor night's sleep, a day of strenuous walking in the city and drinking a large quantity of strong French coffee. 12-lead ECG revealed tachycardia with slightly increased QRS duration of right bundle branch block pattern and left axis deviation. Without the electrophysiological (EP) study, the patient was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia. On return to Edinburgh, he was investigated under the EP study, which confirmed

Prevention of rat liver fibrosis and carcinogenesis by coffee and caffeine.

Coffee has been inversely related to the incidence of human liver disease; however, whether caffeine is the component responsible for the beneficial effects of coffee remains controversial. This study evaluated the beneficial effects of coffee or caffeine in a medium-term bioassay for rat liver fibrosis/carcinogenesis induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). One week after the DEN injection, the groups started to receive conventional coffee, instant coffee or 0.1% caffeine ad libitum for 24 weeks. The groups receiving conventional coffee or caffeine presented a sign

Coffee and tea consumption and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma in Italy.

The role of coffee in the aetiology of hepatocellular carcinoma has raised great interest. In Italy, coffee consumption is high, thus allowing the investigation of the topic over a broad range of consumption. A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Italy in 1999-2002, including 185 incidents, histologically confirmed cases of hepatocellular carcinoma aged 43-84 years. Controls were 412 subjects admitted to the same hospitals' networks for acute, non-neoplastic diseases unrelated to diet. Coffee and tea consumption were assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire. Odds

Coffee and fetal death: a cohort study with prospective data.

The authors conducted a cohort study within the Danish National Birth Cohort to determine whether coffee consumption during pregnancy is associated with late fetal death (spontaneous abortion and stillbirth). A total of 88,482 pregnant women recruited from March 1996 to November 2002 participated in a comprehensive interview on coffee consumption and potentially confounding factors in pregnancy. Information on pregnancy outcome was obtained from the National Hospital Discharge Register and medical records. The authors detected 1,102 fetal deaths. High levels of coffee consumption were associat

Coffee and cancer: a review of epidemiological studies, 1990-1999.

Epidemiological studies on the relation between coffee consumption and cancer risk have been mainly focused on cancers of the urinary bladder, pancreas and colorectum. The relation between coffee and bladder cancer is controversial, despite a large number of studies published over the last three decades. In most studies, the risk tends to be higher in coffee drinkers than in those who do not drink coffee, but the excess risk is generally moderate and is neither dose- nor duration-related. Thus, a strong association between coffee drinking and bladder cancer can be excluded, although it is stil

Effects of coffee cherry on the immune system in SHN mice.

Previously, we found that chronic ingestion of the extract of coffee cherry (CC), the residue after the removal of coffee beans, induced a marked suppression of the development and the growth of spontaneous mammary tumours in a high mammary tumour strain of SHN mice. As a possible step to clarify the mechanism of this effect, the immunomodulating role of CC was examined in this study. CC treatment resulted in significant weight gain in the spleen. CC treated experimental mice showed a significant decrease in the proportion of immature (CD4+8+) thymocytes and an increase in the percentages of m

[Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis caused by the dust of green coffee beans].

In a 37-year-old worker employed in a coffee roastery who suffered from work-related rhinoconjunctivitis, allergologic investigations demonstrated sensitization to the dust of the green, unroasted coffee bean. This particular allergy is uncommon in Switzerland. The case is discussed and the literature on the subject is reviewed.

Staining of resin-based veneering materials with coffee and tea.

Two light-activated, and three heat-polymerized, resin-based veneering materials were exposed to boiled coffee, filtered coffee, or tea at 50 degrees C and evaluated for color stability. Specimens immersed in distilled water in the dark at 37 degrees C for 4 months were also assessed. One of the light-activated, resin-based veneering materials underwent intrinsic discoloration during the long-term immersion both in distilled water and in the staining solutions. The discoloration of the other materials by tea was mainly due to surface adsorption of the colorants. Discoloration by coffee was due

Coffee and methylxanthines and breast cancer: a case-control study.

A dietary case-control study based on 818 newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC) patients was conducted in Israel between 1975 and 1978. The role of coffee and total methylxanthine intake from coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, and cocoa drinks was evaluated in the BC patients as compared to that in two matched control populations [surgical controls (SC) and neighborhood controls (NC)]. Because it has been suggested that caffeine enhances mammary carcinogenesis in rats fed high polyunsaturated fat diets, analysis was done also in relation to fat consumption. When comparison was done to both matched con
