Tinnitus-on the interplay between emotion and cognition.

Subjective tinnitus (hereafter tinnitus) is often considered and studied as a perceptual phenomenon. Accordingly, various abnormalities in the area of cognitive processing have been reported in patients with tinnitus. At the same time, the disorder is characterized by considerable emotional distress, which is associated with a high comorbidity of affective disorders. Here, we aim to outline the close link between cognition and emotion, and how current research from the field of cognitive neuroscience examines the processing and acquisition of emotional stimuli. The emotional valence of stimuli

Nicotine's effect on cognition, a friend or foe?

Tobacco smoking is a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Smoking comes in form of absorption of many compounds, among which nicotine is the main psychoactive component of tobacco and its positive and negative reinforcement effects are proposed to be the key mechanism for the initiation and maintenance of smoking. Growing evidence suggests that the cognitive enhancement effects of nicotine may also contribute to the difficulty of quitting smoking, especially in individuals with psychiatric disorders. In this review, we first introduce the beneficial effect of nico

Angiotensin Receptor Blockers and Cognition: a Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an overview of the association between angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) use and cognitive outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: ARBs have previously shown greater neuroprotection compared to other anti-hypertensive classes. The benefits are primarily attributed to the ARB's effect on modulating the renin-angiotensin system via inhibiting the Ang II/AT1R pathway and activating the Ang II/AT2R, Ang IV/AT4R, and Ang-(1-7)/MasR pathways. These interactions are associated with pleiotropic neurocognitive benefits, including reduced β-amyloid accumulation and abnormal hyperph

A Systematic Review of Cognition in Cervical Dystonia.

Growing evidence points to a spectrum of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive difficulties that have a greater impact on functional outcomes and quality of life than motor symptoms in cervical dystonia (CD). Some cognitive impairments have been reported; however, findings are inconsistent, and described across mixed groups of dystonia. The current review aimed to examine the evidence for cognitive impairments in CD. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO and Web of Science databases were searched. Studies were included if they met the following criteria (i) cross-sectional or longitudinal studies of ad

A study on meta-parenting: Yemeni parental cognition.

Over the past decade, a plethora of research stressed the importance of understanding parental cognition, including meta-parenting. The existing literature echoed a wide range of parental variations accredited more to a child's psychological attainment and parental social cognition of implicit elements, such as beliefs, emotions, values, and culture. However, increasing contemporary research is warranted to diagnose deliberate and mindful parenting constructs. This topic has not been widely examined in Yemen and Arab countries. Given this gap, the main aim of this study was to assess the relat

Social Cognition in Adult ADHD: A Systematic Review.

The aim of this systematic review was to collect and align the research on social cognition impairments in adults with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In particular, we selected and analyzed papers on emotion recognition and processing, Theory of Mind (TOM), empathy, and other facets of social cognition as decision making. We identified 16 papers published between 2012 and 2022 which meet inclusion criteria. Papers search, selection, and extraction followed the PRISMA guidelines. In order to summarize data from papers, we used a narrative synthesis approach. Results show diffe

Cognition in Trinucleotide Repeat Spinocerebellar Ataxias: A Review.

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) comprise a group of complex and heterogeneous hereditary neurodegenerative disorders characterized by cerebellar ataxia, with ophthalmoplegia, pyramidal and extrapyramidal features, peripheral neuropathy, motor neuron disease, pigmentary retinopathy, epilepsy, and dementia in varying proportions. Cognitive impairment is not frequent in SCAs but is rarely noticed since it gets camouflaged behind the exorbitant ataxic manifestations of the disease. The exact incidence and extent of cognitive impairment in these rare disorders are not known due to the heterogeneity

Balance and Cognition in Male Collegiate Lacrosse Players.

Concussion screening among collegiate lacrosse athletes is a major safety priority. Although attention has been directed at concussion management following injury, less is known about the association between cognition and balance during preseason screening. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between balance and neurocognition among collegiate male lacrosse players and to examine predictive determinants of postural stability. Participants included a convenience sample of 49 male collegiate Division 3 lacrosse players who completed a demographic survey and performed the imme

Identifying Sleep Biomarkers to Evaluate Cognition in HIV.

Sleep disturbance and cognitive impairment represent two of the most common and debilitating conditions facing seropositive (HIV+) individuals who are otherwise well controlled with antiretroviral therapy. Sleep-assessment-based biomarkers represent an important step towards improving our understanding of the unique mechanistic features that may link sleep disruption and cognition in HIV+ individuals, ultimately leading to advancements in treatment and management options. In this study, a risk score was computed via a generalized linear model (GLM), which optimally combines polysomnography (PS

From conifers to cognition: Microbes, brain and behavior.

A diversity of bacteria, protozoans and viruses ("endozoites") were recently uncovered within healthy tissues including the human brain. By contrast, it was already recognized a century ago that healthy plants tissues contain abundant endogenous microbes ("endophytes"). Taking endophytes as an informative precedent, we overview the nature, prevalence, and role of endozoites in mammalian tissues, centrally focusing on the brain, concluding that endozoites are ubiquitous in diverse tissues. These passengers often remain subclinical, but they are not silent. We address their routes of entry, mech

Bimanual Gesture Imitation Links to Cognition and Olfaction.

OBJECTIVES: Given the need to detect subclinical changes in brain health that sometimes occur with aging in apparently healthy older adults, we assessed whether bimanual gesture imitation performance, simple to assess clinically, can detect age effects and alterations in cognition, olfaction, and movement. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging. PARTICIPANTS: Men and women, aged 22 to 101 years, without cognitive impairment, dementia, stroke, Parkinson disease, resting tremor, abnormal muscle tone, or abnormal coordination (N = 507). MEASUREMENTS: Bim

Examining cognition across the bipolar/schizophrenia diagnostic spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments are well-established features of schizophrenia, but there is ongoing debate about the nature and degree of cognitive impairment in patients with schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. We hypothesized that there is a spectrum of increasing impairment from bipolar disorder to schizoaffective disorder bipolar type, to schizoaffective disorder depressive type and schizophrenia. METHODS: We compared performance on the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery between participants with sch

[Neuropsychology of Tourette's disorder: cognition, neuroimaging and creativity].

INTRODUCTION: Tourette's disorder is the result of fronto-striatal brain dysfunction affecting people of all ages, with a debut in early childhood and continuing into adolescence and adulthood. DEVELOPMENT: This article reviews the main cognitive, functional neuroimaging and creativity-related studies in a disorder characterized by an excess of dopamine in the brain. CONCLUSIONS: Given the special cerebral configuration of these patients, neuropsychological alterations, especially in executive functions, should be expected. However, the findings are inconclusive and are conditioned by factor

Precipitous Deterioration of Motor Function, Cognition, and Behavior.

A 72-year-old woman developed new-onset depression, sustained an unexplained fall, and started walking cautiously. After 1 year, her depression resolved but she developed a dry cough. One year later, she experienced a more rapid decline in her gait with parkinsonism, visual difficulties with restricted vertical gaze, slowed horizontal and vertical saccades, dysphagia, apathy, and progressive cognitive decline, which led to her death 2 years later. The differential diagnosis, neuroimaging, and pathological findings are discussed, as well as their public health implications.

Klotho Is a Neuroprotective and Cognition-Enhancing Protein.

In this chapter, we will describe what has been learned about Klotho and its potential functions in the brain. Klotho is localized in the choroid plexus and, to a lesser extent, in hippocampal neurons. Cognitive decline is a common issue in human aging affecting over 50% of the population. This cognitive decline can also be seen in animal models such as the Rhesus monkey. A long-term study undertaken by our lab demonstrated that normal brain aging in rhesus monkeys and other animal models is associated with a significant downregulation of Klotho expression. This observation substantiates data

[Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and cognition: A review].

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of airflow cessation, resulting in brief arousals and intermittent hypoxemia. OSAS is associated with a number of adverse health consequences, and cognitive difficulties. The overall pattern of cognitive impairment in OSAS is complex, and research in this field is mixed. On balance, OSAS have negative effects on cognition, most likely in the domain of attention/vigilance, verbal and visual delayed long-term memory, and executive functions. A still unanswered question is whether th
