(R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one is a major pheromone component of Anelaphus inflaticollis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

We report the identification and field bioassays of a major component of the male-produced aggregation pheromone of Anelaphus inflaticollis Chemsak, an uncommon desert cerambycine beetle. Male A. inflaticollis produced a sex-specific blend of components that included (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, (S)-2-hydroxyhexan-3-one, 2,3-hexanedione, and (2R,3R)- and (2R,3S)-2,3-hexanediols. Field trials with baited bucket traps determined that the reconstructed synthetic pheromone blend and (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one alone attracted adult A. inflaticollis of both sexes, with significantly more beetles being at

Spatio-temporal analysis of Xyleborus glabratus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae [corrected] Scolytinae) invasion in eastern U.S. forests.

The non-native redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), has recently emerged as a significant pest of southeastern U.S. coastal forests. Specifically, a fungal symbiont (Raffaelea sp.) of X. glabratus has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia) and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) trees in the region; several other Lauraceae species also seem susceptible. Although the range of X. glabratus continues to expand rapidly, little is known about the species' biology and behavior. In turn, there has been no broad-scale assessment of the threat it

Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in buildings: relationship between body height and crevice size allowing entry.

Although the introduced lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coc-cinellidae) is an important predator of aphids in a variety of crop systems during the growing season, it is often a pest in fall and winter when it enters buildings seeking overwintering sites. One of the primary recommendations for managing this annual influx is to prevent beetle entry by caulking or otherwise filling potential entry points in buildings. The goal of this study was to determine how small a gap the beetles are able to enter in choice and no-choice studies by experimentally exploiting their behavior

Imaging and automated detection of Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) pupae in hard red winter wheat.

Computed tomography, an imaging technique commonly used for diagnosing internal human health ailments, uses multiple x-rays and sophisticated software to recreate a cross-sectional representation of a subject. The use of this technique to image hard red winter wheat, Triticum aestivm L., samples infested with pupae of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) was investigated. A software program was developed to rapidly recognize and quantify the infested kernels. Samples were imaged in a 7.6-cm (o.d.) plastic tube containing 0, 50, or 100 infested kernels per kg of wheat. Interkernel spaces were filled with cor

Temporal turnover and fire severity shape postfire beetle (Coleoptera) diversity at a forest range edge.

In recent decades, wildfires have increased in frequency and severity, reshaping forest structure and biodiversity. Yet it remains unclear whether postfire insect assemblages are driven primarily by fire severity, vegetation structure, or broader temporal community turnover, particularly in fragmented range-edge forests. We investigated flight-active beetle (Coleoptera) assemblages 2 years after a 2022 wildfire in the Lost Pines region of Texas, an isolated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) forest at the species' western range margin. Using historical data from 2011, we evaluated temporal turnove

Non-consumptive effects of Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) derived semiochemicals on Myzus persicae (Hemiptera: Aphididae).

Biological control agents are central to Integrated Pest Management, where they suppress herbivorous pests through direct consumption. However, natural enemies can exert non-consumptive effects (NCEs) on prey when predation risk is detected, altering behavior, physiology, or life-history traits in ways that reduce predation risk but impose fitness costs associated with anti-predator defense. Often, NCEs reduce pest pressure on plants via risk-induced changes in herbivore prey feeding, reproduction, and immigration/emigration. Predator-emitted odors are important risk cues, yet predator-derived

Host plant preference and suitability of Systena frontalis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in container ornamental nursery systems.

Systena frontalis (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an economically important pest of container-grown ornamental plants in the eastern United States. Adults cause characteristic shot-hole feeding injury that reduces plant marketability. Although growers report widespread damage across multiple ornamentals, information on adult host plant preference remains inconsistent and largely anecdotal. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine adult feeding preference and host suitability of S. frontalis on 12 major ornamental plant species grown in greenhouses using no-choice and multi-choice

Description of the instar III larva of Agabus (Acatodes) browni Kamiya, 1934 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae, Agabinae).

The instar III larva of Agabus (Acatodes) browni Kamiya, 1934 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Agabinae) is described for the first time with emphasis on chaetotaxy. The larva is characterized by a yellow-brown frontoclypeus with a central anterior diamond-shaped dark brown macula, the serrated inner ventral margin of the distal half of the mandible, and the abdominal segment VIII with both short and three pairs of long hair-like setae. The larva is compared to those of A. conspicuus Sharp, 1873, and A. japonicus Sharp, 1873 from Honshu and western Japan. A key to identify the instar III larvae of the

Novel antimicrobial defensin peptides from different coleopteran insects (Coleoptera: Insecta): identification, characterisation and antimicrobial properties.

Antimicrobial peptides are crucial components of the immune systems of both vertebrates and invertebrates. Here, defensins, the most studied class of antimicrobial molecules in arthropods were investigated in four coleopteran insect species: Harpalus rufipes (DeGeer, 1774), Mylabris quadripunctata (Linnaeus, 1767), Sphaeridium marginatum (Linnaeus, 1758), and Ocypus mus (Brullé, 1832). The peptides synthesized with over 95% purity and their antimicrobial activities were evaluated by MIC test method. As a result, it was determined that Mylabris quadripunctata defensin (MqDef) showed high antimi

World genera of Mastigitae: review of morphological structures and new ecological data (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae).

Mastigitae comprise most unusual ant-like stone beetles, showing intriguing morphological characters and ecological adaptations. The largest adults among Scydmaeninae can be found in this group; some reaching nearly 9 mm in length, but there are also adults as small as 1.10 mm. Members of Leptomastacini are microphthalmous and depigmented; Mastigini are often black or contrastingly bicolored and have diurnal life style, adults of some species climbing bushes and trees. Papusini inhabit the driest North American deserts and are active during the warmest time of the year; other taxa live in subt

Assessing Flight Potential of the Invasive Asian Longhorned Beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) With Computerized Flight Mills.

The Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lamiinae), is an invasive woodborer that poses a serious threat to urban and natural landscapes. In North America, this beetle is a quarantine pest, and populations are subject to eradication efforts that consist of the identification, removal, and destruction of infested host material, and removal or prophylactic treatment of high-risk host plant species. To enhance Asian longhorned beetle eradication protocols in landscapes with extensive host availability, we assessed the dispersal potential of ma

Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Larval Feeding on Pisum sativum L. Affects Soil and Plant Nitrogen.

Adults of Sitona lineatus (pea leaf weevil, PLW) feed on foliage of several Fabaceae species but larvae prefer to feed on nodules of Pisum sativum L. and Vicia faba L. Indirectly, through their feeding on rhizobia, weevils can reduce soil and plant available nitrogen (N). However, initial soil N can reduce nodulation and damage by the weevil and reduce control requirements. Understanding these interactions is necessary to make integrated pest management recommendations for PLW. We conducted a greenhouse study to quantify nodulation, soil and plant N content, and nodule damage by weevil larvae

Evaluation of Reference Genes for RT-qPCR in Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Under UVB Stress.

Reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) has become a widely used technique to quantify gene expression. It is necessary to select appropriate reference genes for normalization. In the present study, we assessed the expression stability of seven candidate genes in Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) irradiated by ultraviolet B (UVB) at different developmental stages for various irradiation time periods. The algorithms of geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper were applied to determine the stability of these candidate genes. Ribosomal protein genes

Two new species of Chrysomelobia Regenfuss, 1968 (Acariformes: Podapolipidae) from Paropsis charybdis Stål (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Two new species of Chrysomelobia Regenfuss, 1968, C. alleni n. sp. and C. intrusus n. sp., are described from Tasmanian specimens of the eucalyptus leaf beetle Paropsis charybdis Stål. This beetle is now known to host three species of Chrysomelobia, the other being Chrysomelobia pagurus Seeman, 2008, which is recorded from Tasmania for the first time. Thus, the three species of Paropsis Olivier known to have podapolipid mites each have three mite species from three separate lineages of Chrysomelobia. Temperature extremes, density dependence, and southern pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) population dynamics in east Texas.

Previous studies of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., established that its population in east Texas responds to a delayed density-dependent process, whereas no clear role of climate has been determined. We tested two biological hypotheses for the influence of extreme temperatures on annual southern pine beetle population growth in the context of four alternative hypotheses for density-dependent population regulation. The significance of climate variables and their interaction with population regulation depended on the model of density dependence. The best model included b

Ecotoxicity evaluation of thymol in tunneller dung beetles (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae) as a natural alternative to ecotoxic anthelmintics.

Synthetic anthelmintics widely used in livestock production are largely excreted unchanged in faeces, where they can exert sublethal and lethal effects on non-target organisms such as dung beetles. Phytochemical compounds, including thymol (THY), have been proposed as environmentally compatible alternatives; however, information on their ecotoxicological safety across different dung beetle taxa remains limited. We assessed the sublethal effects of dietary thymol on Thorectes lusitanicus (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae), a flightless tunneller dung beetle considered functionally sensitive to veterinar

Deorphanization of the odorant receptor CsepOR1 identifies a biphasic behavioral modulator in Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae).

BACKGROUND: The seven-spot ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata, is a key predatory natural enemy widely deployed for biological control of agricultural pests. Olfaction is crucial for prey location and searching, yet the molecular mechanisms of chemoreception in this species remain largely unknown. RESULTS: Antennal transcriptome analysis identified a repertoire of 24 odorant receptors (ORs), of which CsepOR1 exhibited the highest expression level in the antennae. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis confirmed that CsepOR1 is predominantly expressed in femal
