Superimposing the waves diffracted from two similar hot and cold wires provides the temperature profile around the hot one.

When two similar small objects that are installed in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer are illuminated in such a way that the image of one object in the second beam splitter is located on the other object, the diffracted waves from the objects are exactly superimposed in the interference field. The superimposed diffraction patterns disappear for a phase difference equal to an odd multiple of pi. The phase change induced by imposing changes on the medium surrounding one of the objects can be determined very accurately only by measuring the intensity distribution that appears on the supe

Crocus sativus improves cognitive functions and reduces anxiety-like behavior in aged rats exposed to chronic cold temperature-induced stress.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic cold stress acts as an influential environmental stressor that disrupts neuro-behavioral functions, which include anxiety responses, cognitive performance, mood regulation, and stress susceptibility. In spite of the growing recognition of cold-induced neuropathology, effective therapeutic strategies remain limited. Crocus sativus (saffron) extract, and its principle bioactive constituents (crocin, crocetin, safranal) have emerged as effective neuroprotectants. They elicit potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and have beneficial effects on cognitive function

In Situ Cold-Junction Compensation Strategy for Semiconductor Thin-Film Thermocouples Based on a Pt Thin-Film Resistance Temperature Detector.

Semiconductor thin-film thermocouples offer significant advantages for in situ temperature monitoring in advanced engineering equipment. However, the absence of a reliable cold-junction temperature compensation methodology has constrained their practical deployment. This study proposes an in situ cold-junction compensation strategy based on a Pt thin-film resistance temperature detector (RTD), wherein the Pt thin-film RTD is conformally integrated with an ITO-In2O3 thin-film thermocouple via sputtering and printing processes, enabling precise acquisition of cold-junction temperature without ex

Temperature Safeguards and Peri-Procedural Strategies for Stem Cell Collection in Cold Agglutinin Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cold agglutinins can result in red blood cell (RBC) agglutination and lysis at low temperatures. Temperature sensitivity during stem cell mobilization, processing, and infusion poses unique procedural challenges in patients with active cold agglutinins. A 49-year-old man presented at an outside hospital with severe hemolysis and was found to have an anti-I cold agglutinin and a component of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia, together with a positive COVID and Rhinovirus test. He was treated with RBC transfusions, steroids, and Rituximab. Bone marrow evaluation several months later at our instit

Decreased resistance to bacterial cold-water disease and excessive inflammatory response in ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) reared at high water temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal elevation of water temperature positively affects immune activity and disease resistance in poikilothermic teleost fish. The ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, an important fish species for Japanese freshwater fisheries, is usually produced under higher water temperatures than the natural conditions to facilitate rapid growth. However, it has been reported that rearing fish at higher water temperatures inhibits the development of the thymus, suggesting that resistance to infectious diseases is reduced in ayu reared at higher water temperatures. Here, we show that decreased res

The Cold-Adapted, Temperature-Sensitive SARS-CoV-2 Strain TS11 Is Attenuated in Syrian Hamsters and a Candidate Attenuated Vaccine.

Live attenuated vaccines (LAVs) replicate in the respiratory/oral mucosa, mimic natural infection, and can induce mucosal and systemic immune responses to the full repertoire of SARS-CoV-2 structural/nonstructural proteins. Generally, LAVs produce broader and more durable protection than current COVID-19 vaccines. We generated a temperature-sensitive (TS) SARS-CoV-2 mutant TS11 via cold-adaptation of the WA1 strain in Vero E6 cells. TS11 replicated at >4 Log10-higher titers at 32 °C than at 39 °C. TS11 has multiple mutations, including those in nsp3, a 12-amino acid-deletion spanning the furin

Cold-Adapted Viral Attenuation (CAVA): Highly Temperature Sensitive Polioviruses as Novel Vaccine Strains for a Next Generation Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine.

The poliovirus vaccine field is moving towards novel vaccination strategies. Withdrawal of the Oral Poliovirus Vaccine and implementation of the conventional Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (cIPV) is imminent. Moreover, replacement of the virulent poliovirus strains currently used for cIPV with attenuated strains is preferred. We generated Cold-Adapted Viral Attenuation (CAVA) poliovirus strains by serial passage at low temperature and subsequent genetic engineering, which contain the capsid sequences of cIPV strains combined with a set of mutations identified during cold-adaptation. These viru

[Therapeutic hypothermia after cardiac arrest. A cold intravenous fluid, a cooling helmet and a cooling blanket efficiently reduce body temperature].

Two controlled randomized trials have shown that mild systemic hypothermia after cardiac arrest is beneficial for neurological outcome and one of the studies shows an improved survival rate. A pilot study was performed to evaluate a model of induced hypothermia after cardiac arrest, using cold intravenous fluids and surface cooling with a cold helmet and a coldwater blanket (Thermowrap). The main purpose was to evaluate our cooling method regarding efficacy, safety and usability. Five unconscious patients after cardiac arrest were treated with induced hypothermia of whom three survived with go

Platelet function assays fail to detect differences between transfusion of cold or room temperature platelets in traumatic brain injury patients.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients on antiplatelet medications lack definitive treatment for reversal of platelet inhibition and restoration of injury-induced platelet dysfunction. The use of platelet transfusions in this patient population remains controversial. Cold-stored platelets (CSPs) may be hemostatically superior to their room temperature platelet (RTP) counterparts for hemostatic resuscitation, but their impact on post-transfusion platelet function has yet to be assessed clinically. We aimed to evaluate the effect of CSP or RTP on post-transfusion platelet function in

A Wearable System for Remote Wrist Skin Temperature Monitoring to Assess Skin Thermal Response to Extreme Cold: A Case Study.

Skin temperature measurement is a complex issue. Skin tissue is one of the main thermoregulatory organs and takes major responsibility for heat exchange in the organism. Accurate skin temperature measurement may contribute to better estimation of deep core temperature, which is why enhancing possibilities of skin temperature measurement is considered substantial. However, the real value of the skin temperature can be influenced by many biological and non-biological factors. Some of the external factors such as extensive wind or extreme ambient temperature may significantly influence the raw va

The cold temperature associated with new-onset heart failure after incorporating dynamic status of multimorbidity: nationwide cohort, Taiwan 2012-2019.

AIMS: Cold temperatures are known to affect heart failure (HF) hospitalizations, but the dynamic status of multi-morbidity of HF was rarely incorporated. We investigated the relationship between temperature and new-onset HF by risk strata. METHODS AND RESULTS: This nationwide cohort study analysed daily data on ambient temperature, the dynamic status of risk factors (age, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, myocardial infarction, and atrial fibrillation), and new-onset HF among the Taiwan population from 2012 to 2019.

Epinephrine at 25°C Core Body Temperature and During Rewarming: Case Report of Successful Infant Resuscitation After Cold Water Submersion.

Epinephrine plays a controversial role in accidental hypothermia (<30°C). We report its use in the advanced life support of a 13-month-old white girl with pulseless electrical activity and 25°C core body temperature after 32 minutes of submersion in a fast-running Swiss mountain stream at 8°C. Two doses of epinephrine (10 μg/kg) were given in the field, followed by 12 doses (10 μg/kg) and an infusion of 0.1 μg/kg per minute during rewarming. Spontaneous circulation returned at 29.5°C after 2.5 hours of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Neurologic long-term outcome was excellent. We conclude that

Computational insights into survival durations and prehospital interventions in accidental cold-water immersion: A comprehensive analysis of fresh and saltwater temperatures.

This study examines the complex relationship between scenarios of cold-water immersion, survival durations, and prehospital interventions. It utilizes computational modeling methods to shed light on how different water temperatures affect individuals facing accidental cold-water immersion incidents. The analysis reveals significant variations in survival times based on water temperature. For example, subjects immersed in water at temperatures of 5 °C, 2 °C, and 0 °C had average survival times of 136, 113, and 100 min, respectively, under stable conditions. In flowing water at the same temperat

Assessment of temperatures in the vaccine cold chain in two provinces in Lao People's Democratic Republic: a cross-sectional pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: All childhood vaccines, except the oral polio vaccine, should be kept at 2-8 °C, since the vaccine potency can be damaged by heat or freezing temperature. A temperature monitoring study conducted in 2008-2009 reported challenges in cold chain management from the provincial level downwards. The present cross-sectional pilot study aimed to assess the current status of the cold chain in two provinces (Saravan and Xayabouly) of Lao People's Democratic Republic between March-April 2016. Two types of temperature data loggers recorded the temperatures and the proportions of time exposed to

Regional skin wetness perception and its modulation by warm and cold whole body skin temperatures in people with multiple sclerosis.

Skin wetness sensing is important for thermal stress resilience. Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) present greater vulnerability to thermal stress; yet, it is unclear whether they present wetness-sensing abnormalities. We investigated the effects of MS on wetness sensing and their modulation with changes in mean skin temperature (Tsk). Twelve participants with MS [5 males (M)/7 females (F); 48.3 ± 10.8 yr; Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) range: 1-7] and 11 healthy controls (4 M/7 F; 47.5 ± 11.3 yr) undertook three trials, during which they performed a quantitative sensory test w

Explicit formula of finite difference method to estimate human peripheral tissue temperatures during exposure to severe cold stress.

During cold exposure, peripheral tissues undergo vasoconstriction to minimize heat loss to preserve the maintenance of a normal core temperature. However, vasoconstricted tissues exposed to cold temperatures are susceptible to freezing and frostbite-related tissue damage. Therefore, it is imperative to establish a mathematical model for the estimation of tissue necrosis due to cold stress. To this end, an explicit formula of finite difference method has been used to obtain the solution of Pennes' bio-heat equation with appropriate boundary conditions to estimate the temperature profiles of der

Cold compared with room temperature compress on the repaired primiparous perineum following injury at normal vaginal delivery: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The perineum is typically injured at the first vaginal birth. The application of a cold compress to the perineal repair site can reduce pain; however, the effect usually dissipates after a couple of hours. Repeated applications may be needed for sustained analgesia. However, the medium-term effect of repeated applications of cold compress on the perineal repair site on the recovery of sexual function and perineal healing is not known. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate repeated applications of cold vs room temperature (placebo control) compress to the repaired primiparous per

Accelerating Burden of Hypertensive Heart Disease in Low- and Lower-Middle-SDI Countries, 1990-2023: The Contribution of Cold Temperature Exposure.

Background: Low- and lower-middle-socio-demographic index (SDI) countries face a rapidly growing burden of hypertensive heart disease (HHD). However, the contribution of non-optimal temperature, particularly cold exposure, remains poorly characterised in these populations. Methods: Using Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 data, we analysed HHD deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-standardised rates in 79 low- and lower-middle-SDI countries from 1990 to 2023. Temporal trends were assessed using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), socioeconomic inequality using slope i

A single dose of oral nattokinase accelerates skin temperature recovery after cold water immersion: A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study.

Nattokinase (NK) intake may improve blood flow; however, its effects on skin temperature, which is predominantly controlled by skin surface blood flow, are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a single dose of NK on changes in skin temperature after cold water immersion. A double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover intervention study was performed on nine healthy men. The participants were randomised to receive either a single dose of 2,000 fibrinolytic units (FU) of NK or a placebo with subsequent crossover. Two hours after supplementation, the participants im
