The impact of changing forest composition in Europe - longest carbon turnover time in unmanaged and broadleaved deciduous forests.

Forests play a crucial role in Europe's strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. Carbon turnover time - the time that carbon spends in the ecosystem - is a fundamental component in determining forest potential to mitigate climate change. However, there is a significant knowledge gap regarding how current and future forest management practices will affect carbon turnover time. This study aims to compare the effects of various forest management strategies on carbon turnover time in European forests. To achieve this, we used the dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS to simulate carbon pools

SoilTemp: A global database of near-surface temperature.

Current analyses and predictions of spatially explicit patterns and processes in ecology most often rely on climate data interpolated from standardized weather stations. This interpolated climate data represents long-term average thermal conditions at coarse spatial resolutions only. Hence, many climate-forcing factors that operate at fine spatiotemporal resolutions are overlooked. This is particularly important in relation to effects of observation height (e.g. vegetation, snow and soil characteristics) and in habitats varying in their exposure to radiation, moisture and wind (e.g. topography

Interacting effects of cold snaps, rain, and agriculture on the fledging success of a declining aerial insectivore.

Climate change predicts the increased frequency, duration, and intensity of inclement weather periods such as unseasonably low temperatures (i.e., cold snaps) and prolonged precipitation. Many migratory species have advanced the phenology of important life history stages and, as a result, are likely to be exposed to these periods of inclement spring weather more often, therefore risking reduced fitness and population growth. For declining avian species, including aerial insectivores, anthropogenic landscape changes such as agricultural intensification are another driver of population declines.

Applying a climate lens framework to the World Health Organization's maternal and perinatal intervention recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change threatens global health, with pregnant individuals and newborns facing some of the gravest consequences. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published nearly 300 maternal and perinatal health recommendations; a structured approach integrating climate change considerations into guideline development has heretofore not been established. METHODS: We developed and applied a six-criteria climate lens framework (climate sensitivity, sustainability, climate-improved alternatives, mitigation, community resilience, and accountability) through an iterative process invol

Meta-analysis of the effects of ambient temperature and relative humidity on the risk of mumps.

Many studies have shown that the relationship between ambient temperature, relative humidity and mumps has been highlighted. However, these studies showed inconsistent results. Therefore, the goal of our study is to conduct a meta-analysis to clarify this relationship and to quantify the size of these effects as well as the potential factors. Systematic literature researches on PubMed, Embase.com, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane library, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were performed up to February 7, 2022 for articles an

Heat Stroke Management Updates: A Description of the Development of a Novel In-Emergency Department Cold-Water Immersion Protocol and Guide for Implementation.

The growing prevalence of heat stroke as a public health issue, exacerbated by climate change and increasing global temperatures, demands an immediate and strategic response to prevent weather-related morbidity and mortality. Heat stroke results from the body's inability to cope with excessive heat, leading to systemic inflammatory responses, cellular apoptosis, and potential multiorgan dysfunction or failure. However, little information explicitly outlines how to perform cold-water immersion in the emergency department (ED), including potential patient selection, how much water or ice to use,

Differences in winter cold hardiness reflect the geographic range disjunction of Neophasia menapia and Neophasia terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Predicting how rapid climate change will affect terrestrial biota depends on a thorough understanding of an organism's biology and evolutionary history. Organisms at their range boundaries are particularly sensitive to climate change. As predominantly terrestrial poikilotherms, insects are often geographically limited by extremes in ambient temperatures. We compared the cold hardiness strategies of two geographically widespread butterflies, the pine white, Neophasia menapia, and the Mexican pine white, N. terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), at the near-contact zone of their range boundaries. Machine learning analysis and risk prediction of weather-sensitive mortality related to cardiovascular disease during summer in Tokyo, Japan.

Climate-sensitive diseases developing from heat or cold stress threaten human health. Therefore, the future health risk induced by climate change and the aging of society need to be assessed. We developed a prediction model for mortality due to cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction, which are weather or climate sensitive, using machine learning (ML) techniques. We evaluated the daily mortality of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and cerebrovascular disease (CEV) in Tokyo and Osaka City, Japan, during summer. The significance of delayed effects of daily maxi

Cold exposure increases aortic dissection risk through extracellular cold inducible RNA binding protein and toll like receptor 4 signaling.

Several observational studies have indicated a greater risk of cardiovascular diseases in cold weather. Cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) is highly conserved and upregulated in response to various cellular stressors. Although CIRP provides protective effects against cold exposure, extracellular CIRP (eCIRP) is a danger-associated molecular pattern that can trigger inflammatory response. We aimed to explore the association between cold temperature and AD development, decipher the mechanistic links between cold stress and vascular cell injury, and provide a new therapeutic approach for c

Current Status and Advancements in Radiotheranostics and Targeted Radionuclide Therapy in Malaysia.

Since the mid-19th century, human activities have increased greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide in the Earth's atmosphere that resulted in increased average temperature. The effects of rising temperature include soil degradation, loss of productivity of agricultural land, desertification, loss of biodiversity, degradation of ecosystems, reduced fresh-water resources, acidification of the oceans, and the disruption and depletion of stratospheric ozone. All these have an impact on human health, causing non-communicable diseases such as injuries during natural disa

Paleolimnology of the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica.

The McMurdo Dry Valleys presently contain more than 20 permanent lakes and ponds, which vary markedly in character. All, with the exception of a hypersaline pond, have a perennial ice-cover. The dry valley lakes, and lakes in other ice-free regions of continental Antarctica, are unique on this planet in that they consistently maintain a thick year-round ice cover (2.8-6.0 m) over liquid water. The persistent ice covers minimize wind-generated currents and reduce light penetration, as well as restricting sediment deposition into a lake and the exchange of atmospheric gases between the water col

Thermal bottlenecks constrain early-life survival of native fish in regulated rivers.

Climate change is reshaping thermal regimes worldwide, threatening species whose early development depends on narrow temperature ranges. Yet directly linking warming to reproductive failure in wild populations remains intractable, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. We developed an empirical framework integrating stable isotope thermometry of archival tissues, landscape-scale temperature modeling, and field surveys to identify when and where successful reproduction occurs. Applying this approach to endangered winter-run Chinook salmon confined below a large dam, we revealed a narrow "critical

Responsiveness to cold snaps by turtle embryos depends on exposure timing and duration.

Characterizing how organisms respond to transient temperatures may further our understanding of their susceptibility to climate change. Past studies in the freshwater turtle, Trachemys scripta, have demonstrated that the timing and duration of heat waves can have major implications for the response of genes involved in gonadal development and the production of female hatchlings. Yet, no study has considered how the response of these genes to transient cold snap exposure may affect gonadal development and the production of males. We investigated how cold snap timing affects gonadal gene express

Warming seas increase cold-stunning events for Kemp's ridley sea turtles in the northwest Atlantic.

Since the 1970s, the magnitude of turtle cold-stun strandings have increased dramatically within the northwestern Atlantic. Here, we examine oceanic, atmospheric, and biological factors that may affect the increasing trend of cold-stunned Kemp's ridleys in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts, United States of America. Using machine learning and Bayesian inference modeling techniques, we demonstrate higher cold-stunning years occur when the Gulf of Maine has warmer sea surface temperatures in late October through early November. Surprisingly, hatchling numbers in Mexico, a proxy for population abundanc

Multi-omics integration revealed the molecular responses and key candidate genes underlying cold tolerance in Elymus nutans.

The perennial grass Elymus nutans, native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, exhibits exceptional cold tolerance. To understand its underlying mechanisms, we integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiling under cold stress. Our results revealed a distinct two-phase response strategy to cold stress. The early phase (0-24 h) featured rapid Ca2+ signaling, redox-related transcriptional reprogramming, and increased membrane permeability. The late phase (36-72 h) shifted toward primary metabolic regulation and the translation of protective proteins. Notably, a prominent time lag (temp

Temporal trends in cross-country inequalities of chronic kidney disease attributable to temperature exposure from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Urbanization and climate change have increased temperature extremes contributing to chronic kidney disease (CKD) risks. Using 1990-2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data, we analyzed trends and disparities in CKD burden attributable to non-optimal temperatures across regions, genders, and time. METHODS: Data on CKD mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were extracted from GBD 2021. Trends were evaluated using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC). Age-period-cohort (APC) modeling quantified age, period, and cohort effects. Age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR
