The Training Village: an open platform for continuous testing of rodents in cognitive tasks.

The development of new methods for dissecting neural circuits in rodents promises to transform the study of higher-order cognitive functions. However, the adaptation of complex cognitive tasks from humans to rodents remains very limited as these tasks require long periods of animal training with significant researcher expertise and effort. Multi-box setups can mitigate the problem but remain labor-intensive and costly to maintain. Newly developed home cage training systems, while minimizing costs, are limited to specific conditions and tasks. Here, we present the Training Village (TV), an open

Lateralization of the cerebral network of inhibition in children before and after cognitive training.

Inhibitory control (IC) plays a critical role in cognitive and socio-emotional development. IC relies on a lateralized cortico-subcortical brain network including the inferior frontal cortex, anterior parts of insula, anterior cingulate cortex, caudate nucleus and putamen. Brain asymmetries play a critical role for IC efficiency. In parallel to age-related changes, IC can be improved following training. The aim of this study was to (1) assess the lateralization of IC network in children (N = 60, 9-10 y.o.) and (2) examine possible changes in neural asymmetry of this network from anatomical (st

Effects of Training Body-Related Interpretations on Panic-Related Cognitions and Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation biases (IBs) are central in panic disorder, and there is rich evidence showing that these are correlated with and predictive of panic-relevant symptomatology. However, experimental studies are needed to examine the potential causal effects of IBs, as predicted by cognitive models. METHODS: Panic-related IBs were manipulated via a sentence-completion Cognitive Bias Modification-Interpretation (CBM-I) training. The sample included N = 112 healthy participants reporting moderate levels of fear of bodily sensations. Participants were randomly allocated to a positive, ne

Effects of exercise training on brain metabolism and cognitive functioning in sleep apnea.

Impaired glucose metabolism reflects neuronal/synaptic dysfunction and cognitive function decline in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The study investigated the extent to which exercise training (ET) improves cerebral metabolic glucose rate (CMRgl) and cognitive function in patients with OSA. Patients with moderate to severe OSA were randomly assigned to ET (3 times/week, n = 23) or no intervention (control, n = 24). Echocardiography and apolipoprotein ε4 (APOEε4) genotyping were obtained at baseline. Both groups underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing, polysomnography, cognitiv

Principles of Integrated Cognitive Training for Executive Attention: Application to an Instrumental Skill.

One effective cognitive treatment is the rehabilitation of working memory (WM) using an integrated approach that targets the "executive attention" system. Recent neuroscientific literature has revealed that treatment efficacy depends on the presence of various features, such as adaptivity, empathy, customization, avoidance of automatism and stereotypies, and alertness activation. Over the last two decades, an Integrated Cognitive Training (ICT) protocol has been proposed and developed; ICT takes the above-mentioned features and existing literature into account, and has been used to promote the

Investigating the effects of a novel gamified cognitive training on adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a time of increased emotional volatility, with emotion regulation still developing. Training the cognitive substrate of successful emotion regulation has been shown to benefit adolescents' mental health. However, cognitive training interventions often have low adherence rates in this age group. The current study therefore trialled a novel gamified cognitive training program in adolescents. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted throughout 2023 where 144 culturally diverse adolescents (13-16 years, 48% female) completed 12 days of either a novel gamified affecti

Social cognition training improves recognition of individual emotions in schizophrenia disorder.

Impaired recognition of angry, fearful, and emotionless (i.e., neutral) faces is associated with poor social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia disorder (SZ). Limited research evaluates how interventions impact these impairments. Computerized social cognition training can improve overall facial emotion recognition in SZ, but it is unclear whether it improves the aforementioned impairments. We report results from a randomized controlled trial (Trial Registration: NCT02246426) evaluating how computerized social cognition training (SCT) impacts recognition of individual emotions in

The impact of a tDCS and cognitive training intervention on task-based functional connectivity.

Declines in several cognitive domains, most notably processing speed, occur in non-pathological aging. Given the exponential growth of the older adult population, declines in cognition serve as a significant public health issue that must be addressed. Promising studies have shown that cognitive training in older adults, particularly using the useful field of view (UFOV) paradigm, can improve cognition with moderate to large effect sizes. Additionally, meta-analyses have found that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive form of brain stimulation, can improve cognition in

Does Olfactory Training Improve Brain Function and Cognition? A Systematic Review.

Olfactory training (OT), or smell training, consists of repeated exposure to odorants over time with the intended neuroplastic effect of improving or remediating olfactory functioning. Declines in olfaction parallel declines in cognition in various pathological conditions and aging. Research suggests a dynamic neural connection exists between olfaction and cognition. Thus, if OT can improve olfaction, could OT also improve cognition and support brain function? To answer this question, we conducted a systematic review of the literature to determine whether there is evidence that OT translates to
